Summer Family Dinner It was midsummer, humid, and the sultry evening sun was beaming bright on the west side of the house. As a result of sporadic thunderstorms in the month of July, the tall fescue grass had grown another foot since the last mow and the beaming sun on this side of the house made the yard appear larger. It resembles a grass farm with that deep, sea green color extending into the sky and touching the clouds. Our home was located on a corner lot and we had an acre of land to mow. Clearly, too hot and sticky in Atlanta to be concerned with household chores and yard duties, but these chores must be completed today. My family went to work with me starting in the kitchen searching the refrigerator for dinner ideas and my husband and son …show more content…
The men (my husband and son) were actively tackling the yard chores by mowing, trimming, and blowing grass and shrubs. Upon opening the back door to the deck to start the grill, the mixed aroma of gasoline fumes from the mower and gas trimmer, with that fresh cut grass smell opened my nostrils, but only temporary. Over the years, I had honed my technique of grill prep and had it down to a science. The grill was started by stacking charcoal briquettes in a tepee with at least 5 to 7 rolls, with a splash of lighter fluid, my fire ignited and, hopefully, in 10 minutes or so my grill would be ready for cooking. As the briquettes burned down to a gray goose color, I headed back into the kitchen to prepare the corn and medley mix. Corn on the cobs were wrapped in foil with butter and seasoning salt, then added to the grill along with the protein selection for this evening of beef, T-bone steaks. The T-bones steaks were seasoned with honey-mesquite rubbed and placed on the grill. The frozen medley mix was seasoned with lemon juice wrapped and pierced in foil, then, added to the grill along side the other
...offee mingling with that of the simmering chicken gave the dish an extra panache. I have tried substituting fireplace smoke with some success, but have been unable to duplicate the smell of the boiling coffee using that method. A wood cookstove or parlor stove topped with an old- fashioned percolator is preferable if one can be obtained. The meal should be eaten in the kitchen where it was prepared and served on a table large enough for everyone to gather around. Conversation, laughter and reminiscing should be encouraged throughout the meal, and please, no television.
I chose Akbar the Mughal Emperor, Procopius, and Thomas Aquinas as my three to attend a dinner party. I knew I wanted to write about knowledge. Originally, I wanted to include the Queen of Sheba as a member of the dinner party, but I questioned whether I would be able to include enough about this character. My first choice was Thomas Aquinas, because he focused on reason as a way to acquire knowledge. This means that knowledge is internal for him. One section in the Summa Theologica is the “Gift of Knowledge”. I also wanted to play with Aquinas’ writing style. I chose Akbar because he invited so many diverse scholars to speak about a wide array of topics. I use his character to discuss the ways we use knowledge. My final choice was Procopius. I chose Procopius instead of the Queen of Sheba, so I could bring up how we present our knowledge and how our knowledge evolves. Procopius wrote The Secret History and the History of the Wars. These works have alternate views of Justinian, that evolved with events during that time period. My goal is to find a conclusion from these about the value of knowledge, how knowledge is used, and how knowledge is presented.
Mere words can't describe how happy I was to cook. Tea cakes, sweet potato pie, honey glazed pound cake, Roasted turkey and leafy greens. I get to Make them all. Of course since I'm a spoiled brat I had to get my hair ready with my apron. Then and only then will I be able to cook. We were in the kitchen all day. You could just. Smell the richness of the turkey. I could almost taste the silky cream sweet potato pie. It would make your mouth water . Halfway through cooking Most of our family was already here (They were going to sleep the night) They pitched in to help, without them we would’ve been cooking through Thanksgiving.
