At Capella University the Master’s program fieldwork obligations for School Counseling are pertaining to the CACREP standards which consist of 600 hours of internship and 100 hours of practicum. The beginning student phase is definitely true to its name. The center prides itself in offering students with a plethora of services to help them through any situation that they are going through, but the counseling center is not a long-term facility for students to utilize. Several mental health disorders that are commonly seen in college age students require more than a monthly appointment with a psychologist; they could require up to a weekly or biweekly appointment, requirements that the counseling center simply could not fulfill. When students with such mental health problems come to the center, the should be referred to a long-term psychiatrist instead of leading the student to believe that they can continue to go to the counseling center for an indefinite amount of time. Next, the center needs to alter the way they deal with first time patients. While an initial risk assessment is vital to protect not only the student but also other people who the student may encounter, students should be able to meet with a psychologist on their first visit. Many of the students’ problems could be dealt with during one appointment, but instead students are required to book an appointment a month away when more than likely the issue they are dealing with will be resolved. This tactic, while may be more time consuming in the moment, will eventually pay off in the amount of appointments that they counseling center receives.
As I reflect on the decision I made to apply for my Master’s degree within the school counseling field, I began to become more grateful. School counseling wasn’t nearly the major I chose upon entering college for my undergraduate level. I wanted to be a pediatrician. As a senior in high school, I would ponder often about my potential career goals. I wanted to work with children, but I loved Science. My love for Science was undeniable. Majoring in Biological Sciences, and then entering medical school was my goal. A pediatrician seemed like the likely career path to choose, being that I loved children and science. However, my decision began to waver as I continued within my degree. I went from a Biology major to a Teaching of English major.
Professional competence can mean various things to different people. Competency in any career or profession has many basic requirements that are learned in a classroom environment as well as many essential elements that must be learned through formal, on-the-job training in order to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to function adequately as a professional in a workplace setting. Competency in the counseling field is not a ‘once learned, always known’ type of knowledge; it requires a combination of classroom education, internship training to acquire confidence, knowledge, skills, and experience, and an obligation of continuing education on a life-long basis.
An effective counselor is not only well-educated, knowledgeable, and well-trained, but also possesses the skills and attitudes that will help him or her to perform work duties well, get along with colleagues, and fit into the company’s (agency’s) culture.
Counselors are able to advise more students through planned activities (Ordsmyth, 2002). There is also the need to support students through the transitional stage between significant events. Preparing a student to enter a four-year college, two-year college, military or job force is crucial to their future success.
Educators need to be properly educated since they are teaching the next wave of counseling students. Students need a proper foundation in order to succeed in the counseling career and it starts with the educators. Training programs can use the CCSR as a comprehensive assessment tool aimed at evaluating trainees’ ability to execute counseling skills, phases of a counseling session and sessions within a counseling relationship (Flynn & Hay, 2015). There was no literature to suggest that counseling students were conducting effective counseling sessions in their internship. The numbers were staggering low as the students could not perform the basic counseling skills or proper counseling techniques. In cases like this, the CCSR would definitely be beneficial in providing a consistent assessment to counseling
