Although there is a belief that good leaders are born, not made, there are key qualities that can be learned in order to lead successfully. In the computer field, effective leadership is essential in order to guide teams to success. In many cases, the field utilizes teams of workers who work at different levels of the product generation. To ensure success of such teams, effective leadership is vital. Effective leadership requires different positive attributes. Personal responsibility ensures that the leader is in charge for the actions of all the members in the team. This requires the leader to guide all the members in the right path which ensures that they stick to the overall organizational goals. An effective leader is also required to be a good communicator. Good communication skills ensure that the leader can pass information to the members well. It is also required in the relation between the leader and other stakeholders. Sometimes, I take more tasks than I can manage. This has caused me to perform some activities without paying attention to important details. In the computer field, this could lead to risks as every tiny data is important for the success of the project. I also learned that I loose motivation when faced with difficult task which makes me loose interest fast. I realized that this trait could affect my ability to provide leadership since leaders are required to motivate their team members especially when faced with challenges. In order to correct these weaknesses, my plan of resolve will require me to become more accurate in my work. This will eliminate cases where I have missed important details in my work. It will also help me in adopting professionalism, where tasks must be fully done to meet all standards. Additionally, I learnt to become optimistic in order to cultivate motivation skills. The role of a leader is often inaccurately defined as an individual who is in a position to give orders. However, there are enormous differences in the attributes of an outstanding leader, and one of mediocrity. An outstanding leader, above all else, is a role model for their peers. In doing so, a leader of the highest caliber is trustworthy in both their peer’s trust for the leader as well as the leader’s trust of their peers. A leader must also display exceptional skill in communication which transcends speaking and, more importantly, includes listening and consideration to the ideas presented to them. Leaders transform individuals around them allowing them to work to their full potential. In order for a leader to be successful they must be knowledgeable, self- confident, and effective communicators. When we think about how it used to be 100 years ago, the only people in leadership roles where men, and there was no presence of women. Why is it that we tend to see more men in leadership positions? Usually when we think of what a leader looks like, we tend to describe them as powerful, assertive and confidence. Because of stereotypes our society immediately labels this person as a man, due to the roles that we are expected to follow. Today, there has been a huge shift for women in leadership positions; however, there are many challenges that they still have to overcome. A process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal (Northouse, 2007) defines a leader. Moreover, leaders come in different forms whether in a professional, educational, or group setting. As a male college student and an advocate for equal rights between men and women, my understanding of the struggles that women face has a huge impact on my philosophy of leadership. First of all, I would like to mention my inability to control emotions and react efficiently to other people’s problems and worries. Very often, I am unable to make the right decision due to the immediate confusion and fear to lose time.
