Decision-Making Nutrorim has a lot to learn about decision-making. They can go about changing their decision-making process into an effective tool for the company several ways. Don Rifkin needs to change his leadership style and research the different methods of decision-making that will be useful for his company. He needs to reformulate the problem and consider all the employees’ ideas before a final decision is made. In order for good decisions to be made, Nutrorim will have to try different methods and learn through trial and tribulations to end the conflict that plagues their discussions. The main problem at Nutrotim is the decision-making process, or lack there of. When it is time to make a decision, there is a lot of bickering and conflict and no resolution. It is good that there are several different opinions on how to handle things, but the group needs to take the differences and make them work to their advantage. When people express differences openly and challenge underlying assumptions, they can flag real weaknesses and introduce new ideas (Garvin & Roberto, 2001). It would be effective for Nutrorim to discuss all their ideas and ways that they can incorporate their ideas into a universal solution. This way everyone feels that they are contributing in the decision-making process. Don has a way of trying to avoid conflict. When ChargeUp was in the marketing phase, the marketing manager asked the opinion of the entrepreneur Nora. Nora was not keen on the product with the new ingredient. This caused friction between her and the R&D manager Steve. Don’s solution to the situation was simply to end the conflict by tabling the issue. First, this causes Nora and Steve to feel that their opinion is not really a factor in the decision and they are not as willing to provide input into any other decisions concerning the product. Second, if Don would have at least inquired into why there was a difference of opinion Nora and Steve would have given feedback into their opinion and it could have helped the outcome of the decision and added a little unity to the group. Don realized that Nutrorim needed help in the decision-making area. He decided to get an expert to come in and give them advice on how to establish a reliable decision-making process. Bringing in an outside source to give advice is good and bad.
Too many instances of leaders just agreeing with staff recommendations and taking a far too conservative approach in their decision making has affected many units because many times decisions and actions are approached way too late. This article shows that objectively assess the information presented and making an effective decision within a reasonable timeframe would increase the effectiveness of each decision.

As the lone representative of Harborco, I was thrust into a 15 on 1 situation in the board room. I knew that though I held much power in the case, it was imperative to make sure the groups did not side together against me. I began simply by discussing the importance of the project and how I wish to gain everyone's support. I focused on the least powerful groups at first, awarding them small victories in order to gain support.
Delegating leadership responsibilities to in-groups poses a challenge of building a strong structure with a clear understanding of procedure. On the other side, if the leader cuts followers out of the decision making process, the newly formed relationships will suffer. The Normative Decision Model offers a recommendation for the ways leaders “adjust their decision style depending on the degree to which the quality of the decision is important and the likelihood that employees will accept the decision (Nahavandi, 2015).” An easy first step for leaders is to understand how many people will be effected by the decision (Nahavandi, 2015). Does it only concern an individual or is the whole group going to be impacted? Using the decision tree on page 76 of Nahavandi’s The Art and Science of Leadership (2015), leaders can effectively identify the appropriate decision style needed. A leader must adopt an autocratic style when the quality of the decision is not significant, when employees disagree, and when the employees don’t see eye to eye with the organizations goals (Nahavandi, 2015). While a consultative style is necessary when the employees will hold the responsibility of implementation; especially when employees agree with the overall goals of the organization (Nahavandi, 2015). Thinking critically and making decisions are important parts of today’s business environment. It is important to understand how the decision making process works and the steps involved. The nine steps of the decision making process are: identifying the problem, defining criteria, setting goals and objectives, evaluating the effect of the problem, identifying the causes of the problem, framing alternatives, evaluating impacts of the alternatives, making the decision, implementing the decision, and measuring the impacts. (Decision, 2007.) By using various methods and tools to assist in making important business decisions an individual can ensure the decisions they make will be as successful as possible. In this paper it will be examined how the decision making process can be followed using various tools and techniques to make successful business decisions by using these same tools and techniques during a thinking critically business scenario. The paper will also discuss how different tools and techniques could have been used to make different, yet still successful decisions.
The author’s of this paper spent a few days observing the various decision making processes used in their work environments. Each observed that no single decision making process is the only process used in his or her place of work. While there was a vast amount of different decision making processes used, it appears that data gathering is used by each place of employment. Employers also used surveying and another technique designed to build individual support. Dione’s employer uses various charts and tables to gather date prior to making decisions. These charts are used to track the progress of individuals and teams, progress is monitored and changes can be made based on the information gathered. Natacha’s employer has an organized plan of correctly identifying the problem, then gathering data and following up with meetings to ensure proper action is taken. Janelle’s employer uses surveys to gather information. Surveying is done at two important key times, once in the beginning of a change and then again a little later. This allows managers to assess the positive and negative of the situation and check for improvement. Stephanie’s employer uses a process of meeting with certain individual’s to get acceptance of the idea.
