Leadership is meant to create a system to lessen chaos and create order, as well as to improve individuals and teams. The article discusses three leadership styles, which include transformational, contingent reward, and laissez-faire. Transformational leadership is considered active command and uses confidence-building to encourage any followers to rethink and reframe the future to create a positive outlook. It is easy to rule out laissez-faire leadership because, since the leader does not often engage with the followers regarding important matter, the use of humor could be seen as procrastination; it can make followers forget about their dissatisfaction with the leader, since they feel more relaxed, but this still leads to poor performance (Avolio, Howell, & Sosik, 1999). Contingent reward leadership can have a positive effect on behavior when used with humor because it creates a calmer, relaxed work environment and the leader can use humor to make sure that followers understand what needs to be done, which can be seen in the study’s results showing a positive correlation between this leadership and the usage of humor. Unfortunately, only a low amount of humor with contingent reward leadership led to a positive effect on behavior, since using humor more often led to worse performance (Avolio, Howell, & Sosik, 1999). You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make him drink is a proverb I have heard since I was young. Leadership is the skill of influencing people to accomplish goals (Huber, 2014). In today’s world with policy and technological changes the leaders must use their leadership skills to not only get the horse to the water, have him drink, but also do it with a smile an invite others to join him. Leaders use a variety of styles to accomplish their goals. I will discuss the leadership style that I utilize most often, how my style relates to leadership theories and the work type environment it is most useful in.

Each of the numerous leadership styles can be beneficial if utilized in an appropriate means. I have chosen three leaders and their unique leadership styles to discuss in this paper. The unique styles that will be discussed are situational leadership, transformational leadership, and laissez-faire leadership. I will also discuss each leader’s approaches, their fundamental leadership principles, and how each leader used their style within their profession.

What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. Transformational leaders are needed to transform low performing organizations to acceptable to high performance. At other times, the leader is expected to move an organization from a crisis. When in a leadership role, it is important to consider both the task and relationship aspects of a situation. Both of these aspects are essential in order to achieve the goal successfully. Task aspects are more or less directly related to achieving the end goal. It incorporates the actions required from a leader’s followers in order to achieve the desired results. It is much more geared towards performance than the relationship aspects are. Looking at the relationship side of leadership, it focuses more so on the followers and their well-being. A leader who is more relationship oriented will spend more time talking to their followers and trying to understand how to motivate them. They try to make more of a personal connection than task-oriented leaders do.
