I have been living for decades, went through many years of evolution of the world. I guard the school hall, what is now located in Moscrop Secondary. Some believe that I am a ghost since some did see me at night. Despite the ghost stories about me, I am really only a spirit which saw many changes through the past to present. I know everything in the school whether it’s the newest technology, education, fashion, gossips or trends.

People passing by me down the hall were all in their uniforms. The ladies wore long skirts with petticoats and blouses, while the guys wore suits with ties, dark socks and dress shoes. During class time, it was silent in the hall. Occasionally, there would be students walking down the hall to use the bathroom or go to the principal’s office. There were also moments when I heard children screaming or teachers yelling at their students. As soon as the hand bell is swung signalling the first bell, students would march in twos behind their teacher into their classroom. Later the janitor will walk down the hallway ringing a small bell for classes to start. Unlucky students who were late were punished, a grave catastrophe. Then after came the announcement from several speakers located outside. In the early morning, two boys from each class would be assigned to fill a bucket of water. The majority of them would race to see who will get to the well first, which was located miles away from the school. When I walk down the hall, there were some classroom doors that were open. Through many changes of mankind, now is the generation where technology exists that were impossible decades ago. The hallway I now walk down everyday is always bright, lined with lockers and door finishing off with the nicely polished floor as a grand entrance. There are colourful posters posted on the wall of different events happening in the school. During the morning before the first bell, students will be around in the hallways and the multi-purpose room, hanging out with friends. Others will go early to their next class to prepare. Most of them have their phone out taking photos, listening to music or posting on social media. During break time, the hallway is packed and can be hard to walk around. Students will go to their lockers, the sound of metal can be heard from far away. As I walk down the stairs, I can taste the food coming from the cafeteria that will to be served. Pop, rap or kpop music can be often heard during lunch from the speakers. The students wore different coloured clothes: pants, shorts hoodies, skirts or whatever they prefer. Teachers will walk down the hall and wave to students. Laughter can be heard everywhere in the hall. When I peek into the classroom, the desks are neat and arranged. The classroom is filled with different books and education-related posters. Students all carry their own textbooks and go to the class with their own grade. I bolted through the clear door of a small, earth-colored high school, practically slamming the door behind me. Catching my breath, I stood in the school completely drenched and shivering. Rain pounded on the clear door behind me. I stood awkwardly on a mat in front of the doorway, trying not to get the floor wet. I gazed around the hall in front of me. I couldn’t see staff in the office, nor were any students in the hallway or in the classrooms. The entire school was empty.
To begin, my observation was at Webster Elementary School, a school placed in the city surrounded by houses and other schools. The specific classroom I am observing is full of Kindergarten students who seem to very advanced than I had imagined. The classroom walls are brick and white, but the classroom teacher Mrs. O'Brien does an amazing job keeping the space use for both an upbeat and educational vibe, especially for environmental print. Everywhere you look there are educational posters, numbers, and mental state vocabulary words, as well as, students completed work. Everything about the room was bright, colorful, and child-size. It was an ideal learning environment in my opinion. I have noticed that the higher the education, the more dull the interior of the classroom becomes. I think this is because at a very young age children are encouraged to learn and teachers want them to have a desire to explore and learn and this is often accomplished through entertainment. As a college student, it is clear that learning is a choice and professors are not there to entertain, but to teach. I think this shift in education style is good for creating independence, focus, and motivation in students, but I personally feel stifled by plain, uniform classrooms. I’m sitting in class, its 11:25, and two more minutes until my favorite part of the day. The bell rings, the class rushes out, I briefly think about the poor souls that have second lunch and must wait another hour until they eat, however that thought passes quickly because I’m at my lunch table with all of my friends pulling out my sack lunch. While many of my lunch buddies wait in line to get school lunch, usually some nachos, a burger, or pizza, some of us also pull out a sandwich and snacks from home and start chowing down trying to make the most of our half hour off from learning. We often times catch up about high school drama, play games on our phones, and interact with all the other students at lunch, occasionally not to our pleasing. But most lunches we have fun and we leave feeling full and ready for our next class.
Each year, as a new group of students enter my classroom, I will encourage them to be expressive of their imaginations in their favorite subjects, whether it will be art, literature, math or music. We all have rules and regulations to follow, and each student will know that there is no exception in the school or the classroom. Another goal in my classroom will be to keep the students excited about learning, not to treat school as a game or a social event, but to encourage a unique and fun atmosphere to learn.
Pedestrian and Walkability: The University of Calgary makes it convenient for the pedestrians to access through different areas of the campus by providing both indoor and outdoor ways. The Campus is connected internally and it is easier for people who get from a certain place to another place if they do not want to go outside during the cold harsh weather through indoors. If people are taking the C-train, it is convenient for them as the Biological Sciences building is about three minutes of walking distance from the University C-train station. The Campus also has the “Plus-15” system which connects different areas of the campus through an “indoor sky bridges fifteen feet above ground”.

...there is the matter of leaving the cafeteria. Generally the entire table will leave as one group. Most of the group will probably finish eating at almost the same time. Those who finish first wait for the others out of politeness and courtesy. After everyone is through eating, someone will suggest that we leave and we will all take our trays up to the dishwashing counter and then leave. Near the tray drop-off counter, we are hit with hot, sticky air from the dishwashing. We quickly leave our trays and continue out of the cafeteria as a group. On our way out we talk to each other and friends that we see sitting at other tables. Often, students will plan out what they will do later in the day while talking to friends and finding out what is going on. Eventually, the group will split up and goodbyes are said. We go back to our rooms with a full stomach and a full mind.

Today is an era of information explosion. In the past few years, many newly invented technological devices and software are now tightly integrated with our everyday lives. Today, people can look up almost any kind of information, make friends, communicate with others, and express ourselves with the simple touch of a button on a device we usually keep within arm’s reach. “Widespread use of technology is changing the way we work, learn, and communicate – even the way we carry out our regular, daily activities.”(Seifer and Mihalynuk) These devices not only benefit our livelihoods and increase our happiness, but they are also integral in advancing education, technology, development, and, in general, human evolution. The children of today, who have been raised in this era of information explosion, will undoubtedly reap such benefits and, in turn, advance society towards a better generation.
