Recommended: Decision thinking
There comes a time in life when something happens to someone that will affect their future tremendously or when you have to make a decision that will change your future. In my life so far, I have made a drastic decision by choosing to club swim in the beginning of sophomore year that has affected my life since then, and for many years to come. This choice was drastic because it completely changed my lifestyle, friends, and my physical makeup. When I joined the club team, we were practicing two and a half hours, 6 days a week. This completely changed my lifestyle because before joining the team, I would come home do homework and have tons of free time. Now I had to actually learn how to manage time better. Joining a club swim team also changed up some of my friends. I started to get a lot closer with the kids that I was swimming with and gravitated to hanging out with them, rather than my school friends. This decision also changed my physical make up because I was working out so much. I put on thirteen pounds of muscle within 6 months, which changed me from a scrawny kid into someone who is a bit more defined muscle wise. …show more content…
For me, I made the decision to club swim spontaneously after deciding not to a couple months earlier. One of the major reasons I wanted to club swim, was to get faster for high school swimming so I could be one of the fastest kids on the team. Another reason why I wanted to was because I enjoyed high school swimming so much, that I wanted to continue swimming year round. Finally, the last reason why I wanted to do it was because one of my good friends decided that he wanted to join the same club team that I wanted to join. Eventually, after the first week of practice, I decided to join the team, which probably has been my best decision throughout high school so
I have been swimming year-round on a club team since the age of six and when I was younger improving came relatively easily. However, around age 13, I hit a training plateau despite having the same work ethic and focus that I had previously had. I grew to despise swimming and at points I wanted to quit. However, unlike Junior, I had role models and mentors who were positive influences on me and who helped me to overcome this challenge. Primarily, I had several of my best friends on the team who convinced me to keep persevering and to not simply quit the sport that I loved so much just because I was no longer dropping time. For example, every day I watch my close friends Lizanne and Cate come to practice and give it their all, regardless of the numerous injuries and medical issues that plagued their swimming career; their positive outlook and dedication motivated me to try even harder than I had before. Moreover, I had by parents, something that Junior did not have; my parents were always there to support me after yet another disappointing meet reminding me that “you get five minutes for a win and five minutes for a lost”. My parents where my voice of reason as I tried to work through my issues; they were always there to encourage me, but also were very honest with me
An example of a medium decision I have made was to join FCCLA. It is a school club that stands for Family Career and Community Leaders of America. I did not think about this decision too much, and I just decided to be in the club because one of my friends were. It ended up being the right decision and has impacted my life. I have made new friends and done things to help within my
As a child I was not in to many sports or involved in school activities. Going through high school I figured out that being involved in a sport or a school club would make my high school experience better. The first and only sport I chose to do was track. Track changed my whole high school experience and life. I learned to never give up, and it kept me out of trouble throughout my four years of high school.
Imagine that it’s the closest swim meet of the season, and your team is losing by a mere two points. You know that your race could pull your team ahead, but you’re starting to doubt yourself. As the starting signal goes off, you dive in and hear your team explode into cheers. This gives you a boost of confidence and you pull ahead, slamming into the finish and out touching your opponents. With a smile on your face, you proudly turn to your teammates who are all screaming and jumping around. Joining a summer swim team ensures a summer filled with fun, and being with a community of supportive and happy people every day. Swim practice is also an amazing workout with serious health benefits, and can even help lower the risk of heart disease. Many people may be afraid of the commitment of practices and meets, but in reality, practices are not mandatory and are actually very fun, and meets are optional.
“BEEP. BEEP. BEEP,” My phone alarm went off at 5:30. The sun was shining through my window which filled my room with light and warmth. I groggily got out of bed and stumbled to the bathroom to grab my suit. I ran downstairs to pack my swim bag and eat breakfast. Today is the first day of high school swim. I am as excited as I am nervous. I've been swimming for a while but high school swim is very different. More meets. More practices. More competition. Megan came to pick me up for practice and she and Taylor were jamming out to music in the car the whole way to Appleton West. But all I could hear was my heart pounding in my chest.
