When researching the different styles of leadership, one must fully understand what leadership is first. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, leadership is defined as the “capacity to lead” (Leadership). This is true for many types of workers but especially crucial for the healthcare profession. The leader of the healthcare team such as the charge nurse, management, or supervisor, plays a vital role in how the healthcare team performs care and ultimately affects patient satisfaction. As a healthcare team, it is imperative that there is an exceptional leader in place for the team to be successful. This type of leader awakens his or her follower’s energy and commitment influencing their emotions. Often these types of leaders offer a positive result in a crisis as well as changes (Boerner & Dutschke, 2008). When thinking of a charismatic leader, one may think of a presidential candidate. To gain votes from various groups of people, the leader must have a charismatic behavior. A study that was conducted in 2013 focused on how people voted based on their admiration for the various presidential candidates in 2008. Throughout this study, they obtained 126 undergraduate students and evaluated the effects of the charismatic leader before and after the presidential race. This study found that charismatic leaders often provoke certain emotions on the followers; therefore, the followers work on behalf of their leader (Michel, Wallace, & Rawlings, 2013). It also found that this type of leadership may be rejected if the followers do not wish to have change happen (Michel, Wallace, & Rawlings, 2013). In the nursing profession, this could be seen if a manager or supervisor possessed the traits of charismatic leaders, and if the followers desired the change, the result would be outstanding. This type of leader is usually a power-oriented person that is close-minded leader (Giltinnane, 2013). While in lecture, Dr. Hamm discussed a good example of this type of leader. He stated that if there were a problem and the nurse brought it up to this type of leader, they would rarely listen to it. They would simply say “if you don’t like it then there is the door.” This type of leader is usually disliked until positive aspects of the leader comes to light. In this book, the authors Tom Rath and Barry Conchie examine the question “What are the keys to being an effective leader?” To answer this question they had a team that reviewed data collected from Gallup polls. The data came from interviews from 20,000 senior leaders, over a million teams and more than fifty years of Gallup Polls of the most admired leaders in the world. The authors then had the team do a study of more than 10,000 followers to find out why they follow the influential leaders in their life.
To think one style of leadership is the only style seems rather pompous. You have several different types and brands of blood pressure pills to lower the blood pressure depending on the cause, therefore why would we think we only need one type of leader. At times I am needed to make a decision that I do not ask for outside participation. For example the attendance policy. I decided what would be a fair policy, how many points would be assigned for each call off and how long each point would stay active for. The situation did not need a meeting, it did not need input for others. I utilized a laisse fair style when the nurses were complaining about medication pass times. I simply gave them the task to develop a standardized medication time and let me know. When I hold a risk meeting I have several nurses and other disciplines present to assist at problem solving risk behaviors and that also means trying new techniques. Every situation is different and it is my responsibility, as the leader, to know which style would work best in each situation; sometimes it also depends on the people involved. Some staff need a leader to stand back more, others need one to effectively manage them. Sociologist Max Weber defined charismatic leadership as individuals who possess “a gift of grace”. Charismatic leaders have strong visionary qualities and the ability to engage others in action. In this paper I will highlight an example of a specific leadership style that we come across in healthcare settings. Many experts and scholars point out that the current leadership crisis concerns moral and character problems in many leaders (Ahn, Ettner, & Loupin, 2012; Callahan, 2004; Wright & Quick, 2011). The following interview report is intended primarily for exploration and comparison of the traits and characteristics of leadership. A leader of a clinical medicine centre was interviewed for this report. The purpose of this report is to explore the leadership characters and traits, and how they can be developed in this turbulent environment. First, I make a brief introduction regarding the background of the respondent and her working environment. The report also describes this leader's personal and subjective perceptions in relation to a literature review which investigates the traits and characteristics of leadership. The report concludes with a comparison and discussion of the results of the clinical condition on the basis of the interview and literature review. At the same time, the report aims to put forward feasible and effective advice and specific programs for present and future leaders and managers in the health care system.
