The topic I decided to choose to conduct my Capstone Research on is Copyright in Choreographic Works. Choreography is “Choreographers use dance performances to express ideas and stories. There are many types of dance, such as ballet, tango, modern dance, tap, and jazz (bls.gov). Choreography is also something that should be made from the heart, it’s not something that should be taken from someone else because at that point, it wouldn’t be considered your choreography and it wouldn’t be something you made from your own mind and creativity. Dancing is something you have a passion for and you show your emotions through your movements, so there shouldn’t be a need to copy. The problem now is, many choreographers are starting to steal choreography
Her statement included that “Choreography should be subject to copyright; choreography should be named as a separate category of copyrightable matter; and the term “choreographic works” should include dramatic concert pieces, lyric-dramatic concert pieces, satirical concert pieces, and dance in operas, musical comedies, and revues.” ( Hall, 2017). She also added that she hope that choreographic works can become a category in the Copyright Law, instead of it being under dramatic works. Since some choreographies don’t qualify under dramatic works, then the solution would be to add a choreographic works category in the Copyright Law, so everyone could get a fair chance. If you worked really hard on choreography, you should be able to receive credit for it. Even a simple dance you should be able to receive credit. One example, Michael Jackson and the moonwalk. I absolutely enjoy Michael Jackson’s music and he was known for his legendary moonwalk, but he certainly did not invent it. He became so popular for it, but little did everyone know, he did not create it. A man by the name of Bill Bailey created the moonwalk, which was known as the backslide back then. He did not become as popular as Michael Jackson did, but that’s who originally started the dance. That is where a problem is created. There was also an incident where Beyonce has stole choreography for one out of many popular videos that she’d done. Beyonce tried to defend herself and she said that she used Keersmaeker's choreography as an inspiration to her “Countdown” video. The choreography was stolen from Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and she wasn’t impressed. Keersmaeker stated “ taking choreography out of context robbed it of it’s original power” (The Plagiarism Problem,2012). This controversy shows how so-called Choreographers steal others ideas and make it their own.
Theater, in our culture, have grown rapidly over the years that it has been occupied. In 17th and 18th centuries, dances were written as record. As our cultural evolved, in 19th and 20th century, dancing became a dance notation. Each era has a different type of dance that related to that period of time. In able for dancers to be organized and taught the moves, they needed some type of teacher, which in our modern we call them a choreographer. A choreographer have the role to design dances, which can also refer to the design itself. A choreographer is one who designs dances, which can also be called dance composition. Dance is an ever evolving form of art; in much the same way that one can categorize and differentiate between eras and styles of architecture one can also do so with dance. These eras at times have sharp delineations separating them from their antecedents, other times the distinction is far more subtle. Traditional forms of dance were challenged by choreographers attempting to expand the breadth and increase the depth of performance; preeminent among such visionaries was Seattle born dancer and choreographer Mark Morris. Mark Morris' began as one of the millions of hopeful individuals attempting to simply make a career in dance; he not only succeeded but managed to have a lasting effect on the entire landscape of dance.
Trisha Brown is considered to be one of the most pivotal choreographers of the 1960’s as her work and practice shifted away from historically considered “appropriate” movement for choreography. This ideology references the modern era of choreographers, moving away from the aesthetics of Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham who worked with codified techniques, virtuosity and expressionism, whereas Brown saw dance as being of greater importance to the physical and mental process of the performer. Born in Aberdeen, Washington and studying dance at Mills College in California, Brown took improvisational workshops with Anna Halprin, discovering the concept of task orientated work. This knowledge would become central to her later experiments and work. She then shifted her life to New York to study composition with Robert Dunn to further her knowledge of movement and choreography. Physical research that was undertaken in these classes became publically presented programs, eventually leading to the evolvement of Judson Dance Theatre. In the late 1960’s, Brown constructed experiments to play with the dynamics and stability of gravity, using props such as ropes and harnesses to extend the dancers past their physical limitations. These experiments went on to become a working method for the work she created throughout her career and with her company which she founded in the 1970’s.