When I first started cheering, I decided to participate because of two reasons: my mom forced me and my older sister, who I modeled after, cheered. As I got older and began to think for myself, I had engaged in cheer for so long that it became a habit. If my mom did not demand that I partake in cheer, I would not have been able to go through situations that sparked personal growth and knowledge. Cheerleading has given me opportunities to guide and interact with younger kids, which has influenced my decision to become a pediatrician.
A person does not experience many events that shape their life in a large way, whether it be for better or worse. I have had just one major situation that has sculpted me into the person that I am today. In February of 2008, I was diagnosed with a life changing disease; it would relieve me of the agony I had been experiencing for as long as I could remember, but also restrict my diet for the rest of my life.
A defining moment in my life was when I decided that I wanted to be an athletic trainer when I grow up. I knew I wanted to be athletic trainer because I want to stay in the athletic field once I finish my athletic career. For me there is no better job than one that I can interact with athletes on a daily basis and help them prevent injuries. Knowing my career path early helped me lay out my academic goals, this also brought up some challenges.
In one day we make a vast array of decisions, some seem small and some seem large, but they all impact our destiny. There are many tough choices that we must make in our lives. Which college to go to? Who to marry. How we want to exist.
I knew that joining the team in my junior year of school meant that I would never be the best at it, but I would try my hardest regardless of that. Being part of the team gave me something to work on everyday aside from school work. Each day, whether during practice, or a competition, I was constantly faced with different challenges to overcome, both physical or mental. These challenges helped me to grow as an individual and as a member of the team. One of my biggest accomplishments through swim was becoming a NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete my senior year. Other experiences, such as work and travel have also shaped me as person. Working, and earning money has taught me a great deal about money management as I save up for college, and has given me a look into the responsibilities of a working individual. Working has taught me the importance of communication and networking inside and outside the work space. As for traveling, taking a trip to Spain and France my senior year truly broadened my horizons. It was an amazing opportunity to grow and learn about the rich culture these countries possess; it also has made me begin to think seriously about opportunities to study abroad during my time at
These many choices have shaped who we are today: the people we met, the experiences we encountered, the lessons we learned. They have all made an impact on our lives and, in turn, we have also made a difference in the lives of others.
Life is full of defining moments that can impact a life negatively or positively. The consequences to actions are never known in the beginning but always play out in the end. My life as well as everyone else’s can be summed up to a series of decisions, both good and bad, that effected our lives and the lives around us. My choices in particular have not had life changing or drastic results, however, there is one decision that has seemingly changed my view on the world for the better.
One of the benefits of being part of the College of the Canyon swim team is the fact that swimming is an extremely healthy sport. Swimming is an extremely healthy sport it is a non-contact sport which is healthy for the body because the athlete is less likely to get severely injured or have permanent injuries unlike sports such as basketball and football. Another, benefit of swimming helps with strengthening. Swimmers are very healthy athletes because they constantly do cardio which allows them to be in good healthy shape, have fast metabolisms, have an incredibly strong core which results in them being stronger and leaner than most athletes. Unlike, sports like football they make the athlete bigger and stronger but, that can be damaging
I also got out of my comfort zone and joined volleyball. Living up to the promise I made to my mother helped me realize I like to learn. I took everything seriously and became the person I never thought I would become. I ended up taking this motivation all the way through high school and became extremely proud of the hard work I put in. Growing up with a deaf mother helped develop my skill of being a good listener.
I`ve made a lot of decisions in my short life however, none of them may be as crucial or life changing as the one I made this year. I`m quitting traditional high school, yes you heard that right, I am quitting traditional high school. Some of my reasons for doing so apply exclusively to my personal situation. However, most of the reasons that pushed me to leave traditional high school apply to everyone.
