In the article “What is Cultural Appropriation and Why is it Wrong? By Nadra Kareem Nittle and article “The Difference between Cultural Exchange and Cultural Appropriation” by Jarune Uwujaren. It talks about how cultural appropriation and about people wearing and using other cultural things such as the style of the clothes. It is usually known as borrowing but now it is not just borrowing since people who wear things/ objects with meaning and significance from other cultures do not even know the meaning. Uwujaren talks about how there are many people who see everything as cultural appropriation since the difference between them is not much. One important thing that Uwujaren points out in the article is that there is a thin line between cultural appropriation and exchange, the main important thing is respect. Many people do not know the difference due to the big number of people who think everything is cultural appropriation. However, when a person who is interested in being part of another culture is allowed to be part of the culture by being invited only otherwise if the person tries to be part of the culture without being invited is seen as disrespectful. As Uwujaren clearly stated in her article “engaging with a culture as a respectful and humble guest, invitation only.” Another example of cultural exchange is when Americans celebrate Cinco de Mayo when it is a Mexican celebration but it is only a holiday in America. The reason we celebrate this holiday is because, “Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army 's unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla”( Lee, Special for USA TODAY, Jolie. It is a form of, showing others part of their cultures for example they celebrate with Mexican food like tacos, tamales, tostadas etc. Also they wear Mexican clothing, mustaches, drink hard liquor and watch the popular Mexican dance called folklorico. The Effects of African American Culture Appropriations on the Minority Black Culture The black culture is the minority culture in this instance and in most cases, it is dominated by the white culture which has imposed its ideas on them (Stuckey, 2013). When two different cultures come together, different types of cultural appropriations occur. These include transculturation, cultural dominance, and cultural exploitation. The appropriation between the white and black cultures, resulting in the African American culture, is defined by cultural dominance and exploitation.
Rogers from defines cultural appropriation “as the use of a culture’s symbols, artifacts, genres, rituals, or technologies by members of another culture” then it divides cultural appropriation into four different categories which is cultural exchange, cultural dominance, cultural exploitation, and cultural transculturation. Each year there are many people from around the world that want to migrate into the United States making it their permanent home. Culture shapes and designs the world we live in and our place in it. Individuals and societies examine their surroundings through constant interpretations of what they do on a daily basis. Everyone who lives in any part of what we call “society,” are constantly trying to belong to that are they live in. The term “culture” is depicted in a new context, and includes everything from activities and buildings to language and practices of human beings. Growing up in an American society, we are surrounded by certain customs and mannerisms. We pay little attention to them, as they have been ingrained into our society and is apart of our everyday lives.
