90’s “Grunge Style” My paper is on grunge style from the 90s, Grunge to me sounds like dirty, messy, filthy, and not really a style. Grunge style it's more of a look , Vintage, clothes you would find at a Goodwill that expressed the Alternative Rock culture of the 90’s. than it is a smell or feeling. Most people have never heard the expressions from the 90s such as: I'm bound and hagged,(staying home on a saturday night) bloated,(drunk) in my wack slacks,(old ripped jeans) swinging on the flippity …show more content…
But with Kurt most people did think the grunge part might be because he never showered or cared much about his appearance. However he was by all definition “true to oneself” and he was great at It. Let's get back to his appearance, his appearance was that of someone who almost either didn’t care or that of a homeless person. He did spend many nights on friends couches. High fashion was not a concern for …show more content…
Most commonly referred to as “Seattle Sound”. Sometimes the songs sound like happy songs but if you listen to the words and what they are saying, it can turn into something really sad and depressing fast. The term grunge was said to be started in Seattle washington as a subgenre of alternative rock that emerged during the 1980s, by the 1990s it started to become more popular and it started spreading to california and other parts of the u.s. even to some parts of australia. Grunge really started to breakout with records from band such as Nirvana, pearl jam, and Sound Garden. One of Cobain's songs (Smells like teen spirit) was thought to have started the grunge movement. But there are many great Groups such as Sonic Youth, R.E.M. and Husker Do to name a few. Pop Punk was most often referred to by SoCal, with groups like Green Day Blink-182. One of my favorite Grunge bands is Pearl Jam notably named after Eddie Vetters great grand-mother Pearl who always cooked Jam. Pearl Jam sold more albums than Nirvana and thanks to MTV and Lalapaluzza they hit multi-platnum status. In efforts to keep concerst affordable they tried to keep the tickets below $20 but Ticketmaster presured them to charge higher prices. They took Ticketmaster to the Justice department for unfair Business practices. During which time New records were being made in 1994. The Album shot up to the top of the charts making it
Kurt Cobain the singer and guitarist of the 90s band Nirvana which was an alternative rock band from 1988 to 1994. Cobain was born in the town of Aberdeen Washington. Aberdeen is a rural white trash town that borders Seattle the birth place of “Grunge”. Before them at record stores there were special sections for alternative music, they popularized it. However many grunge bands were around such as Mud Honey and The Melvins.
Cobain, the lead guitarist, writer and singer for a band called Nirvana shook the groggy music world with the release of Smells Like Teen Spirit from the album Nevermind over twenty years ago on September 10, 1991. Nobody ever imagined that the simple four-chord progression would ever grab so much attention that it would hit number 6, let alone the Nevermind album knocking Michael Jackson’s Dangerous out of the No. 1 spot on the Billboards. (Shmoop) The fact that a grungy, distortion filled song became such a radio hit proved that Nirvana’s shy singer was now the much needed voice for the youth. New found fame hurdled the little known Cobain into the limelight almost instantly; hungry fans gobbled up and imitated everything they could about him. No longer were kids interested in listening the pop music that saturated the 80’s; they now had music that voiced how aloof they felt about their existence. Kids who were misunderstood by their parents and elders, finally...
He also said that I would rather be hated for who I am than be loved for who I am not.Meaning that he does not care what people think of him.The textual evidence is “Even though he was heroin drug addict he inspired a lot of people”. Our definition is shown in Kurt Cobain because of all the great things that he accomplished. Kurt Cobain is a hero because of him being an activist, and he lived his dream as becoming a rock star. He has made many good songs that have inspired people, and since he did all of this, this shows us that he tried to make the most of his life in the short years that he
The biggest influential song on Nirvana’s Nevermind album was the first song, “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” It reached number 6 on the Top 40 Charts. This song was groundbreaking for Nirvana and the alternative music scene as a whole. After the release of “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” white, middle-class youth of the United States finally had a style of music to call their own and express their “teenage anthems” (Stuessy, Joe). This was the first song to emerge from alternative rock and to be known in the mainstream of rock and roll, expressing their generation’s expectations, “...here we are now, entertain us”(Stuessy, Joe). “Smells like Teen Spirit” was Curt Cobain’s “attempt to write the ultimate pop song”(Nevermind, Nirvana). He used the soft-loud dynamics of his favorite band, the Pixies. The insidious hooks also showed his admiration for the Beatle’s John Lennon(Nevermind, Nirvana). The style used in this song is simple, plain, loud, and straight-forward. Musically, there is nothing very “innovative” or difficult. However, the reason it is important to rock history is because it brought America’s attention to the once before underground style of grunge. “A driving drum beat, powered by Novelsek’s rhythmic bass, and a memorable guitar riff and solo, mix perfectly with Kurt Cobain’s depressing yet humorous lyrics” (Kastner, Patrick). While it has certainly been overplayed in the past years, it is still an essential part of Rock history.
