Military life is like civilian life in many ways. For the most part you still work a regular job, you have to keep your life, housing, bills, car and other things in order. You will have a boss, work with other people, and have to exhibit initiative if you want to get ahead in your job. On the other hand, the military lifestyle carries much more responsibility than the civilian lifestyle. There is always the threat of heading into a combat zone and having to risk your life. You have to be on time to work, there are no "I got stuck in traffic" excuses. You must always be well-groomed, and live up to the working and presentation standards of your specific military branch. You never have the option of saying "no" or just quitting …show more content…
when you feel like it. After all, you did swear to protect the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic. If you fail, which you won't, the security and the protection of the people of the country is at stake. The military life offers many benefits that are not available to most of the people working in the civilian sector. Joining the military is a defining moment in that person’s life and it has long-term effects on your family. The sacrifices of a military member may include, deployment to a combat zone, most likely in a foreign country which results in long-term stays from your home and family. Serving in the military also means being stationed, for most, in far off locations. Nonetheless, the benefits of serving in the military outweigh any conceived possibility of danger, discomfort, or homesickness. The military provides education, specialized training and health care, including medical, dental, vision and hospitalization, which includes spouse and children, this is at no charge. Most civilians have to pay for their own insurance, all or part and usually have to pay for their dependents to have coverage. The military also creates jobs and offers the military member and their family to travel the world. The current state of the job market in America is very limited to those with little education or any specialized job training.
For civilians seeking a new career, they are forced with having to pay for the training or expensive college costs unlike the military members. The military has an array of special jobs that you are able to choose from upon entering or at any time during their career. In the military, personnel are paid while in school learning their specific job, unlike the civilian sector who usually must maintain a job in order to have a steady income. A lot of the companies in today’s business world will not hire you without some type of degree. Many civilian college students have a hard time finding a job even with a specialized degree. For many who serve in any branch of the United States Military, once their enlistment is complete, job searching becomes a priority. There are many companies that will consider hiring a former military man or woman before they will hire a person with or without formal training, in part, because of the responsibilities that the military puts on one and the strict discipline military training provides. Although there are many civilian jobs that offer retirement, there are a lot that do not. The military has a set retirement plan and savings plan. If one joins the military at the age of eighteen, they will have a great retirement at the age of thirty-eight, twenty short years after enlistment. Retiring at the age of thirty-eight, after receiving a free college education and a degree will give an enlisted extra income while having a second
career. Who in the civilian world can live in a house for free? Not many, unless you still live with your parents. While in the military, one can live on base, in the dorms, on base housing or off base and the military will pay for your housing with basic housing allowance. If one is permitted to live off base, it doesn’t always cover all costs but it will, for the most part, pay all housing expenses. Living on base, whether in a dorm, which is where most of the non-married people are required to live or in a house on base, all expenses are paid including electricity, water and gas bills, along with garbage pick-up. For those who live in on base housing, they also receive basic housing allowance. While serving in the military, one is afforded thirty days of leave or known in the civilian world as vacation. Just as working as a civilian employee, the military enlisted must request for time off or leave and it has to be approved by a supervisor, of a higher rank. One difference is, military can roll over their leave time up to sixty days. If you are lucky enough to have a civilian job that offers vacation time, the time allotted is usually two weeks. Although not all business or restaurants offer a discount for items purchased to enlisted military and veterans, with the military identification proof, there are many that do. For civilians, unless the business has a sale with a discounted price on certain items, they will not receive an extra discount, unless they are a senior citizen. Yes, there are many companies in the civilian world who pay their employees a far larger salary than a military person receives however rewarding their jobs may be, one who serves their country in a United States Military branch also receives a great reward. Even though military pay may be considered by many at poverty level, those who serve have a great sense of pride and dignity. Pride because they have overcome the many trials of hard and grueling tasks during their Basic Boot Camp training, long required training weeks and many training schools in their career field. As for me, I am proud to serve my country. My family couldn’t be more proud of me. Many of my family members, some I know, love and hold close to my heart have served in every branch of the United States military. I know there is a long generation of family who have served that I don’t know, who have died serving or are veterans. For their sacrifices, I am thankful. I also have several friends with whom I attended school with who now serve our great country. It is a great honor to be serving with a brotherhood and sisterhood with those who have gone before me, who are now veterans and those who are now serving.
Though grueling and tedious, the rewards for hard work and studying are priceless. You leave the military with a whole new meaning of life. To be able to protect your friends, family, and country is an honor that anyone should be able to enjoy.
From the parent’s perspective, the military has much to offer for a child’s development. There are many opportunities children born in a military family get to experience that is beneficial to their development. The military lifestyle promotes the opportunity to be more culturally diverse, socially strong, and mature level of positive characteristics can help develop a child.
