Censorship in general has been an intensely debated issue because it is considered an infringement to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution while others argue it is used to conceal inappropriate things (Aliprandini and Sprague). The banning of books in school curriculum has also been debated since parents see certain books as inappropriate while others argue that banning them hinders student learning. Against the censorship of books in schools, Fenice Boyd and Nancy Bailey, authors of Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, believe that banning books creates a barrier between students and intellectual development (Boyd and Bailey, 655). Banning books from schools and removing them from the curriculum prevents students from exploring different ideas and developing creativity and critical thinking skills.

Advertisers are finding that marketing to kids makes a lot of money, the youth believe everything they hear, and the advertising techniques they do today are almost sure to work.
Children are the easiest audience to target and it should be illegal to aim advertisements at them. Did you know that 26% of advertisements aimed at children are for breakfast cereals? Cereal is one of the most common breakfast foods that children eat; Trix cereal is one example of many sugary cereals that children consume every single day. The advertisements use different marketing techniques to target children to purchase the cereal. They use characters, celebrity endorsements, online games and quotes to make it seem exclusive. A sugary cereal such as this one is one small portion of a large problem – childhood obesity.
One reason for this is because kids are easily influenced, and advertisers see it as a way to establish brand loyalty at an early age. I remember as a kid seeing really cool Coca-Cola advertisements. For some reason, I don’t remember Pepsi ads, so I always preferred Coke over Pepsi. This is good for the advertisers, because once a kid is loyal to a specific brand, they will most likely stick with that brand for their entire lives. For the kids, however, it’s not always a good thing. Exposure to so many advertisements can’t be good for them. In some cases, like the image of women in advertisements, it will change a person’s impression of certain things.
I know it can be hard but try to remember when we were kids how much we all loved to wake up early on Saturday morning, sneak to the T.V., and watch our favorite cartoons. We loved to do this not only so that we could see our favorite characters go through troublesome dilemmas each episode, but also that we could see what was new on the market and try to convince our parents to spare a few dollars and buy it. This tactic has been used from years upon years and will likely continue occurring for the simple reason that it works. Businessmen in the marketing know that kids will see the latest and greatest thing and insist to their parent that they must have it. And with a little persistence and maybe a temper tantrum or two, they usually get it. Sometime commercials will appeal to not only the child, but also to parents because they can see the new toys that they are able to buy for their kids. Because there is always a constant demand for new toys, there will always be a entrepreneur trying to make money by creating a product, and market it in the way of commercialization. It is a never ending cycle which will always occur as long as there is T.V. because it is how they make their money.

I certainly agree with the author that children are very vulnerable to this profitable and giant market, and that we as society should protect our children. Although I do not have children in my own, I have experience several aspects of the way television advertising easily influence in children. For example, I have seen children go to the mall or supermarket and get excited when they see products from television ads. This article gives me something to think about: how our children and the rest of the population gets influence by the advertising market which in turn is what shapes our society.

These children, targeted by advertisers, are so vulnerable to trickery, are so mentally and emotionally unable to understand reality because they lack the cognitive reasoning skills needed to be skeptical of advertisements. Children spend thousands of hours captivated by various advertising tactics and do not understand their subtleties.
Imagine finding out that a child killed your loved one. What would you do? Wouldn't you want justice to be severe, but instead you find out that the child was not prosecuted. The findings in Dittman’s article fully support my findings as well as my own personal. beliefs that advertising to children is unethical because a lot of the children watching the TV are doing so without adult supervision. A lot of children watching TV are 8 or younger and they do not fully comprehend the importance of the subliminal messages that the companies are sending. out by using their cartoons and catchy songs to hook the child into buying their products. I believe that advertising is a modern example of brainwashing and that with no parental supervision or no parental limits, our nation’s youth will be so caught up in the power of advertising, that their youth and innocence will end much faster than the generation before.