Music can also help people, particularly those going through painful times (such as adolescence) to understand that they are not alone and that other people have the same feelings that they do. After grunge-rock superstar Kurt Cobain committed suicide in April 1994, one fan wrote to Rolling Stone magazine describing how the music of Cobain's band, Nirvana, made her feel. "I could be feeling like total shit," wrote Carrie Loy, "and hear a Nirvana song and end up feeling renewed afterward.
Another reason why classic rock is the best is because you had to be talented to become famous. If you are vocally or musically talented now you have to be physically attractive to make it big. Now if you are pretty and have no musical talent you can throw in a lot of autotune and be “talented”. For example Steven Tyler, he was never really a attractive guy. He couldn’t just wake up one day and be pretty. He made it big for his talent. Same thing with the lead singer of Nirvana, Kurt Cobain. If you’re not attractive you might as well kiss your talent goodbye and find something else to do with your
Such as the tight leather pants and jackets, ripped jeans and jackets. Slick hair for men and frizzed up hair for women. It all became very popular in a variety of ages. No matter what are you were that was the style and people wanted to wear it. Hair styles were also very popular in all age ranges. From the oldest to the youngest, everyone wanted the slick hair for men and proofed up for women. Along with all the fashion rock and roll also brought along the popularity of the motorcycle as a method of transportation. Anyone that listened to rock and roll wanted to own one and ride one. Rock and roll also became a way of
The American rock band Nirvana impacted American culture and society by paving the way for the punk rock subculture into mainstream corporate America. Punk rock music stems from the rock genre but has its own agenda. The crux of punk rock is that it is a movement of the counterculture against the norms of society. Punk rock in itself is made up of a subculture of people who rejected the tameness of rock and roll music during the 1970s. (Masar, 2006, p. 8). The music stresses anti-establishment and anti-authoritarian ideas in its lyrics as well as scorns political idealism in American society. Before Nirvana unintentionally made punk rock a multi-million dollar commercialized genre of music, underground rock paved the way for the punk rock genre by creating core values that punk rockers drew upon.
In conclusion I feel authenticity in rock music has a huge part to play and although it is a very snobby culture of "we will like you until we've had enough" its still personal to every person and they have a choice to decide who fits into their perfect music world.
The Punk Rock movement of the 1980’s was an explosion of hybrid and eccentric beats and lyrics that caught everyone’s attention, especially the young adolescents of the time period. The movement of Punk Rock took a major role in shaping the culture in the 80’s. The template for the 1980’s Punk Rock emerged from its preceptor of the 70’s Punk Rock which emerged from London. It’s loud and reckless tunes, to some sounded like noise, but to others it imposed many political standings and raised discussions of controversial topics in its lyrics. From this movements figurative and literal expressions through its bold fashion and uncensored lyrics, it definitely made a stance in the history of music and the 20th century.
Cobain had grown up in a small town named Aberdeen. Washington. His childhood was disrupted by the divorce of his parents when he was eight. The success of Nirvana gave Kurt the authority to be the "spokesman" of his generation. Nirvana's music gave way to hundreds of other underground bands, but with this success came the media's attention and the almost total loss of privacy that came with it (Kurt Kobain's Obituary).
With rioting and terrorism taking place around the world, more aggressive and rebellious styles were being created. The punk look came with this; singers like Johnny Rotton and bands like The Ramones and the Sex Pistols were a few to lead a new generation of teens. There was also the introduction of glam-rock in which musicians mixed glamour with rock. Davis Bowie was the most successful. Fans copied his "rooster" hair cut. He made the androgynous look popular.
Nirvana was an American rock band formed by singer and artist Kurt Cobain and bass Krist Novoselic in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. Nirvana went through many changes having added members or replacing members especially with drummers, they went through three different drummers. There was a total of ten members who had the chance to play for Nirvana, but the classic lineup of Nirvana was: Kurt Cobain who lead in vocals and guitar, Krist Novoselic who lead in bass, and Dave Grohl, who lead in drums, and backing vocals. Nirvana, genre wise, was mostly associated as an alternative rock and grunge. (Gaar, 2011)
Our entire lives have been shaped by the events happening around us. Along with us many factors in our day to day lives have evolved too, including musical genre. One such genre is rock. Rock is a genre for the youth, by the youth, it has evolved to stay with the times and stand up for what’s right. In this essay I will prove why rock is a good example to show how genre has been defined, maintained, constructed and negotiated through the past 60-70 years since the very first Proto Rock song came out.
First, let us define what grunge is and where it comes from. Grunge as defined by web encyclopedia alt.culture is the cumulative influences of punk and ‘70s heavy metal (plus rain, coffee, cheap, potent beer, and occasionally heroin), a cohort of Seattle bands developed a soulful hard rock variant that was instrumental to alternative music’s early-‘90s move underground (altculture. com). Among the bands included in the definition Nirvana would be mainly the one that made this phenomenon popular. Released in 1991, Nevermind—a record by an obscure band working in a genre considered as hopelessly uncommercial—launched the grunge phenomenon and marked an era of unprecedented exposure for alternative acts. Then other bands like Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Candlebox followed the trail that Nirvana started in the grunge w...
