In this paper I will be discussing the controversial views on cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation is known as “the taking of something produced by members of one culture by members of another.” (Young). Claiming something that is not yours as your own is something that is commonly found throughout the world. However, when does this go too far? At what point is cultural appropriation found offensive? I will be discussing how cultural appropriation is commonly misused. I will illustrate how cultural appropriation is found throughout India and it’s diverse culture. Last, I will talk about how we might use cultural appropriation to our advantage; to become aware of cultural appropriation so that we might not offend those in certain cultures. For instance, in the article “Why a Bindi is NOT an Example of Cultural Appropriation”, Anjali mentions that although there are certain times cultural appropriation is unethical, in some instances it is acceptable. There was an outburst of debate in India when Selena Gomez wore a ‘bindi’ in a musical performance. Many disputed that it was wrong of her to wear the bindi because it had no significance in her musical performance. However, Anjali argues that in this case, it was fine for her to wear the bindi because there is no significance left in the bindi anyways. She stated that the bindi has lost its original religious meaning for a long time now, and that the bindi does not mean anything to the Hindu culture anymore. Even after surveying a group of 50 Hindu women, “not one could accurately explain its history, religious, or spiritual significance.” (Joshi).
