To Be or Not To Be A Hero

There are many different perspectives of what a hero is but one opinion that most people would agree on is that a hero is someone who selfless and would sacrifice their own feelings for others. In The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus does not present the qualities of a hero but instead shows how one might lack true heroism. The character traits of being self-centered and unfaithful describe Odysseus as non-heroic. Odysseus must leave home to defend his people in the war for 10 years, but isn’t able to get home until another 10 years later. Throughout his journey, Odysseus selects lousy decisions that ends up making him unheroic such as being unreliable, unsympathetic of someone else’s emotions, and barbaric. This clearly shows that Odysseus is not hero material considering the fact that he is untrustworthy and manipulative.
Odysseus makes actions that displays that he is not heroic because he shows how inconsiderate he is of other people’s feelings. As stated on page 669, “I would not heed them in my glorying spirit, but let my anger flare and yelled” (500-501). Odysseus’ outrage reveals the fact that he only follows his own instincts by believing he is right about everything. He decides to yell at the Cyclops and ignores his men’s warnings which resulted in some deaths of his own men. He also shows how stubborn he is by not accepting help from others even if they’re from his own men. As mentioned on page 680, “Odysseus does not tell his men of Circe’s last prophecy--that he will be the only survivor of their long journey.” This suggests that Odysseus doesn’t bother to think about his men to tell him he’s going to be the only survivor. If he was one of the men, he would want to know if he wasn’t going to make it home alive....

In the epic poem, The Odyssey by Homer, the reader learns of unheroic traits such as being self-centered, unfaithful, and lack of sympathy. Readers can come to the conclusion that one theme is to be courageous and to take risks. Odysseus could’ve tried to resist Calypso’s power but instead he admitted defeat and pleasured her anyway. As a result, this epic poem is suggesting that anyone can be a hero as long as they have the ability to care for others more than themselves. The poem’s theme lives today in America because although there are many crimes done every day, some have a heart and leave an act of kindness no matter how small it is. Consequently, heroes should be able to instinctively care for anyone even if it’s just a stranger and to risk their own lives for another in order to make them happy.
