I decided to do my ethnographic observation at Enterprise Elementary School. I went to the preschool on both Monday and Tuesday of SUU’s fall break. They have three preschool classes throughout the day that last about an hour and a half each. The classes each consist of around fifteen young students. Their ages range from as young as four up to six. There was a generally equal split between boys and girls, yet there were a few more boys overall. The children came from a variety of backgrounds. Some were Mexican or African-American and a few spoke two languages and one even spoke three. They often confused words and would mix the languages, yet these students seemed to pick up new concepts faster than some of the others.
Preschool was a great place to go as a college student and to see the vast difference in education from the beginning compared to now. Everything about the room was bright, colorful, and child-size. It was an ideal learning environment in my opinion. I have noticed that the higher the education, the more dull the interior of the classroom becomes. I think this is because at a very young age children are encouraged to learn and teachers want them to have a desire to explore and learn and this is often accomplished through entertainment. As a college student, it is clear that learning is a choice and professors are not there to entertain, but to teach. I think this shift in education style is good for creating independence, focus, and motivation in students, but I personally feel stifled by plain, uniform classrooms. This essay is an ethnographic study of Whole Foods Market which is located in Kensington, London. Whole Foods Market is a niche supermarket that sells high quality organic and natural products at high prices. In this essay, I will provide a brief orientation of ethics with regards to the concepts of Corporate Social Responsibility - macroethics and Business Ethics - microethics and the theoretical frameworks of consequentialism, deontology and virtue ethics. To protect the anonymity of the children I have observed I have labeled the children according to their classroom and sex. In the following ethnography I refer to the Hungry Caterpillars, the Busy Bees, and the Terrific Tigers. The school is broken down into three classrooms according to the child’s age and skills. The two year-olds are the Hungry Caterpillars (HC), the three year-olds are the Busy Bees (BB), and the four year-olds are the Terrific Tigers (TT). Participant observation is a method of collecting information and data about a culture and is carried out by the researcher immersing themselves in the culture they observing. The researcher becomes known in the community, getting to know and understand the culture in a more intimate and detailed way than would be possible from any other approach. This is done by observing and participating in the community’s daily activities. The method is so effective because the researcher is able to directly approach the people in the community in a natural context as opposed to taking the participant out of their environment. The aim of participant observation is to gain an understanding the subject’s life from their perspective, with the purpose of collecting more detailed information about a community’s habits, opinions, relationships and issues.
For the location of my naturalistic observational study I chose a public park with a splash pad which I frequently visit with my daughter. Since this site is quite popular with locals at any given time of the day there are at least over a dozen people present. As the park is designed for the entertainment of children the age group of the people varies. There are young children accompanied by their parents and grandparents as well as teenagers in groups. Therefore the above discussed park proved to be the greatest preference for me to observe the behavior of people in a natural setting.
Preschool isn't just a place for parents to drop off their children while they are at work for the day. It is in preschool where children learn the necessary skills needed to succeed in school and in life. With high-quality preschools and qualified teachers the possibilities are endless. It's not only the children who reap the benefits of Early Childhood Education; their parents, fellow peers, and even society feel the positive effects of quality preschool programs. Children enrolled in quality preschool programs are more likely to succeed academically and socially when they are older.
Every day, whether it is through our families, classes, churches, regional location, workplace, or the media we obtain unique views on how we feel the world should work in politics. Personally, during my lifetime these factors of political socialization, or the process of becoming politically aware, have led me to become a very liberal person for the majority of political issues. Babies don’t stay babies forever. Eventually, they turn four and parents have to make the difficult decision of putting them in preschool or keeping them to themselves for an extra year. This decision could be life changing for a child, however, it could also be too much for a four year old. The history of preschool becoming an everyday thing for any child has greatly evolved over the years. Preschool gives young children a head start on school so when they attend kindergarten they already have an understand of some school related things. The price of sending a child to preschool is also a factor a lot of parents look at before sending their kids. These are all reasons that parents either decide it is good for their child to attend preschool or to keep them at home for another year.
Language plays an important part in our lives, for children this is a critical time for them to learn how they can use language to communicate effectively from the moment they learn through school and into adulthood. While a child goes through school they are exposed to Standard English, but there are diversities that appear in the classroom, for example culture plays a part in language development. Gee and Hayes (2011) stated that there are many things that language can be including; a set of rules, a cognitive experience, a social tool or an object, but overall language is something that changes based on culture and social context. Acknowledging and accepting diversity in the classroom in relation to language and language learning is important to ensure children can communicate effectively with others.
On November 17th, 2016 from the hours of 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, I had the opportunity to take part in a ride along with the Marietta police department. I chose to do a ride along because I believed it was the most interesting choice, and the choice that would require the most of me to step out of my comfort zone. As someone in the internet generation, I believe we are given a lot of false information and representation of police officers. Language has pioneered many interracial relationships and historical milestones. Language is a necessity for basic communication and cultural diversity. Being multilingual is a skill proven influential to a successful future. Due to rapid globalization, countries all over the world are stressing the importance of learning a second, or even third, language. With the exception of time and lack of resources, adults have very few widely applicable disadvantages to learning multiple languages. However, language learning as a child presents more complications. Some of those include not having enough funding at the elementary school level to introduce a program for secondary language, academic overload for the youth, stress for both the parent and student parties, and the mixing of languages. Not all of these complications are true in any or all situations, however, and the absence of them provides multitudes of opportunity for future career and academic success. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the parents or the education legislation to decide whether they encourage the learning of a secondary language at the young age necessary for retention. “The general consensus is that it takes between five to seven years for an individual to achieve advanced fluency,” therefore the younger a child begins to learn, the more likely they are to benefit to the maximum potential (Robertson). Keeping the language learning in high school or beginning the process earlier is a greatly controversial discussion that is important to address because of the topic’s already lengthy suspension.
