Mental health in the fire service is an upcoming problem, but has been occurring for years without firefighters even knowing it. Specifically post-traumatic stress disorder known as PTSD and firefighter suicides are the main issues that have a large impact in the fire service. This outline will lay out the main points that are a result, impact, or other subjects in relation to the two main issues above. Firefighter deaths are rising rapidly, members of the fire service need to be educated on PTSD and suicide to provide treatment before another devastating event occurs in result of the issues effects.
The ABC Model of Crisis Intervention (Kanel, 2010) and the Seven Task of Assessment (James, 2013) process are examples of two models that are used to conduct client evaluations during a crisis. Both models offer effective support techniques that, in turn, assist clients identify and cope with their crisis situations. Also, both models require participation and cooperation from the client in order to successfully carry out the process in its’ entirety.
Police departments would have to hire certain outside professionals such as psychiatrists to train the police officers on how to handle mental health situations or how to recognize the time. Some police departments only train a few specialized members to go on calls with mental health situations to help, but they cannot go on all of the calls. The funds for mental health are not being used correctly. Most funds are going towards mental health institutes or therapies and treatments. Little is going to the police departments.

Many people seek therapy for a variety of reasons. Comer (2014) states “that people who seek therapy compared to those who don’t experience greater improvement than seventy five percent of people who don’t get treatment” (pg. 91). This statistic shows there a clear correlation between therapy and problem resolution. What’s the difference between a professional helping relationship that is established in therapy and a having a friend who you have social relationship with hear your problem, aren’t they essentially the same thing? I’ll discuss how a professional helping relationship differs in structure and content from a social friendship and its value in problem resolution.
The chronic use and abuse of the 911 and emergency medical response system usually encompasses individuals who have social and health disadvantages. “Frequent users typically suffer from combinations of chronic medical diseases, psychiatric disorders, drug and alcohol dependence, in-home difficulties and homelessness” (Jenson, 2013) Theses individuals need specialized social work care and referrals. Prior to the soft ware and surveillance program identifying some of the frequent abuses in large emergency medical response systems was difficult, if not impossible. Reviewing countless medical charts and recognizing these individuals took a great amount time of the social workers.
I have gained great insight into the roles of services that help people going through a crisis. I work as part of primary working team and my role is to help the primary worker and the associate worker in coming up with a treatment plan for our allocated patient. I regularly attend multi-disciplinary care review meetings where we decide and carry out present care needs, plans, and wishes and identify future input and support, goals and any desired future outcomes for our service users. I work with the other members of staff and outside agencies to promote empowerment, individuality, rights as enshrined by the law, personal responsibilities, self-identity and self-esteem. I work as part of a team including an occupational therapist that puts care plans and assessments into action to help people with basic life skills.
To illustrate, management in the fire service have an excessive amount of responsibility. They must be prepared in handling problems that their personnel can encounter, one of which being post traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. Management must be educated in the symptoms of PTSD, and possible treatments to suggest to their employees. PTSD becomes a difficult topic for management personnel because they must be trained, and have the knowledge of signs that identify PTSD. However, management may have a hard time identifying this diagnosis in firefighters/ emergency medical personnel if the management personnel is unaware on how they normally function. If the the PTSD symptoms go unidentified this can cause a problem for management, and issues could potentially fall in the category of