Throughout the years, America has pursued the performing arts in a large variety of ways. Theatre plays a dramatic and major role in the arts of our society today, and it takes great effort in all aspects. Musical Theatre, specifically, involves a concentration and strength in dance, acting, and singing. This is the base that Musical Theatre is built upon. For my Senior Project, I helped choreograph multiple scenes in a community musical “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. Choreography is a way of expressing oneself, but it has not always been thought of for that purpose. Agnes de Mille’s expressive talent has drastically affected how people see choreography today. Agnes de Mille’s influence in the world of dance has left a lasting impact in the Performing Arts Department, and her revolutionary works are still known today for their wit, lyricism, emotion, and charm.

Similar to Cage, his life partner, produced very radical innovations, which included the relationship of dance and music. They both concluded that they both dance and music should be created independently (Merce Cunningham Trust). They both produced works that relied on chance rather than choice. The composition of Cunningham’s dances disregarded the conventional means of their structure, such as a cause and effect type of situation. The subject of his dances seemed to be the dance itself, rather than any subjective storytelling within them. Having more emphasis on freedom, Cunningham’s dances were free-flowing and expressive. However, he overcame the struggle of maintaining a balance between purposeful actions and meaninglessness. On September 2nd, I experienced one of the most enjoyable folk dances, known as contra dance, at the First Baptist Church. Due to my cultural and religious background, this experience was new to me and full of mystery. However, it led me to wonder how social music, especially contra dance, is powerful enough letting strangers dance and communicate with each other in a perfect harmony.
People have dreams of what they want to do or accomplish in life, but usually musical theatre is just pushed into the non-realistic void. It isn’t a dream for me. In the past four years, musical theatre has been clarified as my reality. Musical theatre has been the only thing I have seen myself wanting to do. One of the biggest issues that arises with remix art is the issue of ‘Remix vs. Plagiarism.” When does a remixed work become an original work of art? Is the work considered original as soon as it is tweaked or when it is unrecognizable? Neither, a work is unique when its purpose and meaning transcends that of the original? Works like Montgomery Lee’s “Copyright Symphony” takes a variety of images and uses them to create music out of the imbedded data on the photographs. The work can be considered his own because he had given the images new meaning by placing them together. And by turning the photos into music they are no longer photographs, instead they are musical instruments which together create something completely original.

Animation is “the art of bringing to life” in other words it is a simulation of movement by displaying a series of pictures or frames. The earliest animation started even before the Stone Age. Stone Age artists used a lot of cartoon like techniques to show motion in the form of cave paintings, where the head or tail was drawn to show movement. These paintings are mostly found in Lascaux cave. Bone disc is another form of Thaumatrope that showed motion. The most convincing case is that of a Magdalenian bone disc where on one side the horse is drawn standing and on the other side the horse is drawn sitting, when the disc is turned a peculiar motion is seen. One of the greatest examples to show motion and to show that animation started during the Stone Age is that of an earthen bowl that was excavated in Iran’s burnt city. The bowl depicts a deer hopping and going towards a tree and eating the leaves.
On the night of the DancePlus performance, I saw numerous little performances. There were six of them in total and the one I had most reactions and favors to is the last one of the first half, which is called Swampin. It was choreographed by John Evans with additional material by Oluwadamilare Ayoride, Jennifer Payan and surprisingly, the dancers. Usually what I would expect from a piece of dance performance is choreographers dominating the process of being creative on the grounds o f coming up dance moves. However, this time, it is nice to see how the dancer actually participating first hand in the creating process of the whole performance which would definitely benefit the quality of the dance, since the dancers would their own choreography
Plagiarism is a very serious subject to talk about. It doesn’t sound like it is that big of a deal but very serious things can come out of it. Students could lose scholarships and get kicked out of school for something as simple as copying someone else’s work. Students should learn the rules and regulations of the school ,that they are attending, about plagiarism.[1] That’s basically what plagiarism is; copying someone else’s work.
