Spring Arbor University makes a big deal about their Core classes, but at times it feels like they are a joke. Then students begin to realize the purpose behind all of it. Core 100 is a class designed to get the college career started off with the correct footing. The activities and events that affected my life the most were the Monday lectures, the Real Relationships readings, and the in class discussions. None of these alone would have been sufficient, but in tandem they provide an illuminating education into how our interactions with others shape who we are and what we become.
The Monday lectures were probably what I was most skeptical about going into Core, but they proved to be enlightening experiences. It was enticing to hear viewpoints from adults of diverse origins and backgrounds. I feared that I would be bored, listening to monologues from successful people bragging about how God and Christian colleges have led them to where they are today. Instead, the speakers were all genuine and usually explicitly stated that they do not believe that they have all the answers. The two speakers/talks I appreciated most were Dave Hopper and Mark VanValin.
Dave Hopper spoke on the significance of time and how few “moments” we have in life, even though it feels as though we have an

infinite amount. Not only that, but we have no idea how many moments we will have in life, given that we could die unexpectedly at any point in our lives. This was really good for me because it forced me to think about what I need to do right now instead of my hopes and plans for the future. I have been trying to think of ways to encourage more recycling on campus, from just asking friends to recycle, to putting out a recycling box on my floor that I take out for them whenever it is full. Mark VanValin spoke on quite a different issue. His topic focused on the five stages to a healthy bond and the three short circuits that get in the way of a prosperous marriage. Not all of what he said was new, but he put it all together in a way that was tangible and that I believe I will be able to reference for the rest of my life. I now know what to seek in a relationship leading to marriage and the activities to avoid because they are most likely to mess up that relationship. Real Relationships was a great partner book to speakers like Pastor VanValin.
Chapters such as “Sex, lies, and the Great Deception” supported everything he was saying. This book, though, talked about all of our relationships not just potentially romantic ones. It was interesting to read about the experiences of other young Christians struggling with family and friend relationships, besides just dating ones. It was also interesting to have a husband-wife couple coauthor the book, it gave it an intrinsic value that I do not think would have been there without both of them. This book showed me how big of a role family is in our lives and what is necessary for guys and girls to be just
friends.
I believe the most important concept that I gained from reading the book was to remain faithful, in good times and in bad. Walking blindly can be very terrifying, but God always has a plan for each and every one of us. At times, the plan remains unseen, and that should not deter or slow me on the path that my heart is yearning
I can relate this book to my life in many ways; it was easier for me to relate to this book because were both 18 year old girls who want to live life the right way. Also I don’t want to live life trying to be like everyone else, so this was really encouraging to me. A part that helped me was the part about confidence and how important that is. Its important to have confidence in your faith because say you get in a situation you can protect your faith and stand up for what you believe. Another part that I can really apply to my life was how when people were talking about her she didn’t even beg to know. Personally whenever I hear that someone was talking about me, I really want to know what they said! This helped me to learn that why fill my brain with negativity sinful gossip, because that’s not what Jesus would do.
In the first half of Theology 104, we went over many different topics. All these topics gave me a wonderful and better understanding of Theology and Christianity. I got a better understanding of Jesus claiming to be God, as well as our character development and how it plays a very vital part of our lives as Christians. By asking Jesus into our lives, we will be highly rewarded. For this I am
My favorite part of the book was the chapter on “Ethics.” I believe my moral compass will guide me in the work place, amongst many other places. For example; the ENTJ, is said to be driven by success. If I do get into a corporate position or become a politician, I’m sure there will be bribes and offers that require me to compromise my beliefs for a move up “the ladder.” As a believing Christian I’ll be sure to look out for possible avenues of temptation although; I’m sure I won’t make such dreadful mistakes, the information I’ve gained from my research makes me want to be all the more
In this essay we will consider a much more recent approach to time that came to the fore in the twentieth century. In 1908 James McTaggart published an article in Mind entitled 'The Unreality of Time', in which, as the title implies, he argued that there is in reality no such thing as time. Now although this claim was in itself startling, probably what was even more significant than McTaggart's arguments was his way of stating them. It was in this paper that McTaggart first drew his now standard distinction between two ways of saying when things happen. In this essay we shall outline these ways of describing events and then discuss the merits and demerits of each, and examine what has become known as the 'tensed versus tenseless' debate on temporal becoming.
