Cindy Sherman was born January 19, 1954, in New Jersey. In 1977, Cindy began working on "Complete Untitled Film Stills," a series of 69 photographs. Cindy is known for her black and white photographs challenged cultural stereotypes (Heller). Sherman used color film and large prints, and focused more on lighting and facial expression. Cindy returned to ironic commentary in the early 1990s, directing the dark comedy “Office Killer” in 1997 (Sherman). Three years later, in 2000, she released a series of photographs of women with exaggerated attributes. It was a representation of social role-playing and sexual stereotypes (Thames and Hudson). Cindy Sherman is a very self-involved, love playing dress up, and playing with makeup (Schjeldahl). Cindy Sherman attended Buffalo State in New York, where she
By the late 70’s, early 80’s, Sherman began establishing a name for herself in not only the art world, but the fashion world as well. Designers such as Dianne Benson hired Cindy Sherman to create a series of advertisements for her store (Schjeldahl), improving Sherman’s photo shoots with extravagant articles of clothing. Despite mainstream success, Sherman’s photographs were far from what one would expect to see in magazines such as Vogue. In fact, her characters were often disgusting or dirty looking women. Sherman's on Page 5 shows a shaggy blonde woman lying in the bed, the power of this image led many viewers to assume the worse, naming it “The Black Sheets.” The look on the young woman's face had prompted viewers to believe that, covered in black and sweating was referring to the woman as being hurt or raped. While it certainly seems like a reasonable explanation, Sherman had a different idea, believing the girl to be extremely tired and coming in from a night out, only to be woken up too early from her pathetic hour or sleep

“Frederick’s of Hollywood, brainchild of the inventor of the push-up bra and purveyor of “marry-a-millionaire” lingerie since 1947” (Blakemore, 2015). Frederick’s created the “sex sells” image for themselves especially marrying a millionaire. They cannot go back from this and just try to reinvent themselves to cater to the everyday women when the company was built from these products. Frederick’s of Hollywood’s catalogs have most of the women in bed in the most uncomfortable position in the most uncomfortable looking lingerie. Victoria’s Secret catalogs are on a beachy location or just on location, not just a set. “That is, demureness is sexy in a middle-class setting and directness is sexy in a working-class setting.” (Blakemore, 2015). The catalogs create the ambiance of where the girls are when they are wearing the lingerie, therefore, it makes us the people shopping from these catalogs feel like we need to be in that place or atmosphere to wear what they are
Paris Miles first started photography his junior year of high school, when he purchased his first camera. Paris always loved art, culture history and telling stories; he wanted to capture the world creatively and he decided he was going to do that through photography. So I attempted to use this mentality whilst exploring the Highline, allowed the mindset to fill me with energy and then reflected on what I liked and didn’t like about the limitless attitude once I walked back towards Gansevoort Street. When I saw Kathryn Andrews’ “Sunbathers II” piece, I went inside the piece, and smiled while my cousin took a photo of me. I then continued to roamed through Chelsea while observing the people, billboards, paintings and the skyline, and was struck by the Sleepwalker sculpture. When Zadie Smith comes face-to-face with Corona’s “Find Your Beach” advertisement, she begins to analyze and find possible interpretations of the billboard sign. I then began to examine the Sleepwalker sculpture and discussed several potential inferences towards Manhattan the artwork might have with my cousin Michelle. I then got some stracciatella gelato, and Michelle got a coffee. With my recent purchases in hand, I was taken surprise by Andrews’ “Sunbathers I”. Michelle and I laughed
Art could be displayed in many different forms; through photography, zines, poetry, or even a scrapbook. There are many inspirational women artists throughout history, including famous women artists such Artemisia Gentileschi and Georgia O’Keeffe. When searching for famous female artists that stood out to me, I found Frida Kahlo, and Barbara Kruger. Two very contrasting type of artists, though both extremely artistic. Both of these artists are known to be feminists, and displayed their issues through painting and photography. Frida Kahlo and Barbara Kruger’s social and historical significance will be discussed.
After moving to Rochester, NY in 1845, the Anthony family became very active in the anti-slavery movement.
Such literal divides like this were enough for Davis to prove her stand against racial injustice. When the The Black Liberation Movement was active between the 1960s and 1970s, Davis took part in strong support of her African American people, particularly in prison systems. The Black Power movement was a powerful, action based assertion of racial pride, and self-definition where multiple Afro-American Terrorist groups stood together to fight racism. Interpreted differently both outside and within African-American communities, Black Power was a well reasoned advancement of civil rights. Davis already having a name for herself, being a close associate of the Black Panthers and Student Nonviolence Coordinating Committee. Davis had become a strong defendant of three prison inmates of Soledad Prison referred to as the Soledad brothers. The three men, John W.
Ella Blake was born on May 4th, 2004 ( also known as Star Wars Day, May the Forth be with you.) in Rensselaer, Indiana. She first realized she had a gift for music when her sister, Ruby Blake, was in 6th grade and joined band. Ruby joined band and started playing the clarinet. Ella was only 7 or 8 at the time due to her sister being 4 years older, but Ruby introduced Ella to the instrumental world. She would ask Ella's opinion on how she was doing on a song and Ella would have to listen to her sister play and try to find sounds she didn't think we're supposed to be there. Around 3 years later Ruby entered high school and quit band, instead of doing marching band, but Ella's Older brother joined band that year. He plays
Although Susan B. Anthony was a woman who sought to reform many ideas in America, the two most significant changes that she brought about were to help end slavery, and to secure women’s right to vote. Anthony was brought up in a Quaker family committed to social equality, and her family regularly invited other Quakers who were sympathetic to the anti-slavery movement to meet at their farm. In 1856, Anthony began working as an representative for the American Anti-Slavery Society where she was oftentimes met by hostile mobs, and armed threats. In 1863, Anthony and Stanton, whom she had met during a temperance rally, founded the Women's Loyal National League, conducting the largest petition drive in the nation's history, to campaign for the

People are influenced by everything from jobs, music, fashion, certain people, even to different cultures. Chefs never seemed like the group of people one would expect to have an impact on the world, but they do. They change the way people see food and show that it is far more than just a way to stay alive it is sort of like a new way of life to say. There was one woman who changed the scene entirely, by graduating from the Parisian cooking school Le Cordon Bleu, publishing 19 books, airing 13 television shows, and having 8 DVD releases. Julia Child has been an inspiration for many cooks but has also influenced society as a whole while changing the way people thought about food and at the same time, revolutionizing the professional cooking industry for women.
