The City of Ember originated as a fantasy book that follows Lina and Doon as they have the adventure of a lifetime. The book, originally published in 2003, continued to rise in popularity. Eventually, The City of Ember became a movie in 2008. The book and the movie have significant similarities and differences. Accordingly, the similarities link the book and the movie together. In comparison, the book and the movie have the same, overall plot. The antagonist is the mayor, who selfishly hoards luxuries for himself. The main problem is the same. The builders that created Ember originally planned for it to last for 200 years. But, the secret way to escape got lost in time. Rather than having a simple story that would be enjoyable to read, the directors of the movie tried to enhance The City of Ember. The first focus is the backstory. The backstory of the book was that a group of builders constructed the city, but the movie is more realistic and explains that a whole team of scientists and engineers constructed the city. Also, the movie explained what happened to Lina’s family and introduced a new friendship between Lina’s dad and Doon’s dad. However, the movie lacked some details like Lina’s passion for drawing and Looper’s profit from the stolen goods he found in the store rooms. Instead, there were sudden plot twists, like the Pipeworks disaster, that changed the overall plot arrangement. There were also a lot of props that were used to express different moods. The only new character introduced in the movie was Sul, Doon’s boss. Along with Doon’s dad, Sul motivated Doon. Thus, there are not many differences between the book and the movie interpretations of The City of Ember.
