Introduction: (350 words)

The child protective system in NSW involves collaborating with various government agencies in the aim to protect children who are being neglected, abused and put in harm’s way incorporating the Children and Young Person (Care and Protection) Act 1998 which states that the health and wellbeing of children and youth in communities should be a shared responsibility by families, government and the various agencies working together. (Wyver, 2001)

There is no scientific explanation as to why children are abused or neglected however according to Widom et.al (2014) a combination of risk factors of why child abuse and neglet occurs within these families is due to being are under pressure and lacking a support system. Risk factors such as poverty, the absence of education, marital concerns, inconsistency of living arrangements, violent home life, lack of support from extended family, isolation, unemployment and insufficient accommodation are all prevalent in cases of child abuse.
