Conflict always rises from differences because it is a disagreement of people and their values, motivations, perceptions, ideas and desires. Not necessarily these differences seem unimportant however a conflict causes strong feelings, a relational need of core problem, feelings of respect and value and closeness and intimacy. Conflict can be resolved through mediation, negotiation and arbitration process however mediation is the best means to resolve conflict in every sector. Different figures have different definition about mediation but there is still no universally agreed definition of general theory of mediation however Moore’s (2003) mediation definition is appeared more scientific and universal. However, the main objective of this journal is to focus concept of conflict. Thakore, D. (2013) has mentioned that conflict cannot be avoided because it is an inevitable part of the teams and outcome of the behaviors. When people interact, conflict arises thus it is an integral part of the human life (Thakore, D. 2013). Expression of hostility, negative attitudes, antagonism, aggression, ego, rivalry and misunderstanding are the causes of the conflict (see also, Schellenberg, 1996). Conflict has been studied over centuries with different approach solutions however more methodical and rational studies were started since twentieth centuries. As academically, political anthropology, part of social anthropology, marked as publication of “African Political Systems” in 1940 started review “conflict” part and flourished as conflict resolution approach by Fortes and Evans- Prichard (Thakore, D. 2013). Wilson and Kolb (1949) cited in (Colser, 1964) trusted that conflict has a “disjunctive” effect. Some other scholars have agreed with this view for instance, Park and Burgess (1991) and Simmel (1955) each communication among the people is an interaction so it is conflict (cited Colser, 1964). Many of scholars take conflict positively as it is a means to resolve and avert totally splitting or separation. Bohannan (1967: XI-XIV) believed that conflict to be basic as culture is in society (Thakore, D. 2013) that might lead the society and control the social problems with better cultural progress and care of social orders. Schellenberg (1996) stated that, conflict is a flexible approach therefore, it can be used positively and negatively both however it is neither bad not good but it is most significant in human social

In considering the probable benefits of mediation, Ridley-Duff & Bennett (2011) argues it would be helpful to consider various critical underlying theoretical questions: What is the reasons the negotiation failed? What are the barriers of effective resolution conflict by negotiation? Mediation saves time, money, promotes communication and cooperation, provides an environment to voluntarily resolve disputes, private and confidential, can reduce hostility and encourage healthy relationships, stress, can result in a win-win solution (Clarkson, Cross, Jentz & Miller,
College life can be quite the adjustment for most new students. When entering the collegiate atmosphere, there are new, sometimes unspoken, social rules and norms. With so many new social elements for students to acclimate to, already difficult situations, such as any form of conflict, are often particularly difficult to address. Fortunately, with a clear understanding of the various forms of conflict management, new students can learn to effectively communicate regarding any subject matter they may encounter.
In this paper, conflict, its effects, and some management and resolution strategies as they relate to team dynamics will be discussed. Understanding the various conflict resolution methods, including how and when to apply them, is of utmost importance. In teams, different types of conflict call for different solutions. Conflict resolution is certainly not an area in which one size fits all. Conflict may be classified as Substantive, Procedural, or Affective, depending upon the context to which it relates.
In several occasions, conflict occurs in the communication of one or two people. Several people have thought of conflict as cases involving pouring of furious anger in a communication process. Nonetheless, conflict is the misinterpretation of an individual’s words or values (Huan & YAzdanifard, 2012). Conflict can also be due to limited resources in an organization (Riaz & Junaid, 2010). Conflict may as well arise due to poor communication or the use of inappropriate communication channel of transmission of information between the involved parties. Management of conflict has various conflict management styles that include avoidance style, forcing style, passive-aggressive style, accommodating style, collaborating style and compromising style. Workplace conflict comes in two different kinds: task involving conflict, which focuses on the approaches used in resolving the problem and blaming conflict that has the aspects of blame and never brings element of resolving problems between the conflicting parties. In the perception of several individuals, relationship conflict is negative.
Conflict theory is a perspective derived from the work of Karl Marx, who believe that society is a dynamic entity and it is constantly undergoing changes driven by class conflict, who holds different interests, ideas and values, for competing scare resources and aiming to maximize their own-benefits. According to the founder of conflict theory, Karl Marx, society are divided into two category: the have and the do not have, the latter is dominated by the former ones who are those people with power in hands and with the greatest political, economic and social resources. Conflict theory assumes that society makes the norms to serve the interests of the powerful.
Goals are defined as, “what does each person want” (Wilmot & Hocker, 2011, p.72) Goals can also so be viewed as, and end or desired result. In regards to goals, we often try to reach and accomplish goals in our relationships. However, we often don’t achieve these goals due to existing conflicts, poor communication, or conflict styles.
