We are living in an era of high advertising in the United States of America. We are being bombed by ads everywhere we go. Ads tell us how to run our lives. They tell us how to dress, eat, drink, how not to feel depressed, how to feel more socially acceptable, and of course, they tell us what are the “best” products to consume. Advertisements are delivered via radio, magazines, billboards, newspapers, television, internet, school, bookstores and many others sources. Advertisements are everywhere, and they all have one simple goal: to sell things or ideas to the people. It is not surprising that advertising consumes all facets of the media and affects everyone young and old. It is nearly impossible to go anywhere today without seeing some sort of ad that wants to get our attention. In this paper, however, I do not intend to explore the ways the advertisement industry targets the whole population. Instead, the scope of this paper is to critically analyze the article “Children and Advertising” by Dale Kunkel, where he exposes the advertisement industry. This essay, will analytically discuss how advertising is delivered to children, how children get influenced by the advertising market, and what has been done to control this issue, Lastly, I will mention what the article might be lacking.
The advertising industry, one of the largest and most profitable industries in the world, finds children to be an easy target. Since children are exposed to television at a very early age and they do not have the ability to identify or understand a commercial, they quickly become vulnerable to advertising. The advertising market takes advantage of the ignorance of children by playing with their emotions. According to Kunkel, in 1998, research fo...

...ave been establish to solve the issue even though he misses to include some other possible solutions. After reading and critically analyzing this article, I learn that ads affect directly our children whether the advertising industry’s intentions are intended or unintended. I certainly agree with the author that children are very vulnerable to this profitable and giant market, and that we as society should protect our children. Although I do not have children in my own, I have experience several aspects of the way television advertising easily influence in children. For example, I have seen children go to the mall or supermarket and get excited when they see products from television ads. This article gives me something to think about: how our children and the rest of the population gets influence by the advertising market which in turn is what shapes our society.
It contains dissatisfaction that leads to over-consumption. Children are particularly vulnerable to this sort of manipulation, and the American Psychological Association article, “Youth Oriented Advertising” reveals the facts upon the statistics on consumers in the food industry. The relationship that encourages young children to adapt towards food marketing schemes, makes them more vulnerable to other schemes, such as, advertising towards clothing, toys and cars. Article writer of “The relationship between cartoon trade character recognition and attitude toward product category in young children”, Richard Mizerski, discusses a sample that was given to children ages three to six years old, about how advertising affects young children that are attracted to certain objects or products on the market. During this past decade, advertising companies have gone out of their way just to get the new scoop or trend children are into, gathering information and distributing it to other companies.
Many companies spend over millions of dollars advertising every year, and these advertisements influence how an individual thinks and acts in a society. It becomes a significant aspect of our lives whether it has come to our acknowledgment or not. It influences us to the extent we believe the information presented in the media are “normal”. To be precise, advertisements create and define the social norms. These concepts are strongly built into my mind since a young age, especially the gender roles between men and women.
The land of the free, brave and consumerism is what the United States has become today. The marketing industry is exploiting children through advertisement, which is ridiculously unfair to children. We are around advertisement and marketing where ever we go; at times, we don't even notice that we are being targeted to spend our money. As a matter of fact, we live to buy; we need and want things constantly, and it will never stop. The film, Consuming Kids , written by Adriana Barbaro and directed by Jeremy Earp, highlights children as this powerful demographic, with billions of dollars in buying power, but the lack of understanding of marketers’ aggressive strategies. Children are easily influenced and taken advantage of, which is why commercialization of children needs to stop. Commercialization to children leads to problems that parents do not even know are happening such as social, future, and rewired childhood problems. Government regulations need to put a stop to corporations that live, breathe and sell the idea of consumerism to children and instead show that genuine relationships and values are what are important.
Commercials make the viewer think about the product being advertised. Because of the amount of television children watch throughout the week, it allows the children to be exposed to the information over and over again. Per year, children are known to view thousands of fast food commercials. On a daily basis, a teen will usually view five advertisements and a child aged six to eleven will see around four advertisements (Burger Battles 4). Businesses use this strategy to “speak directly to children” (Ruskin 3). Although the big businesses in the fast ...
Corporations cause grave concern through aggressive marketing ads because they hope to inflict “nostalgic childhood memories of a brand that will lead to a lifetime of purchases because companies now plan ‘cradle-to-grave’ advertising strategies” (43). Children, before they have a sense of identity, are already being manipulated into believing that status and self worth are associated with materialistic ideas or wealth. This advertising is applied to all aspects of life, not just junk food consumption. Companies and corporations have been targeting children because of their vulnerability, causing “the FTC’s proposed ban, which was supported by American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Congress of Parents and Teachers, and the Child Welfare League” (46). This ban against advertising is necessary for the future health of America, but was attacked and rejected by vicious businesses, who are preoccupied with their monetary gains. A professional organization composed of pediatric medical doctors, who spend their lives improving the health and wellbeing of children, support the television ad ban on children. Therefore, it is unquestionable how wrong it is for these enormous corporations to exploit the naivety of
Jean Kilbourne is passionate about an array of topics when it comes to advertising, but her message is clear: we cannot escape advertisements and they are influencing our minds. Socialization and the Power of Advertising illustrates this using children and consumerism. Killing Us Softly 4’s main example is women. Either way, advertisements are negatively impacting us and, as Kilbourne points out, it’s getting worse. Whatever the solution is, we have to put an end to the experience of being immersed in an advertising
it is to make them want something, or to get their parents to buy it
The advertising is a method of communication that has a big purpose which is to persuade the audience to buy their products .Today, advertising is very remarkable and has an essential role in community.as it tends to impact on children specially. In addition, nowadays, the children are watching too much television and use the social media than previous years. Therefore, they see more advertising. Besides, although there are some good impacts of advertising on young minds, the researchers shown that, the advertising can also have several bad influences on children, particularly, if parents are incautious and do not increase the awareness of their children about the importance of money.

Across America in homes, schools, and businesses, sits advertisers' mass marketing tool, the television, usurping freedoms from children and their parents and changing American culture. Virtually an entire nation has surrendered itself wholesale to a medium for selling. Advertisers, within the constraints of the law, use their thirty-second commercials to target America's youth to be the decision-makers, convincing their parents to buy the advertised toys, foods, drinks, clothes, and other products. Inherent in this targeting, especially of the very young, are the advertisers; fostering the youth's loyalty to brands, creating among the children a loss of individuality and self-sufficiency, denying them the ability to explore and create but instead often encouraging poor health habits. The children demanding advertiser's products are influencing economic hardships in many families today. These children, targeted by advertisers, are so vulnerable to trickery, are so mentally and emotionally unable to understand reality because they lack the cognitive reasoning skills needed to be skeptical of advertisements. Children spend thousands of hours captivated by various advertising tactics and do not understand their subtleties.

I believe advertisments are a good thing for children. First off, advertisments are everywhere and they arent going to go away. Secondly, advertisments teach children how to be a smart consumer. Thirdly, its a good thing they make advertisments for children because thats what keeps businesses running. These are three reasons why i believe advertisments are a good thing, especially for children.
