“There is a certain enthusiasm in life, that makes human nature rise above itself, in acts of heroism.” says founding father of the United States, Alexander Hamilton. Anyone can be a hero, but that someone has to have had stepped up and done something for the greater good. Also, everyone has the potential to be hero in them, but there are many qualities that heroes all have and are recognized for. Qualities that are necessary to reach the goal of being a hero. And so, just making good choices does not make heros, there is more to heroism. A hero is someone who is persistent during hard times and shows leadership when called out unexpectedly, but is not selfish when asked to put others before themselves. Heros are persistent and enduring to reach their goals and do what is right no matter how hard …show more content…
For example, Ronald Reagan, a former US president, says, “Sometimes the greatest hero is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets people to do the greatest things”. This explains that heroes inspires others to do better and have a someone to look up to, but doesn't necessarily have to be the best at everything. Along with, Odysseus, in the Odyssey, Odysseus, is captured by a cyclops with his men and the cyclopes slowly kills many of his men, but Odysseus with the men he has left, who are scared and lost all hope, forms a plan to save the rest of them and avenge the ones lost. (SB 32) Even though, Odysseus had lost many of his men in the process he ended up saving the majority of his crew. Further, Odysseus had stepped up to, bravely, lead his men right when his men were on the verge of giving up. Heroism is taking risks while making sacrifices and leading others onto the right path, when there seems to be no hope or any other way, like how Ronald Reagan and Odysseus
Who is a hero? In contemporary times, usage of the term has become somewhat of a cliché. Over the years, the term “hero” has become representative of a wide variety of individuals, each possessing differing traits. Some of the answers put forth by my colleagues (during our in-class discussion on heroism) as to whom they consider heroes pointed to celebrities, athletes, teachers and family members. Although the occupations differed, each of their heroes bore qualities that my classmates perceived as extraordinary, whether morally or physically. Nonetheless, Webster’s defines “hero” as “a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities.” Thus, it is worth considering that individuals become heroes relative to the situation with which they’re faced.
What is a hero? A hero can be classified as a number of things. A hero can be a person who in the opinions of others has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Ervin Staub, a holocaust survivor from Hungary and as scholar on altruistic behavior, has written, "Goodness like evil often begins in small steps. Heroes evolve; they aren't born. Very often the rescuers make only a small commitment at the start, to hide someone for a day or two. But once they had taken that step, they begin to see themselves differently, as someone who helps. What starts as mere willingness becomes intense involvement." The business man, Oskar Schindler, demonstrated a powerful example
Heroism entails several things; a selfless act, courage, or the accomplishments of bold and daring expeditions. A hero can also mean courage in the face of death. Others may view this type of hero as stupid, or a martyr. Every hero has faults and these faults along with heroic deeds make the man or woman; a hero, heroine.
Dictionaries’ definitions of the word hero are exceedingly vague. A standard dictionary limits the definition of a hero to, “a man of distinguished courage or ability, admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities” (Dictionary.com). Heroes are people, not just men, who are generous, courageous, and take every event as part of the whole stream of life rather than as a critical moment. Humanity, endurance, and perseverance are other critical characteristics of a deserving candidate for such a title.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, the main figure Odysseus has excessive pride, a lack of faith, and selfish intentions, which prevent him from earning the title of hero. These mannerisms are just several examples of his multiple derogatory traits. They completely overpower the few positive attributes Odysseus possesses. The numerous negative behaviors that he displays are not those of a hero. Being chivalrous, determined, growing, or courageous in any way can make a hero. Helping others is an essential and main part of being a true hero. Even the smallest selfless act can make one a hero in another’s eyes. Heroes are discovered in every way possible, from pop culture to social interaction to the pages of a poem – just not this one.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary a hero is an individual who is admired for great bravery or fine qualities. To me a hero is so much more than a person who shows great bravery. When I think of a hero many fine qualities come to mind; intelligence, courage, altruism, compassion and great bravery.
There are many different perspectives of what a hero is but one opinion that most people would agree on is that a hero is someone who selfless and would sacrifice their own feelings for others. In The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus does not present the qualities of a hero but instead shows how one might lack true heroism. The character traits of being self-centered and unfaithful describe Odysseus as non-heroic. Odysseus must leave home to defend his people in the war for 10 years, but isn’t able to get home until another 10 years later. Throughout his journey, Odysseus selects lousy decisions that ends up making him unheroic such as being unreliable, unsympathetic of someone else’s emotions, and barbaric. This clearly shows that Odysseus is not hero material considering the fact that he is untrustworthy and manipulative.
What I personally believe makes a hero, is a person that is brave and courageous. Courage is one of the biggest characteristics you need to be considered a hero. Heroism is all about how far you’ll go to protect or serve the people and how far you go is all about how much courage and bravery you have to take such quality to the next level.
According to google.com a hero is someone who “is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievments, or noble equalities.” (google.com). For example, superman , superman is an all time american classic modern hero who is admired for his courage and for saving earth multiple times from super villains. Another example of a hero is Beowulf. Beowulf was created around 1000 AD and was known far and wide throughout the lands for his selflessness, bravery, and courage .
A hero always stands up for the weak sheep. A hero is someone very courageous. A hero is always nice, and always puts others first. A hero is a natural leader and has a big heart. A hero is very inspirational and caring. A hero is bold and fearless. A hero is daring and has guts. A hero is anyone, you just have to find it within yourself.
One may talk about the heroes they have today, or even ones that have passed from before. If one looks back even farther, some of the most influential heroes are from Bible times. These are the people that God hand-picked and they put their faith in Him. One of the most memorable and influential heroes is Joseph. He showed many different qualities of a hero like trusting God, strength, integrity, devotion to God and selflessness.
What makes a hero? Heroes are born in the moment. They are born with every decision we make. Heroes are those willing to act when everyone is too petrified to move. A hero is defined as a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.
Heroism is defined as an act of courage and an act of selflessness. They reflect the highest levels of morality in society. Heroes have embodied the morality codes of civilizations throughout the ages. When heroes display courage, observers often identify with that courage. The refusal to take the easy way out and the ability to act in spite of fear, is what makes a person a hero. This is the way everyone wishes to react in the midst of a crisis. As witnessed in literature and real life, mankind needs heroes to provide an inspirational role model, an escape from the mundane, and a guide for morality.
What is a hero? What does it take to be one? A suitable hero is very hard to find these days but it can be somebody you will never expect to be one. A hero to me, is mainly someone who does good, noble deeds and is just genuinely a good person overall. To be one, I think a hero should put others first before themselves and should affect other people around him in a positive way. They should be very brave, considered as leaders, humble, and should not be selfish in anyway as this is what makes them different than others. They should also be kind, caring and have patience with others and themselves.
What is a hero? The Oxford Dictionary defines a hero as “A person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities”, says the Oxford Dictionary. My definition of a hero is a person taking an action in a misfortune of events. A person can believe that some people really are heroes and would risk their life to help others, and also can believe that if a tragic event happened about 80% of people wouldn’t do anything to save others they would just try to save themselves. To be a hero one needs to be courageous and selfless, you need to give to others instead of yourself.