Before understanding how to deal with conflict, one must understand what conflict is. Conflict can be defined as, “any situation in which incompatible goals, cognitions, or emotions within or between individuals or groups lead to opposition or antagonistic interaction” (Learning Team Toolkit, 2004, pp 242-243). Does the idea of conflict always have to carry a negative connotation? The growth and development of society would be a great deal slower if people never challenged each other’s ideas. The Learning Team Toolkit discusses three different views of conflict: traditiona...
Many people enjoy working or participating in a group or team, but when a group of people work together chances are that conflicts will occur. Hazleton describes conflict as the discrepancy between what is the perceived reality and what is seen as ideal (2007). “We enter into conflicts reluctantly, cautiously, angrily, nervously, confidently- and emerge from them battered, exhausted, sad, satisfied, triumphant. And still many of us underestimate or overlook the merits of conflict- the opportunity conflict offers every time it occurs” (Schilling, nd.). Conflict does not have to lead to a hostile environment or to broken relationships. Conflict if resolved effectively can lead to a positive experience for everyone involved. First, there must be an understanding of the reasons why conflicts occur. The conflict must be approached with an open mind. Using specific strategies can lead to a successful resolution for all parties involved. The Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument states “there are five general approaches to dealing with conflict. The five approaches are avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise, and collaboration. Conflict resolution is situational and no one approach provides the best or right approach for all circumstances” (Thomas, 2000).
workplace include greater total resources, greater knowledge band and a greater source of ideas. However, these advantages can also bring on conflict within teams and the entire workplace. Varney (1989) reported that conflict remained the number one problem within a large company. This was after several attempts were made to train management in conflict resolutions and procedures. However, the conflict remained. The conflict possibly remains because the managers and leaders did not pay attention to the seriousness of the issue. In order to maintain an effective team, leaders and team members must know and be proactive in the conflict resolution techniques and procedures.
“To live anyhow is better than not at all” (Chekhov 1) , the short story, The Bet commenced with the conflict when the person had no choice but to choose between the death penalty or life in prison. The Bet was originally written by Anton Chekhov, a profound Russian short-story writer who concentrated a lot on human values and the reflection of the extravagantly selfish Russian nobility. And through The Bet he was able to express all those ideas in two sides, the banker and the lawyer with the conflict along the story line.
In the organizational setting, it comes through job retention or desires to be met, employer/employee disagreements and settlement, confidentiality reports and information sharing; all these leads to change in feeling and attitude. However, there are conflict management challenges facing many organizations in Nigeria. It is phenomenal, but can be controlled or managed. Notably, there seems to be growing importance of the conflict in various organizations. Olu and Adesobomi (2013) in a survey revealed that managers spend most of their time handling issues and that conflict management is important for them to function effectively. This means that conflict is always an issue and that peace is one of the important tools needed for an effective running of the organizational Conflict Levels of Educational Supervisors”, stated that supervisors sometimes experience organizational conflict which included other inter-groups and even with departmental heads. Furthermore, communication competence was reported to predict organization conflict. However, conflict remains an issue in organizations and the objective of conflict management are mainly to issue good lasting and quality solution. It is to give disputants fair process and sense of empowerment to resolve conflicts (Spiroska, 2014). This means that conflict is a continuous process and does not cease. However, as a result of a large number of cases of poor conflict management, its
Conflict management model is propounded effective when the result of conflict is productive or acceptable for all the parties involved. The main motive of any conflict management model is to reduce the impact of conflict on negative note and guide parties towards agreement and strong relationship. This study is to analyze the effectiveness of Rahim’s Meta or Dual concern model for conflict management.
It is interesting how people understand, interpret, and behave in conflict. There are psychological processes that influence conflict interaction through human behavior at a sub-conscious level. Psychodynamic perspective is the way aggressive impulses and anxiety is channeled, which plays a critical role in conflict communication because the energy determines how someone reacts to conflict. The energy must be managed. For example, aggressive energy from feelings of guilt or lack of self-worth will raise a person’s heart beat and tense up their muscles. It can cause a fight or flight response. There are strategies for dealing with aggression and anxiety, for example, suppression or displacement of the aggressive energy and stress. The psychodynamic
According to McShane and Von Glinow, conflict is “a process in which one party perceives that his or her interests are being opposed or negatively affected by another party” (328). The Conflict Process Model begins with the different sources of conflict; these sources lead one or more parties to perceive that a conflict exists. These perceptions interact with emotions and manifest themselves in the behavior towards other parties. The arrows in the figure illustrate the series of conflict episodes that cycle into conflict escalation (McShane and Von Glinow 331-332).
