Holocaust Hero: A One of a Kind Man What is a hero? A hero can be classified as a number of things. A hero can be a person who in the opinions of others has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Ervin Staub, a holocaust survivor from Hungary and as scholar on altruistic behavior, has written, "Goodness like evil often begins in small steps. Heroes evolve; they aren't born. Very often the rescuers make only a small commitment at the start, to hide someone for a day or two. But once they had taken that step, they begin to see themselves differently, as someone who helps. What starts as mere willingness becomes intense involvement." The business man, Oskar Schindler, demonstrated a powerful example His bravery still commands a great respect today. His role shows a great significance of speaking up against injustice and choosing not be silent. Eile weasel has quoted “I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” This quote states that when you choose to remain silent when you know that something wrong is going on, you are supporting the evil side. In the Holocaust, people did not stand up against Nazi Germany and actually supported them by being silent simply because they didn't oppose it. Today, 9 million Syrians people have been forced to escape from their homes to find a shelter away from the devastating violence. We need to show the Syrian people that the world still cares about Syria, We need to show our support for the millions of Syrian children, women and men who are living through this horrifying crisis by standing up with
There are many heroic individuals in history that have shown greatness during a time of suffering ,as well as remorse when greatness is needed, but one individual stood out to me above them all. He served as a hero among all he knew and all who knew him. This individual, Simon Wiesenthal, deserves praise for his dedication to his heroic work tracking and prosecuting Nazi war criminals that caused thousands of Jews, Gypsies, Poles and other victims of the Holocaust to suffer and perish.
“I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” (Elie Wiesel)
Webster’s dictionary defines a hero as any man admired for his courage, qualities or exploits, especially in war. Some people attribute the term hero mostly to war. My personal definition of a hero is someone who takes a stand against evil or an unjust cause. The term hero can be applied to anyone, it isn’t necessary to save the world from explosion to be a hero. The act of standing up for a friend can also be called a heroic act.
A hero is defined as "someone admired for his bravery, great deeds or noble qualities". There are three categories to which all heroes can be classified into, one of which is the anti-hero genre.
[War] brings out the worst in people. Never the good, always the bad. Even in the midst the devastation of a national genocide, where one race turned against another in hate, good people existed and worked to counteract the hate through love and compassion. Oskar Schindler was one of these people. World War II provided him the means to become a very wealthy and powerful man, yet he did not exploit the Jews like many other businessmen during his time. He used his money and power to save thousands. Much can be learned from what happened during the holocaust and what Schindler did to save thousands of Jews.
What is a hero? A hero is defined as a brave or noble person, but this definition is not accurate after reading Arnold Geier's book Heroes of the Holocaust. This book deals with the true heroes of one the most repulsive and disgusting times in world history. The compilation of stories in this book are not so much about the survivors who tell the stories, but about the heroes who risked their lives and well being to come to the aid of others so these stories could be told. There are heroes such as Mr. Warszawski who sold his competitor's merchandise so the family could stay alive or Mr. DeJong who searched for days for his missing daughter. There are even the stories of German soldiers, who must not have believed in the atrocities surrounding them, and found ways to feed, clothe, or find better work in a labor camp. And finally there is the story of German SS officer Menke who recalled childhood memories to save a couple and pushed aside an implanted hatred for Jews. Throughout the whole book, the stories would not have been able to be told unless these heroes emerged and because of these heroes, we are reading these stories today.
What is a hero? When we think about a hero; what is the first thing that comes into our mind? To some a hero might be a legendary person or someone of great strength and ability. For example, a solider or someone admired for their amazing achievements. A hero is someone who can be calm during the saddest moments of their lives and someone who can change the world with their amazing courage, which can be seen from Betty Friedan, Steve Jobs and Bharat Bhattarai.
According to google.com a hero is someone who “is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievments, or noble equalities.” (google.com). For example, superman , superman is an all time american classic modern hero who is admired for his courage and for saving earth multiple times from super villains. Another example of a hero is Beowulf. Beowulf was created around 1000 AD and was known far and wide throughout the lands for his selflessness, bravery, and courage .
What is genocide? “Genocide is a deliberate, systematic destruction of racial cultural or political groups.”(Feldman 29) What is the Holocaust? “Holocaust, the period between 1933-1945 when Nazi Germany systematically persecuted and murdered millions of Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, Jehovah's Witnesses, and many other people.”(Feldman 29) These two things tie into each other. The Holocaust was a genocide. Many innocent people were torn apart from their families, for many never to see them again. This murder of the “Jewish people of Europe began in spring 1941.”( Feldman 213) The Holocaust was one of the most harshest things done to mankind.
One cold, snowy night in the Ghetto I was woke by a screeching cry. I got up and looked out the window and saw Nazis taking a Jewish family out from their home and onto a transport. I felt an overwhelming amount of fear for my family that we will most likely be taken next. I could not go back to bed because of a horrid feeling that I could not sleep with.
A hero is a man who is distinguished by exceptional courage, nobility. and strength to carry out tasks that involve great risks. A hero can also be a person who fights for other people to help or save them. from their fears and fears. He opposes the villain - a person who does wicked or intentionally harm others in some way, emotionally or otherwise.
The Holocaust was one of the most tragic and trying times for the Jewish people. Hundreds of thousands of Jews and other minorities that the Nazis considered undesirable were detained in concentration camps, death camps, or labor camps. There, they were forced to work and live in the harshest of conditions, starved, and brutally murdered. Horrific things went on in Auschwitz and Majdenek during the Holocaust that wiped out approximately 1,378,000 people combined. “There is nothing that compares to the Holocaust.” –Fidel Castro
Growing up as a white American girl with a computer in her home, wifi, a place to sleep and go to at night, always having dinner on the table and little snacks to nibble on, I never really appreciated the situation I was in. I think a majority of young people, and even older people, in well-established countries don’t either. Until I was taught about the struggle of other people from countries I never think of, I never thought about my privilege. When I started learning of mass starvation, poverty, and war, I found that the more I knew the more I appreciated how I was born. This is why I think all people should be educated about the Holocaust and other genocides.
In today's modern times we hear the word hero all of the time. The news media throws the term around as if it is an everyday word. What exactly is a hero? Who, or what, can be classified as heroic? The correct definition of the word hero is: One invested with heroic qualities in the opinions of others. That is a fine definition for books and intellectual minds. To the average person, however, a hero is much more.
A hero is a person that goes out of their normal routine just to help someone out that they don’t even know. They touch one or many peoples lives and really care for them. They sometimes take risks for other people. A hero is someone that is known by many people for their courage and braveness to help out. Florence Nightingale should be known for her kindness for people and hospitals in need. She helped many others even as she was lying in bed ill.