In COL 101 I have learned many new things about college. Since this is my first semester at college I did not really know where everything was. This class really helped me to learn new things about myself, including what resources are available to me, what my plan for the future is, and the many changes I have endured during this course.
Wright gives the believer (or nonbeliever alike) a very clear picture of morality. In this book, he shows how we are to keep our moral conduct. Not only is he showing us how to keep our moral conduct. He is also showing us how to be true to ourselves as Christians. As a result, Wright incorporates truth about how one can see or view Christian character. Wright at one point says, “I hope to show in this book that the biblical vision of what human life is ultimately or will open up a perspective in which questions of behavior on the one hand, and of a fulfilled human life on the
With college right around the corner and taking a college course gave a real sense of how college classes are going to work giving me an edge over all of the other students going to college that didn’t take a dual enrollment course. Dual enrollment was honestly one of the best decisions I made in my academic career because like what I was saying this class taught me the inner workings of how most assignment are going to be turned in, what it means to be self-reliant/ on your own have no help with assignment from your parents, experiencing a course that only a handful of assignment rather than a ton of assignment ends up making up over eighty percent of your grade (getting you to work extra hard so you won’t fail) and finally that you have to actually interact with the professor/teacher if you need help or are having trouble with an
...s uplifting and incredibly honest. He tells the reader things that the government probably would not tell you, or encourage you to do. He also emphasizes that even though this world secularizes everything you can always find God in the midst of it all. This document is right on the money with working conditions. Today, even things like slavery are still relevant right now. History tends to repeat itself and the issues that pertained to him while writing this document still exist today. Unions have been created, the poor still suffer, and the Church is persistent in their advocacy against things that are not right in the world.
I personally am not a religious person, but that does not mean that I am not a spiritual person. A large belief that I have carried is that religious or not, you must constantly question, challenge, and forge your own ideas. This is something that I think this class was able to help me with even more. It is highly important for me to constantly challenge, question, and forge my own beliefs. Something that I think every person religious, or not, should be doing. If someone asks you what you believe, it should be a carefully thought out answer that has been contemplated over the course of months and years, simply regurgitating scripture or blindly following your parent’s beliefs is a disservice to yourself and your community. I think that this class did a good job allowing people the opportunity to expand their minds and be able to discuss their spirituality in a controlled religiously diverse setting.
Taking this class is one of the best decision that I made. At first I was hesitant to take this class and simply just want a credit. All of the topic that we discussed in the class are mind blowing and increasing our awareness about our society.
The scientific definition of time is a measurement of progress that is relative to an individual’s perception of events (HowStuffWorks.com, 2010). A psychological study proves that these viewpoints are
From the videos to the exam topics a variety of the key concepts presented strongly relate to life experience I have encountered personally and in my organization.
Time acts as an illusion to many humans. Time should not restrict our actions or feelings. As the countdown of life continues on, one must recognize that the fulfillment in life is not in the years lived but, the memories experienced. Life is about relationships and the love produced from them not by years of marriage. Life may be temporary but, memories and love live on forever in eternity.
Most of our days come and go in a blur, uneventful and of negligible importance. In the midst of the blur every now and then life hits you with moments that unleash a cascade of emotion that will be permanently embedded in your mind forever. That kind of memory that makes sleep an impossible task when that memory comes crashing back into your mind at 3 in the morning. That kind of memory that awakened you from your slumber and made you able to see the world far more clearly. That kind of memory that took consumed the person you were and transformed you into someone alien to whom you once were. If my life were to be summarized into a timeline of events, the first to make it on this timeline of my life would be the time I realized that death surrounds us and can come in the blink
