Counseling Psychology When I began my studies at the University of Northern Iowa, I had an interest in the field of psychology, but I was not yet sure that I wanted to pursue a career in that area. The classes that I consequently took and the professors that taught them solidified my desire to receive a degree in psychology. Interacting with my professors as a teacher's assistant and research assistant gave me a chance to discover at a more personal level what psychology is all about. Although I am seeking a M.A. in General Psychology at this time, I do have specific goals for my future. I hope to continue my education past the M.A. and receive a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, counseling individuals and eventually acquiring a teaching position with a college or university. I am currently doing research in the area of Cognitive Psychology with Dr. Jack Yates, Professor of Cognitive Psychology, University of Northern Iowa. This research is related to how people conceptualize concrete and abstract terms, but my research interests vary widely. Other research interests include gender differences in the workplace and how socialization affects stereotypic gender roles among the sexes. I have qualified for the dean's list three of the last four semesters, currently carry a 3.59 junior/senior GPA and a 3.75 GPA in my major. I also have been accepted into Psi Chi and belong to the Psychology Club on campus. I expect that graduate work at the University of Somewhere will be demanding, challenging, and exciting, and I look forward to attending a program of this sort. During my time in graduate school I expect to receive the opportunity to learn, grow, and evolve as a person and a psychologist.
In the novel, Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth and Jane both achieve lasting happiness with their respective partners -- Darcy and Bingley, after a series of misjudgments, misunderstandings and obstacles. My first semester in college, I took a Psychology 101 course and immediately knew I wanted to work in this field. I was drawn into different theories and how individual’s minds work. I always believed I was born to help others and guide them to success in life. I desire to help others because of my own personal struggles with mental illness. My unique perspective on mental illness allows me to empathize on a different level with individuals. I desire to give back and support to the community the way it was there for me during my dark times. I was lucky to have known from the start that psychology was my interest. My paper is based on an article from the text’s web site (chapter 9) entitled “Lack of sleep ages body’s systems.” The basic claim of the article is that sleep deprivation has various harmful effects on the body. The reported effects include decreased ability to metabolize glucose (similar to what occurs in diabetes) and increased levels of cortisol (a stress hormone involved in memory and regulation of blood sugar levels). The article also briefly alludes (in the quote at the bottom of page 1) to unspecified changes in brain and immune functioning with sleep deprivation.
The goal of this assignment is to enhance my knowledge about graduate school. The idea that the Grail is “Holy” derives directly from its connection with Christ himself. In the early thirteenth century, Arthurian poet Robert de Boron further Christianized and popularized the story of the Grail. He depicts the Grail as the vessel that Jesus of Nazareth used at the Last Supper and later, the receptacle that Joseph of Arimathea used to catch the drops of blood from Jesus Christ’s wounds as he hung from the Cross. Boron goes on to tell of Joseph’s imprisonment after giving up his own tomb for the burial of Christ. While in prison, Joseph was visited by an apparition of Christ and was given guardianship of the Grail after being told of the powers and importance of the cup. As soon as Joseph was freed, he and a small group of Christians carried the Grail with them through the Holy Land and eventually to Britain. During his journey, Joseph was instructed to create a table in commemoration of the Last Supper. In the legend, one seat was left vacant. Called the Siege Perilous, the seat could only be occupied by the destined Grail knight. He believed that the banking concept was the main reason why education was declining in the current educational system and should be substituted with a “libertarian” teaching style. In the banking concept, students held the initial purpose of being filled with the critical information but fail to associate and perceive the concept.
