A defining moment in my life was when I decided that I wanted to be an athletic trainer when I grow up. I knew I wanted to be athletic trainer because I want to stay in the athletic field once I finish my athletic career. For me there is no better job than one that I can interact with athletes on a daily basis and help them prevent injuries. Knowing my career path early helped me lay out my academic goals, this also brought up some challenges.
Before I committed over four years of my life to athletic training, I wanted to make that athletic training was the career path for me. To do so I took an anatomy class in the 2014-2015 school year and I am currently taking an athletic training class. Both of these classes have taught me various things

about the medical field and I have gotten the chance to get numerous clinical hours. Although these classes have been very informational, there have been challenges. Athletic training takes a great deal of time in class and outside class.
In the beginning of the year I had 6 classes, out of 8 periods, none of which were athletic training; this was the first challenge I faced. Without athletic training as a class I would feel less confident going into college with an athletic training degree. To overcome this challenge I went to my counselor, Mrs. Lord, and requested to have my schedule changed so that I could take the class. My counselor responded by saying it was not possible to change my schedule due to my AP class that I was taking during the period that athletic training was offered. I wanted to keep my AP class so I asked if there was anyway that I could make it work. Mrs. Lord replied with an option called independent study. Independent study allows students to take a class in an off period, they are the only one taking the class at that time. This allows for one-on-one teaching, which helps in a class like athletic training. This option being revealed to me helped me solve my first challenge.
Since I was officially taking athletic training, I started to realize how time consuming the class was. To pass athletic training the student must have at least 50 hours of work. This work consists of five days of classroom time and at least one hour outside of the classroom a week. The extra hour can be doing treatment with an athlete, helping out at a sporting event, evaluating an injury, doing administrative actions, and doing game day/practice
prep. To complete this extra hour, the student must go into the training room outside of class. Completing these hours brought upon a new challenge.
I would like to enter the University of Charleston’s Athletic Training Program on the basis that I love being around sports and I enjoy working with and taking care of athletes. I first became interested in Athletic Training when I was given a tour of the UNC Athletic Training facility by Kevin Guskiewicz, who is the current dean of UNC College of Arts and Sciences. He was the previous head Athletic Trainer for UNC. After the experience, I quickly enrolled in Athletic Training classes in high school and began to learn the basics for becoming an Athletic Trainer. I loved learning about different injuries and how to treat them because as a student athlete I am very accident prone and figuring out what is wrong with my body is important for my collegiate athletic career. I have also had a dream of working with professional athletes. I have been involved with sports my whole life and have always considered these professional athletes as my role models. By entering University of Charleston’s Athletic Training Program I
It is very clear that college athletes are very devoted and committed adults. It is also very easy to see that these young adults are swamped with practice and game schedules. Many people don’t realize exactly how much time is devoted to practices. An article by O'Shaughnessy (2011) provides a run down of how much time each athlete puts into different sports. Division I baseball players spend 42.1 hours a week practicing on the field.(O'Shaughnessy, 2011) Divi...
When completing an exercise a person is expecting results that day, during or post workout. Training is a long-term process that creates noticeable and physical results over a span of weeks, even months and years. Training involves planning with preparation for the training duration and progress towards a goal. The desire to win and be better than the competition is essentially important for professional and collegiate athletes. These athletes take training and preparation for a competition to a new level of determination and commitment. For the last two years, I have been working with the University of Oklahoma’s softball team as their student athletic trainer. I attend every practice, workout, and all of their games. As the student athletic trainer, I help with assessing their injuries, with treatment and rehabilitation of their injuries as well as injury prevention. I have watched these women go through some strenuous workouts and have seen their improvements. Some of the girls have asked about taking CrossFit classes or other workout programs during winter and summer breaks. Our strength coach advised against taking the CrossFit classes that he has not specifically approved. He
College is a time for young people to develop and grow not only in their education, but social aspects as well. One of the biggest social scenes found around college campuses are athletic events, but where would these college sports be without their dedicated athletes? Student athletes get a lot of praise for their achievements on the field, but tend to disregard the work they accomplish in the classroom. Living in a college environment as a student athlete has a great deal of advantages as well as disadvantages that affect education and anti-intellectualism.
My understanding of kinesiology prior to enrolling in the course, is that I knew kinesiology is the scientific study of human movement , and that it involved sports and exercise and physical activity.I 'm interested in kinesiology , because I love anything that has to do with sports, and to get more of a detailed report on how human movement plays such a big role in the sports world.I have played sports for most of my life my interests our football, basketball, baseball.I started football my eighth grade year, and continued to play threw high school, until I tore my meniscus and mcl so I skipped my junior year of football , and came back my senior year had a really great season started at right offensive tackle.Missing my junior year in football really took a toll on me ,I could have gained so much more experience playing if so. I 've played basketball probably since the third grade , and continued to play threw high school even threw my knee injury ,I played travel basketball as well a
I first became interested in athletic training during my freshman year of high school when I tore my anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). My athletic trainer was extremely helpful and comforting when this happened. Then, I was able to work with him through the rehabilitation process. Through all of this, my interest in sports medicine sparked and I began to consider athletic training as a profession. During the rest of my high school career, I learned about athletic training through first and second hand experiences. I had a couple more injuries where I was able to work with the school's athletic trainer and got the chance to understand what athletic training actually entails. Also, with being on various sports teams, I had several teammates
I am not the most intelligent person at my high school. However, I am still in the top ten percent of all students at a 6A high school with over 700 students in the senior class. I am not an amazing athlete with great speed or a monstrous figure. Yet, I am still a varsity linebacker. I am not defined by heroism or greatness or as a prodigy of an obscure talent. I am defined by my commitment.
