Punk Rock and Jamaican SKA are two very well-known music genres, but they are not as popular as they were when they first began. However there still is a huge fan base that likes to keep the music and culture of both genres alive. Also both music styles come from different countries, but stand for a similar meaning. When one hears the sound of the music it is easy to tell apart which music style is which, but many of the early punk bands were influenced by ska which started a huge connection that brought the two genres together. Ska and Punk sound very different, but resemble each other in some ways, but they also have their differences. First of all, Ska was formed in the late 1950’s in Jamaica. In ska, all the guitars are the same, they make quick and snappy upstroke strums and downstroke strums, with a quick palm mute of the strings. All of the guitarists in ska do the same thing, and sometimes one of the band members will have a solo. One of the other ways ska and punk can be told apart is by the beat. In punk music, the beat of the drum is very fast, strong, and balanced. Punk guitar also uses power chords to emphasize the beat. Ska’s beat is easier to identify because of the beat that the guitar makes, which is similar to a reggae beat. Ska and punk each have a different number of band members, and the band members have different roles. A punk band will have three or four members, one playing bass, one or two playing guitar, and one playing drums. In a lot of bands the lead singer is the lead guitarist, but sometimes it’s a bass player and even sometimes the drummer, but that is rare. Ska bands have many more people, It is normal in a ska band to have a bass player, one or two guitarists, a drummer, two or three trombones, one or two trumpets, and a singer. Despite its pop culture origins, rock music is arguably one of the strongest cultural factors to develop in this century. Artists such as Lennon, McCartney and Dylan defined the emotions of a generation and, in the last decade, it as even been acknowledged by members of the establishment which it hoped to change as a major influence in the country. In order to understand how rock went from a sign of rebellion to a cultural icon, it is necessary to understand where it came from.
The term Punk was coined by music reviewer Dave Marsh in 1971 to define a new and emerging style in music and culture. Anti-establishment in nature, Punk took its influence from the culture clashes of the 1960’s, creating a new style and sound that had a tremendous effect on fashion, art and youth culture in America and around the world. The effects of Punk are still felt on the cultural world today and the lifestyle is now being carried on by a new generation of young people.
Rock ‘n’ roll sound is upon bluesy sound which is from blacks music style and it has stronger drum beats than drum sound of blues. Rock ‘n’ roll also uses guitar and piano, but it has more electric sounds.
Music can be a very fun topic to discuss. Many people have different preferences or other first choices in the type of music they listen to. I like many different types of music. But as any other person I have one I prefer. Me, being the normal teenager, I prefer hip-hop.
The American rock band Nirvana impacted American culture and society by paving the way for the punk rock subculture into mainstream corporate America. Punk rock music stems from the rock genre but has its own agenda. The crux of punk rock is that it is a movement of the counterculture against the norms of society. Punk rock in itself is made up of a subculture of people who rejected the tameness of rock and roll music during the 1970s. (Masar, 2006, p. 8). The music stresses anti-establishment and anti-authoritarian ideas in its lyrics as well as scorns political idealism in American society. Before Nirvana unintentionally made punk rock a multi-million dollar commercialized genre of music, underground rock paved the way for the punk rock genre by creating core values that punk rockers drew upon.
The Punk Rock movement of the 1980’s was an explosion of hybrid and eccentric beats and lyrics that caught everyone’s attention, especially the young adolescents of the time period. The movement of Punk Rock took a major role in shaping the culture in the 80’s. The template for the 1980’s Punk Rock emerged from its preceptor of the 70’s Punk Rock which emerged from London. It’s loud and reckless tunes, to some sounded like noise, but to others it imposed many political standings and raised discussions of controversial topics in its lyrics. From this movements figurative and literal expressions through its bold fashion and uncensored lyrics, it definitely made a stance in the history of music and the 20th century.