However, there is a quick and easy solution to this problem. Normally, if the coals were to die, the griller would have to take off the grates with the meat on them, reheat and/or add new coals, and restart the grilling process. With this invention, a University of Southern Florida patent, an extension can be added to a charcoal grill that allows you to add charcoal to the grill without opening it, taking the meat off, and interfering with the grilling
It’s early Saturday morning, and my father is rustling about the kitchen and in the backyard. A huge hunk of meat sits on the kitchen counter, and wood chips have begun to smoke outside in a barbecue. A “secret” concoction of spices is slathered over the meat, and a mix of apple juice and other liquids are injected into the muscle. Once the outdoor smoker has reached its intended temperature, the huge piece of meat is placed on the grid for the long, slow cooking process. Depending upon the meat, the cooking process takes upwards of 8 hours to properly cook the meat, yielding a juicy, tendered cooked dish. Barbecue, the art of slow cooking meat over low heat and smoke, was almost a weekly weekend ritual at my house
Despite the tasty results that come out, charcoal grills often get a bad rap due to their frustrating nature. Briquets must be placed properly before being set alight - they also need time to fully combust. While gas grills can run uninterrupted for long periods of time, charcoal needs to be replaced every hour or so. All of the time and effort that goes into using charcoal grills is often too much for busy families trying to enjoy a quick outdoor
A parental figure has the ability to create a significant impact on the way their child will act in certain situations and where their child will end up in life. A parent's responsibility is to be a positive example and make sure the child has everything needed to live a healthy life. In The Dinner by Herman Koch, Paul does not necessarily make the most responsible choices for the betterment of himself as a father and his son Michel. Paul has showed his level of responsibility by allowing his son to witness him do violent things, visibly using various coping mechanisms to deal with certain situation, and his choosing to have a child with Claire despite her sociopathic tendencies.
“The Dinner Party” by Mona Gardner talks about how a cobra, hidden underneath an occupied dinner table, frightens a guest after seeing the hostess’ servant place bait outside. This guest showed everyone a game of silence, so they wouldn’t frighten the snake. After the cobra leaves, the other people were praising and pointing out that men have good nerve control. The guest questioned the hostess as to how she knew the snake was there and she replied, “It was crawling across my foot.” This story is about how men and women have equal nerve control, rather than what some people say.
This warm, toasty burger comes with two juicy, hand-seasoned, all-beef patties topped with seasoned grilled onions, creamy cheddar cheese sauce, mayonnaise and your choice of American or pepperjack cheese, all served on bakery fresh toasted sourdough bread.
My dad and sister watched television, my mom crocheted, and I worked on my Kinderbuch for German class. As usual, everyone but me fell asleep. At 10:30, we packed all of our things into the back of the Tahoe and pulled around to he front to return the keys.
I enter an exquisite room welcomed by a benevolent host. I glance around and see dining tables strategically set as if the queen were to be expected. White flowers with silver sparkles adorn the tables to add a final touch. The lights are dimmed low and classical music plays in the background to create a placid atmosphere. A savory aroma fills the room making me crave the chef’s fine platter. The host leads my party to a table and offers us drinks. As we wait for dinner to begin, murmurs fill the room with general conversation.

My favorite meal is the chicken fettuccini pasta. I chose this dish because I can never stop eating it. The meal is made up of warm tenderized chunks of chicken, delicate smooth creamy white sauce, and many varieties of sliced up vegetables. However, when I was a child vegetables has always been difficult to eat. It prevented me from enjoying my favorite meal because I would always have to take out the mixed vegetables in the meal. As a child I 've tried avoiding vegetables, but was found throughout the school cafeteria 's food, my mother 's cooking, or many fancy restaurants. There was nowhere to run. Over the years, my mother knew I was struggling to eat vegetables. She worked very hard by coming up with her own recipes in order for me to eat healthy. From mixing in the vegetables into the meals I usually eat or to trick me into eating meat but was actually vegetables. Soon later I came to realize how much effort she has put into the meals. All those hour and hard work my mother put it allowed me to enjoy my favorite meal again.
We all, probably, have a story involving a drunk family member at a party or family reunion. Let’s just say my family has plenty. My uncle on my dad’s side of the family loves his tequila and brings his own bottle(s) to any family gathering. The particular family gathering you are about to hear about happened when I was about five years old. I can remember bits and pieces of the event in question but, the main part of the story happened past my bedtime.
"The great gift of family life is to be intimately acquainted with people you might never even introduce yourself to, had life not done it for you." -Kendall Hailey. Many people among us think that a family reunion is boring. It is an unpleasant social affair where our parents drive us to go and stay there for a considerable length of time. There are odd individuals who come to us and kiss or embrace us while we are still considering "do I know him/her?”. It is because we believe that enjoying the holiday out with friends is much better than investing hours with the people, we “unfortunately” belong to. They have no other subject for discussion aside from our studies and grades. On the other hand, family gathering is always a new experience for someone who lives far away from his blood relations.
