Next, I need address conflicts more effectively as “successful collaborative leaders need to be able to recognize the early signs of conflict as useful warnings of hidden differences in objectives or priorities” (Archer, & Cameron 2012). In working with the same business owners, we’ve learned one another’s strengths, weaknesses, and reaction to issues. However after years of working together their initial reaction to issues in the field has not changed. Their initial reaction tends to create a chaotic and unstable work environment. To address this weakness I need to practice emotional intelligence, as it is one of the key concepts towards being an effective collaborative leader (MacPhee, Li-Lu, Havaei, & Wen-Shan 2014). When utilizing emotional intelligence “individuals must have the ability to correctly perceive the emotions they are feeling and to accurately perceive others’ emotions. The ability to use emotions is based on knowledge of how emotions influence cognitions and behaviors” (MacPhee, Li-Lu, Havaei, & Wen-Shan 2014). Therefore I am going to utilize our (standing) Monday team meeting as an opportunity to share with my team what I am working on, and its current status. Typically our hour long meetings last about 15 to 30 minutes, and where we discuss team goals and items that need to be accomplished for the week. I will utilize the remaining 30 to 45 minutes to share with the team new functionality I am working on, and ask if they have questions related to it or any of their project work I can assist. Since we meet weekly, I want this to be an opportunity to encourage our team to collaborate and practice knowledge sharing.