This essay will discuss the key musical and lyrical characteristics of Ska music. We will briefly examine some of the musical styles that influenced the session musicians and composers working in Jamaica’s recoding industry at the time of the development of Ska. We will then go on to look at the musical and lyrical characteristics of three ska recordings. The first recording will be Derrick Morgan’s Forward March, the second recording this essay will look at will be Prince Busters Al’ Capone which was released in 1964. We will see how Busters recoding of Al Capone was written with much more focus on the instrumentation rather that the song lyrics while still having a clear concept for the song. The author will look at Millie Smalls recording of my boy lollipop a song that went number one in the UK a successful attempted to incorporate Ska’s musical characteristics into commercial popular music. This essay shall then briefly discuss how ska music’s main characteristics where used in conjunction with musical elements from other genres to bring about a revival ska.
When comparing Baroque era music to any modern day rock band, one most listen to the music with open ears. It is hard to identify the similarities of Baroque music and that of modern day rock. Although, the advances made in music during the Baroque era (1600-1750) are still noticeable in modern day rock. A perfect example of the noticeability of modern rock influenced by Baroque music can be heard in the Baroque music of Johann Sebastian Bach’s, “Brandenburg Concerto No 4 G major BWV 1049”(Classical Vault 2), and modern day rock band, This will destroy you combined instrumental music, “Three legged work horse and there are some” (TheRealConcertKing). Although both compositions show much difference, they are also very similar in the way the music is set up and thought out in music form.
To many Rock musicians who have helped popularize Rock in the more modern era, they describe rock as having a blues genre mixed in it. It is characterized as music with heavy beats and melodies when it first started to come up. It is also described as Black Rhythm, blues, and country white music. These bands usually consist of a guitar, drums, bass, and keyboard or their instrument that gives Rock it’s uniqueness. It is generally based on twelve-bar blues, and the first and third beats are heavily accented.
The generation of punks was influenced from many different kind of modern art and writers. The word punk was used in a defamatory manner, which has been considered with punk bechaviour of personal disrespect or has been used as a form of expression of feeling of hatred. It started by the youth people who were criticizing the economy, the rising unemploymend and they were seeking a reform of the goverment system. The punk culture is a subculture which defines the freedom, the liberty and the revolution against the stereotype society and the casual culture. They were anarchist or marxist. Their ideas were anti authoritarianism, the movement of DIY (Do It Yourself) and there only request was not to sell out. People all over the world listen to various types of music. The most popular kinds of music in America are hip hop and rock. As they seem to be totally different types of music they have a lot of similarities . Hip Hop and Rock music have more differences than similarities.

DIY punk began in the mid 70’s and had a huge impact on that time period. These punk bands were ones that did not follow societal norms and did not necessarily care about making a profit from their music. Our entire lives have been shaped by the events happening around us. Along with us many factors in our day to day lives have evolved too, including musical genre. One such genre is rock. Rock is a genre for the youth, by the youth, it has evolved to stay with the times and stand up for what’s right. In this essay I will prove why rock is a good example to show how genre has been defined, maintained, constructed and negotiated through the past 60-70 years since the very first Proto Rock song came out.
1. What is the difference between a. and a. Origins of reggae music: Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s. While sometimes used in a broad sense to refer to most types of popular Jamaican dance music, the term reggae more properly denotes a particular music style that evolved out of the earlier genres like Ska and Rocksteady. “Reggae” comes from the term “rege-rege” which means “rags” or “ragged clothes”, and this gives you your first clue into the story behind reggae music. Reggae is a music genre first developed in Jamaica in the late 1960s.
Most commonly referred to as “Seattle Sound”. Sometimes the songs sound like happy songs but if you listen to the words and what they are saying, it can turn into something really sad and depressing fast. The term grunge was said to be started in Seattle washington as a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged during the 1980s, by the 1990s it started to become more popular and it started spreading to california and other parts of the u.s. even to some parts of australia. Grunge really started to breakout with records from band such as Nirvana, pearl jam, and Sound Garden. One of Cobain's songs (Smells like teen spirit) was thought to have started the grunge movement. But there are many great Groups such as Sonic Youth, R.E.M. and Husker Do to name a few. Pop Punk was most often referred to by SoCal, with groups like Green Day Blink-182.