Most student athletes have a demanding and rigorous schedule. This is partly because of the required twelve units minimum a semester to qualify as a full-time student. Without the full-time student status, they would be ineligible to play sports. That means at least three hours a day of courses on average. My schedule is similar to this, in that I am taking fourteen units this semester. It averages out to about three and a half hours of class a day. Scheduling the class times can also be a burden. It took my friend, Chris Carter, who plays baseball for Chapman University, two weeks to plan his class schedule around his job and his training. An athlete cannot have class on Fridays because some games occur on Fridays. Therefore, it makes it even harder to plan. My physical therapist, Jim Hairston, is a teacher at Chapman University and he said that many of his students who play sports have a harder time staying awake because of lack of sleep. These could all attribute to the recent fall in the graduation rate.
Life’s regrets, we all have them. Some ponder on the “what if’s” and wish we could do certain things over again while others take what they might have learned and use it to better themselves in the future. My one wish for a do over would revolved around my high school years and my track and field career. As a young freshman you often do not realize how much potential you have and take a less than serious approach to things knowing that you have another three years in which to improve. This was the case for myself. I made a decision to become a part of the track team and go out for pole-vaulting, after all I had an uncle who held the record at his high school for years and years, I mean - how hard could it be?
Everyday of my life, I've always wanted to get things done at the right time but I didn't because of all the excuses i made. There was one beautiful and hot day, the weather was great for me to attend to my football camp during my off-season. I got out the house ready to go with the things i needed for the camp and i was ready to go to work on the field. I was ready to show my abilities with many of these football athletes and college coaches. The camp i went was Nike Sparq Combine and they're the camp that test athlete abilities. There was several college coaches there looking for best ranked and overrated athletes to be recruit, but I thought that, I'm not going to be one of these athlete they were looking for. Because, I
A lot of people may look at these two sports and think that they have nothing in common with each other besides the obvious fact that it requires a ball in order to play the sport. It is easy to point out many differences, but as I sit and think about it, there are many similarities. Even though they are different games they both have very long regular season. These regular seasons are long and can take a toll on your body. While these sports are the top 5 most popular sports, they both have really large fan bases that go into the millions. Finally, they both require teamwork and chemistry in to become successful, win a championship and be crowned the best of the best in their respective leagues.
I am only the fourth person of many generations of the Green-Belt family to graduate from an institution of higher learning. The other three? My siblings. My mother was the first to attend college, she attended Johnson C. Smith University on a full swimming and diving scholarship. But, did not graduate because the program was cut, and growing up poor there was no money for her to finish school. I followed her foot steps, becoming a student athlete. Athletics paved the way for me. Giving me the opportunity to travel, meet people, and gave me the opportunity to receive my education at an Honors College. The more I grew as a student the better I grew as a leader for my team. I was able to leave behind the negatives that came with growing up in
The occupation I chose was Athletes and Sports Competitors. The sport I want to go into is football. The nature of work is based on practice and the work you put into when you step on the field to play the game. The sport of football is in a way complicated but simple after a while. It is a fun sport to play, but to play in the NFL you need to have a lot of talent. The typical work setting is a sports arena. For example the New York Giants play in in MetLife stadium. Educational wise they need to know the English language, administration and management, psychology, communications and media, and lastly therapy and counseling. The employment of athletes and the sports competitors is expected to grow at least six percent from 2014 to 2024. And
“Batter up in the 6th inning bases loaded 1 out.” The batter is name Justuce Haywood, and he has had a pretty good season so far. “It is a 1-1 count and here comes the pitch, AND THAT THING IS HIT REALLY GOOD DOWN THE LEFT FIELD LINE, HERE COMES ONE RUN IN, AND THERE IS THE SECOND, HAYWOOD ROUNDING 2ND AND THE LEFT FIELDER STILL HAS NOT GOTTEN THE BALL, THE THIRD RUN IS IN AND THEY ARE WAVING HAYWOOD HOME AND HE IS RUNNING AND HE SLIDES AND HE IS IN THERE, A GRAND SLAM HAS BEEN HIT.” That was the first grand slam in buena park little league history. Hi im Justuce and i’m going to tell you my story. Latter that game my best friend Justin Potapia hit one too when I was on second. So in my early years I played T ball then I went to little league
After further reflection on my interview with Heather McDaniel Cleary, I will need to find some way to insert some rudimentary business classes into my academic plan. Inspired by my High School coaches husband I intend to complete a coaching certification over the summer so that I might become a part time or assistant coach on a middle school or high school team. In taking this first step I will also obtain CPR and First Aid certifications. Eventually, I will obtain a driver’s license. I would like to be a personal trainer for fellow athletes, perhaps seeking a position at the Falcon Center’s Fitness Center as a running coach during the summer and my off
