I believe Civic Leadership is the right and beneficial course for my peers and myself to take next year before leaving Middletown North. For us young, dumb, broke, high school teenagers, it is important for us to have leadership and take pride in everything we do in our everyday lives. It is important to take advantage of the opportunity of this course to develop leadership skills as well as skills necessary to succeed in future endeavors. I think I am a good fit to work collaboratively with the school, community, and the entire student body. My responsibility and dedication play a tremendous role in the student I am, as I am hoping it will in the civic leadership program.

Throughout the years of being a student at Council Rock, I have come to the realization of what a true leader is. A leader is not someone that just plans events, collects money, or shows up to meetings. Rather, this is someone that has a true connection with their peers, and has unmatched passion for what they do. With this, I can confidently say that since seventh grade, as a young adult, I have been shaped into an individual that fits these traits. Since that time, I have been involved in student government,
I believe Clark Atlanta University will prepare me for future leadership by creating and building new traits within me. I want the opportunity to prove that I can become someone significant, even with the guidance of my peers. By attending Clark Atlanta University, I will be able to learn the skills that a leader should possess, whether within my classes or within my community. During my junior year of high school I was involved in the “B.E.E. Club” which is a mentorship for young ladies that helps support freshman female students to achieve their goals. I was also actively involved in the “Fashion and Design Club” which advocates personal development through leadership, social etiquette, and corporate skill to build confidence, and poise.
It is one thing to have the knowledge of “the practice of mobilizing people to tackle tough challenges and thrive”. What I am persistent to do with that knowledge is what is important. My biggest take away is that I need to get on the balcony. By being on the balcony I can see that is it really the bold guy with the dance moves who starts the party, not the DJ. Silly to me that I never realized that is where I needed to be, that is where people could find me in a real life party. A year from now I hope that is still where I will be, looking for new data and learning more about myself in new circumstances. There will always be more to learn, although every once in a while I will have to intervene in situations that will make me uncomfortable. To carry on improving on the skills I picked up during the course of this class, it will be crucial for me to reevaluate the goals I set for myself. I plan to reset them all and provide myself with a timeline to achieve the goals. KU offers a minor in leadership studies and this classes is the foundation for all of those leadership classes to come. This class will be impossible to forget as I move forward in complete my minor. I believe to be a successful leader it is important to not just focus on one particular style, but to incorporate many. If you take a few high points from each style and learn to mesh them together you should have a better understanding of leadership as a whole. This class has taught me that being a leader is a lot more challenging than people may think. Leaders have to wear many different hats in many different situations. To become an effective leader you have to work at it. It may come easy to some, but to others it is a skill that is shaped and molded over time. Different experiences and situations help mold leaders into who they become. I hope to use the different styles we have learned about to mold me into an effective leader in today’s society.
Ways that I would recognize staff members is by organizing events such as Teacher Appreciation Day or by reaching out with social media. By organizing Teacher Appreciation Day, the staff members of Cal High would be rewarded with awards that represent the appreciation the student body has towards them and for all the work that they have done. Students could make cards or posters throughout their classrooms and could have their peers sign them by writing thank you notes or expressions of appreciation. Students that highly value their teachers could also recognize them by rewarding them with class parties or small gatherings that are dedicated to appreciating
Leadership is being able to direct or guide other people by either your own actions or by actually guiding them into the right direction (Acumen). Inspiration to be a leader might come from many different areas like your family, friends, peers, or even teachers. My inspiration didn’t really occur to me until I started attending college in August 2013. In all actuality I never even thought of how to be a leader until I was in Mrs. Moore’s Perspectives class. I now have a desire to be a great leader, and the inspiration has come from Mrs. Moore, and my family. I am the first to attend college out of my family, so in a away I have already started leading my siblings in the right direction. Being a leader means inspiring others to pursue their dreams, and aspirations and helping throughout the journey to success. Being a leader has nothing with authority or being able to tell other what, and how to do things, it’s about having people who look up to you and want to follow your example.

Hambrick, Jr is an accomplished leader that embodies the values, attributes, and competencies that I aspire to convey to my subordinates. Leadership is defined as a process by which an individual influences others to obtain goals. There are three aspects that should be addressed when explaining leadership. One aspect is that leadership is a social influence process; leadership could not exist without a leader and one or more followers. Another leadership aspect is compliance; all of the leader’s directions must be complied with voluntarily. Compliance is what separates leadership from other influence-based formal authority. Finally, leadership results in the followers’ behavior, that is purposeful and goal-directed which must be in some organized setting (Leadership Theories and Studies, 2009).
Many organization have structures level of leadership. The person in leadership transforms the employees by inspiring them to follow the vision set by the organization. How do great leaders do this? By the use of power and authority. Leaders influence other with use of power. Authority gives the leader the right exert this power. Both leadership and authority is linked to power but in order to operate effectively; the use of power must be understood.
Leadership is defined as the effective act of persuading followers to pursue shared or at least joint purposes that represents the values and motivations of leaders, followers and the organization as a whole. The root of leadership is the sheer concern for the needs and goals of followers. McMillan and Gilley and (2009) argued that addressing the real needs of followers is one of many requirements to display moral leadership. Moral leaders do not abuse the use of others to achieve their personal goals, but work toward the continuing profit and development of their followers. True moral leaders having sincere concern about the true well-being of their followers would be seen as both influential and inspiring by others. However, moral leadership by itself might not end in enhanced power unless addressing the real needs of followers takes the form of transformational leadership behaviors. Moreover, since moral leadership presumes a considerate approach to the real needs of others, the extent to which a leader’s perception and others’ perceptions match would affect the impact of moral leadership on power. Self-other agreement, regarding transformational and transactional leadership, should therefore be worth exploring. This reflection on leadership types and roles looks at the influence of moral leadership on leader’s power, how self-other agreement regarding transformational leadership affects that relationship as well as how demographic factors such as gender, race and religion can play a role in the influence one can pertain as a moral and just leader. A community leader expands their collective experience, skills and energy to drive positive social change and enable their communities to thrive. Throughout elementary school and high school, I engaged in school clubs and special classes, volunteered in my community, took on leading roles for fundraising and acquired many jobs. I have become a leader in my community because of references from jobs or activities, connections with other leaders and by achieving high academic grades and excelling in sports, I have chosen to share my abilities with others and proceed to make a change.
When it comes to organizations that meet the criteria of promoting community change, there are many around. The two organizations that will be the main focus will be Community Advocates and The Center for Community Change. These two organizations try to come into communities and make sure that the basic needs of the community members are being met, and if they are not, they do anything in their power to make sure that this changes. These groups try to better the communities around them mainly to ensure the health, safety, and other needs that these communities may have troubles keeping up. Without organizations like The Center for Community Change and Community Advocates, there would not be as many successful changes and benefits brought into these communities in need.
