Why would a person decide to betray the beliefs they had fought so hard for? In Robert Cormiers novel The Chocolate War, the character of Jerry Renault changes drastically from a rebel to a follower in the end. The school gang known as the vigils and his moral beliefs motivates Jerry’s actions. He feels he must take a stand against evil. Jerry can be considered a hero because of his beliefs. In the end however he gives in to the things he fought against and becomes a follower.
There are many factors that cause Jerry to act the way he does. The main reason is he forced by the vigils to refuse the chocolates. "When he returned to the school after practice, he found a letter scotch-taped to the door of his locker. A summons from the vigils. Subject: Assignment."(Cormier 62) He is now forced to refuse the school chocolate sale. He now has to face Brother Leon and tell him no which soon gives him insight in to the teachers’ feelings. "His eyes gave him away. His face was always under control but his eyes showed his vulnerability."(Cormier 92) Jerry realizes that Brother Leon is struggling with the candy sale and that he is trying to hide his anger for Jerry’s’ refusal. Jerry knows Brother Leon’s hate for him and his fear of failure with the chocolate sale. "He had met Brother Leon in the corridor late one afternoon after football practice and had seen hate flashing in the teachers eyes. More than hate: something sick." (Cormier 92) Jerry knows that Leon hates him for refusing the chocolates but he doesn’t want to give into Leon and take the chocolates. This is what motivates Jerry to become a rebel
Webster’s dictionary defines a hero as any man admired for his courage, qualities or exploits, especially in war. Some people attribute the term hero mostly to war. My personal definition of a hero is someone who takes a stand against evil or an unjust cause. The term hero can be applied to anyone, it isn’t necessary to save the world from explosion to be a hero. The act of standing up for a friend can also be called a heroic act.
The character of Jerry Renault can easily be classified as a hero in my opinion. Jerry stands up for what he believes is right and says no to Brother Leon.
One character that seemed heroic to me was Boobie Miles Uncle. When Boobie was little he went in and out of foster homes, until his Uncle, L.V. Miles, took him in.Thus, L.V. Miles is a hero for Boobie by saving him from foster homes, and setting a good example by teaching him useful things.
The first example is when Jerry refused to sell the chocolates saying “No, I'm not going to sell the chocolates.” The moment he says this the whole story really spirals into place, he doesn't sell them and now the perfect balance of the school is ruined. The second time where a major choice was made is when more kids started to catch on with Jerry's idea as seen here “I never thought of just saying no like you did.” This shows that after Jerry said no to selling the chocolates other kids started to join in and also not sell them. This happening in the school really makes a lot of the teachers mad and nervous and forces the Vigils to take severe action like they never had before.
A person who overcomes antagonistic and unnecessary issues in a mature and powering manor. That is the definition of a hero to me. Someone who is being hurt and sees others hurt from the actions and takes charge and does everything in his power to change it. Someone who puts others before themselves and acts in the most chivalrous way. The definition of a hero is different for everyone. Some one might think of a hero as someone who can lift a car and put it on their back, or gives a dying person their kidney. Yes all of those people are forms of hero’s. You can’t tell someone that they are not a hero just because they don’t change into a disguise in a telephone both or can throw lightning bolts from a cloud. Everyone is a hero in their own way.
What is a hero? A hero can be classified as a number of things. A hero can be a person who in the opinions of others has heroic qualities or has performed a heroic act and is regarded as a model or ideal. Ervin Staub, a holocaust survivor from Hungary and as scholar on altruistic behavior, has written, "Goodness like evil often begins in small steps. Heroes evolve; they aren't born. Very often the rescuers make only a small commitment at the start, to hide someone for a day or two. But once they had taken that step, they begin to see themselves differently, as someone who helps. Social divide hinders their ability to forgive one another and reunite as a whole, but instead motivates them to persist with a restricting mindset. Everytime the classes act mercilessly to one another, enmity between the two grows and the more the hatred, the worse the situation gets. All this tension piles up and is released through heinous acts like the one in the quote above. As a result, their viewpoint towards one another become more and more flawed because they judge one person’s behavior for only their bad side and regarded this nature to the rest of the class. Even though the Socs and greasers share some common ground with each other, their similarities are forgotten and overwhelmed by the detestation they have for each other. S. E. Hinton uses this scene to point out that people can often make the wrong call because of the seething hate we might have for someone. Using loathing as an excuse to use treat someone unjustly is also proven in the quote: “"It was the Socs"...Johnny's face was cut up and bruised and swollen, and there was a wide gash from his temple to his cheekbone. The Chocolate War is a novel where social status and acceptance play key [themes] throughout the story. The story takes place at a private all boys' school. Cormier shows how social acceptance is important by the secretive club known as the "Vigils." The Vigils is a club that is an honor to be a part of and if you are a senior or an upper classman you are not considered to be "cool." The time period that the novel takes place is also important in the outcome of the novel. The novel takes place in the 1960's the same time that the "hippies" were in existence. This time period helps Jerry make his decision that will make him become [not normal].

Sonar is being used in boats and submarines in order for them to navigate through any ocean. The use of sonar benefits submarines because the sound waves produced from the sonar sweep across the ocean floor revealing obstructive objects in the path and sends this information back to the submarine. Some systems operate at more than 235 decibels, producing sound waves that can travel across tens or even hundreds of miles of ocean (Lethal Sounds). This shows us how powerful these sound waves can be. The sonar sound is only beneficial to humans and marine mammals such as whales are taking the damage. The sounds produced can blow out their hearing and throw them off course while migrating just because they are trying to get away from this deathly noise.
The Bauhaus was a school for art, design and architecture founded in Weimar, Germany with a core objective “to reimagine the material world to reflect the unity of all the arts.” The Bauhaus intended to create products that were simple in design which as a result could be easily mass produced. Gropius was thirty-six when he conceived the idea for the Bauhaus, after watching fellow Werkbund member, Henry Van de Velde, establish an arts and crafts school in Weimar, Germany. In 1919 Gropius became head of the arts and crafts school that Henry Van de Velde founded. Gropius proceeded to reorganize the school and then renamed it to be known as the Bauhaus.
