I recently read two very interesting poems. The two poems I read were, My Old Kentucky Home by Stephen A. Foster, and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” which is by an unknown author. “My Old Kentucky Home” is about someone thinking about their old home in Kentucky. “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” is about someone waiting to die and be taken to heaven in a chariot. I will compare and contrast the poetic elements in these two poems, more specifically the use of rhyming, tone, and point of view. Rhyming will be the first thing I will take a look at. Both poems use rhymes through the whole poem. In “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” they use the same words for rhyming a lot, for example they use the word home to rhyme six times. “My Old Kentucky Home” is a lot longer
The song does have good rhyme scheme, which is a very important poetic element. Zac Brown band writes, “Well I was raised up beneath the shade of a Georgia Pine / and that's home you know / sweet tea, pecan pie, and homemade wine, where the peaches grow…” (5-7). Every other line rhymes with the previous. This is a good poetic element to have, considering rhyme is commonly related to many great songs and poems. This does not make up for the lack of other poetic elements, and the simplicity of the writing. The differences between the two pieces is still very vass. The two pieces have two totally different objectives, which makes them have different writing styles. Claire Dederer writes “Song lyrics do a fine imitation of poetry, but they’re not quite the same thing. Lyrics are a vessel, designed to hold a singer’s voice. Poetry is its own solid object” (Bad Poem, Great Song). To some, the dilemma is cut and dry, songs just can’t be poetry.

The imagery used in the two poems is very similar at times. Both authors describe to the readers a picturesque view of nature, like plants blooming in the springs. Proof of this is found in “Lone Bather'; : “ is plant with lilies bursting from its heels.'; Similarly, in “The Swimmer'; the first
“Abandoned Farmhouse” and “Ode to Family Photographs” both capture the theme, essence of family. However, one poem highlights turbulent times and the other emphasizes flaws that add to the memory of family in a positive way. The mood of “Abandoned Farmhouse” is dark and lonesome, whereas the mood of “Ode to Family Photographs” is fatuous and nostalgic. Each poem shows evidence of a mood which contributes to the overall meaning of the poem.
Stories and poems are very different in many ways. Poems are often shorter than stories and have rhyme and meter. Stories do not have rhyme and meter and are usually much longer in length. Nevertheless a poem and a story can have many similarities. “Cherrylog Road” by James Dickey is a poem about a taboo relationship between two teenagers, while “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel García Márquez is about an “angel” that has washed up on the shore of this small town. Both “Cherrylog Road” and “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” have somewhat twisted theological parallels to the Bible.

Early on, poetry was often used with rhyme to remember things more accurately, this still rings true today, even though its use is more often to entertain. However, although it appeals to both the young, in children's books, and the old, in a more sophisticated and complex form, people are bound to have different preferences towards the different styles of poetry. Dobson’s poetry covers a variation of styles that captivate different individuals. “Her Story” is a lengthy poem with shorter stanzas. It’s free verse structure and simplistic language and face value ideas might appeal better to a younger audience. This poem includes quotes with informal language that children or teens would better understand. It’s narrative-based style is easy to follow, and although the poem covers very basic concepts, it’s message is still communicated subliminally. This particular poem is interesting because it focusses on the universal experience of pain and it’s relation to time. Similar to this is “The Householder”, written in a cyclical style, opening with a “house” and ending with a “home”. With only three stanzas, it is
When considering the structure of the poems, they are similar in that they are both written loosely in iambic pentameter. Also, they both have a notable structured rhyme scheme.
Both poems inspire their reader to look at their own life. In addition, they treat the reader to a full serving of historic literature that not only entertains, but also teaches valuable lesson in the form of morals and principles.
To start off both poems have a unique rhyme scheme. For example in “The Face in the Mirror” in the first stanza the words “glaring, drooping, inhering, and fighting all rhyme. On the other hand in “Miniver Cheevy” in the first stanza the words “born and scorn” rhyme and the words “seasons and reasons” rhyme. Contrastly, the actual rhyme scheme is different between both poems.
That made it easier because when choosing my words, I did not have to worry if they rhymed with the previous line. I used the same form as Shapiro did to properly preserve the original repetition in the poem and the way the poem flows. Choosing words and phrases that naturally flowed into the poem took a bit of work so that everything came out smooth and followed the original patterns of pauses from the original. The tone and diction of the text came off as very smooth and relaxed. I tried to imitate this in my poem by not having any major climaxes or conflicts.
