The book City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau is a fantastic book to read. The book takes place in a city called Ember. It is a small city powered by a generator, which was broken. The city was also running out of things people need. When the people of the city are twelve years old, they pick jobs from a bag, which determines their job. Lina and Doon, the main characters, pick the jobs pipeworks laborer and messenger but switch. One day, while Lina was at home, she found an old box and her little sister Poppy chewing on a piece of paper that was in the box. She seen on the top of the paper it said “Instructions”. Lina showed the instructions to Doon and together they figured out that the document was instructions to a way out of Ember. Together, they went on many adventures to find the new city. There was a movie later made of the book. The book and the movie are extremely different but similar at the same time. The City of Ember book and the movie have many similarities. The movie has the same basic storyline of the book. It shows Doon and Lina switching jobs and Lizzie sneaking food. The movie shows granny dying and Mrs. Murdo taking Lina and Poppy under her roof. Important parts of the book were skipped in the movie. Lina showing Captain Fleery and Lizzie the instructions and Lina losing Poppy was skipped. Lina did not get caught by the guards and escape during a blackout in the movie. Doon and Lina did not find the candles and matches. There was some things that were added. There were big animals in the movie and an answering machine. Lina and Doon’s fathers were trying to plan an escape out of Ember together. Lina’s father died, but in the movie he died because he was trying to escape Ember. When Lina and Doon were escaping Ember, they had help, but in the book they did not.