I know when I got my discharge papers I drove off base and thought to myself driving home what am I going to do now? I did not know how to wake up before the rooster’s crow. While still serving the soldiers always say that, we do more work before seven in the morning than most do in a day. It is also very challenging in terms of being always hyperactive vigilant. Driving down the road being extra careful or just having a place in life. Getting out of the military was a complete life-changing event. Even though I gave many orders, being a team-leader I also received many orders. Soldiers always have a boss in the military. I know I was a smart person or I try to think that I am anyway. I did not have a place I thought. That is what the military took from me. The Infantry has a sick sense of humor, some that civilians may not every get. I would have to say that the cursing would have to be a problem of adapting too. I remember coming home and my wife always got on to me about the language I use but I thought it was normal. It was very challenging of having to sit at the dinner table not knowing what to say because I would not know if they would even understand.
Joining the military is not just a job or a path to a career, but a life style that requires dedication. The life style of a service member is not easy and is made up of many different characteristics which is known as the warrior society. Authoritarian structure, isolation and alienation, class system, parent absence, importance of mission, and preparation for disaster: war make up the culture aspects of the warrior society and will be discussed in further detail (Hall, 2008).
The marine corps will help an individual further on his career by allowing the person to go to college or have colleges on bases. Specially “Officers earn promotion based on time in rank, successful performance in assignments and appropriate education” the Marine corps also have special school to teach warfare and leadership to the commanding officers, so they can be the best in the world. They can study abroad in Rome or in the Marine college which are both great honors for anyone that can enter. the rank also affects the salary a person may be earning; “as a marine corps officer a person may be paid from $35,000 to $200,000 a year depending on rank and also experience within the rank”, the more experience the more the money plus all the benefits that come from being in the marine (Marines pay ranks). The advantages of becoming a Marine, “far exceed a simple list of benefits: those who earn our title are supported by the Marine Corps brotherhood. Tangible benefits include financial resources, family healthcare and insurance, housing and facilities, education, travel, vacation, and recreation” these are the pretty good benefits considering some jobs do not even have benefits for its’ employees (Marines). This organization does worry about its employees to have the best they need. After completing all his service to the Marines, a fellow marine may retire, so the marines also have some benefits to the
In June 2013 Army Doctrine Reference Publication 1 (ADRP1) “The Army Profession” was released and the website http://cape.army.mil was created. In (ADRP1), it states there are five essential characteristics of the Army Profession, trust, military expertise, honorable service, Esprit de Corps, and stewardship (ADRP1, 2013). Those characteristics is what I think separates a Soldier from a civilian. No one should think that their job or occupation is harder or more important than someone else’s. It takes all kinds of professions to make this country work but the Army could not be as successful as it is today without our professionals teaching, coaching, mentoring and preserving these five characteristics.
Being a military member in the armed forces across all branches will have a positive and negative impact in both personal and professional areas of life. All military members take the oath of enlistment before they join it is a requirement before attending basic training. What most service members do not realize is that they are completely oblivious to the road that lies ahead of them. Most people join the military for a number a personal reason such as money, education, and a sense of stability. Others may join the military in hopes of being a part of something greater than themselves, they may see it as a chance to serve their country. No matter what drives one to join the armed forces it is safe to say that they will encounter both good
"A young man who does not have what it takes to perform military service is not likely to have what it takes to make a living." When joining the military you must perform your best to protect our country. Tons of men and women around the world fight for the country and make a career out of it. There are three major branches and many different jobs to go with each one. Each have many specific tasks. (Robbie Hughes Interview)
The benefits of the military have grown excessively, the military offers so many good benefits that it is almost a crim not to take advantage of them. The Military is an excellent career choice that presents its soldiers with outstanding benefits and experiences.
Being a military child and wife for 19 years has made me so much more patriotic, than a lot of other I know. It has made me more aware of the freedoms we have, why we have them, and the sacrifices that have been made by others so we could keep them. A world that people seem to forget about if they do not watch the news and one that they do not know much about. Not only do come civilian people not consider what current military families go through on a daily basis, but also we forget about those military families in the past during other wars that helped give our country the freedoms we have today.
Living the “military life” is very different from any other lifestyle. It is one, that that at times, is controlled by others. Military families are always on someone else’s time. Plans are impossible to make and everything is spur of the moment. Some don’t have the foresight to see that it is a temporary situation. There is a whole life to live after the military. Not only is it not a bad way to live, but if one can roll with the tide, it may just end up being a pretty good
... and the purpose of serving in a military branch of service. The reason for this is because certain individuals take the responsibility of being a U.S. Soldier as a typical 9-5 job and a reason for collecting a paycheck. Some also feel that the training is inadequate, repetitive and not allowing the individual to actually learn about combat situations and how to protect themselves.
My life in the military was challenging yet rewarding. I have received an enormous amount of training for the two different jobs I served in. I have been to a multitude of duty stations. Also I have been deployed four separate times and worked many soldiers along the way. I had enjoyable careers while in the Army and have done and seen a lot.
In the United States, there’s the guarantee to pursue happiness. Having a mandatory system of military service could violate that guarantee for many people. The average person doesn’t have the final say in the process and feeling forced to serve creates second-class services quite often.
