In recent years, employers are seeing a trend amongst young workers. Their complaints are mostly being dissatisfied with employees overall performance and are shocked to discover they lack the most basic skill set and knowledge needed to be successful in their job. It is becoming common practice for employees to refuse to perform certain tasks, or not be self motivated enough to complete an assignment without constant monitoring and assistance. Employees are showing up late to work with or without notice, and onsite training for skills such as team coordination and “motivation workshops” are becoming a necessity in the workplace. Employers are looking for professional, stable employees they can depend upon. In order for an employee to be successful, there are certain traits that they must possess such as good communication skills, dependability, and a positive attitude. A worker that retains these essential qualities is considered an asset to a company. Good communication skills are crucial in a work setting. A perfect example of this is during the interview process. Employers get a first look at this early on and can determine the level of communication skills an individual has based on this interaction. Good communication will make a potential employee stand out amongst other potential applicants. Good work ethic displayed by an employee is the key to success in any field of work. In today’s work setting, employers are quickly recognizing that valuable employees are becoming a rare commodity. Although definitions of a good employee differ from workplace to workplace, employees that display these fundamental qualities are universally sought after, and considered an asset to the company. Employees that display these qualities are generally more successful, and more likely to achieve job security. No matter what the field or profession, valuable employees will always be in demand. That is why traits like good communication skills, dependability, and positive work ethics are universally considered to be good worker qualities that every wage earner should strive to reflect.
With all discrimination aside, what’s important is to show some honest respect, ethics, value, and loyalty to every employee.
A good communication skill is needed by the NM in dealing with the organization and it is very vital especially in managing change. Communications plays as a critical factors of both management and leadership. It can contribute to stress, feeling of alienation and lack of recognition or it can help in facilitate positive working relationship.
There are literally hundreds of desirable traits in the workplace. Of these, one of the arguably most important is to be well-rounded in the workplace. Many skills can assist an individual in being a well-rounded employee. Oral communication skills, written communication skills, teamwork, technical skills, leadership skills, adaptation skills, computer skills, interpersonal skills and analytic abilities are some of the key factors to a well-rounded employee. While these skills all seem to be of equal ability to the well-rounded employee, the scope of this paper will only delve into a few of the skills preceding. Technical skills, oral communication skills and leadership skills will all be detailed in this review in an attempt to help you (the reader) become a well-rounded employee.
As stated by Dessler (2011) selection of the right employees is imperative for numerous reasons. These reasons can include the knowledge that organizations performance is contingent on its subordinate’s ability. Moreover, it should be common knowledge that employees with the reliable skills and characteristics will perform better for the company. On the other hand, employees who lack those skills or who are slacker will not perform efficiently, and the organization’s performance will suffer (Dessler, 2011).
What are the single most important characteristic people want to their employees? Reliability, responsible, good attitude? No. The answer is integrity. Employers want to be told the truth. They want people who have a moral compass and who are honest. In a world of spin and branding, and buying and selling, the concept of honesty seems to be dismissed, but it always comes back to bite those who ignore it in the butt. We see in the front pages of newspapers, magazines, and websites who are regularly crowded with stories of the great and the good who lied, stole, and cheated their way to fame, wealth and destruction.
Communication skills also give you an important competitive advantage in the job market. As an effective communicator, you will be more valuable to your company as well, because good communication skills help companies in many ways: building closer ties with important communities in the marketplace; influencing conversations, perceptions, and trends; “humanizing” otherwise impersonal business organizations; solving problems in less time; making better decisions; increasing productivity; smoothing out work flows; creating more compelling promotional messages; and enhancing professional images and company brands. 2.

Manager who has excellent communication skills can effectively and successfully represent the company in front of outside audience and major stakeholders. One’s career, school life, and even socializing are affected by communication. If you do not know how to communicate, you probably do not have many friends. Communication has been used since the days of the cavemen. When the cavemen learned to communicate they greatly increased their hunting potential. When they learned to communicate on the hunt and before the hunt, they caught much more game then when they were just randomly running after the animals with spears. What, though, is work motivation? According to Laird (2006), “motivation is a fundamental component of performance “ and “is the reason that someone chooses to do some things and chooses not to do others”. In other words, work motivation is what energizes workers to the level of output required to fulfill a task, directs their energy towards the objectives that they need to accomplish, and sustains that level of effort over a period of time (Steers et al., 2004). In essence, worker motivation is what gets the job done. Employee motivation has always been a central problem in the workplace, and, as an individual in a supervisory position, it becomes ones duty to understand and institute systems that ensure the proper motivation of your subordinates. Proper motivation of employees can ensure high productivity and successful workflow, while low worker motivation can result in absenteeism, decreased productivity rates, and turnover. A large body of research has been produced regarding motivation, and much of this research is applicable to the workplace. Due to the nature of man, motivation varies from individual to individual, and, because of this, there is no one system that is the best for ensuring worker motivation in every organizational situation, and, as a product, many theories have been created to outline what drives people to satisfactorily complete their work tasks. Being assertive, being able to lead, being someone who can persuade others to a cause shows someone who is dependable and strong. After all, I have learned that if I do not stand for what I want, I could easily be led to a path where I despise myself. To be the best I can be, I have to be able to define my boundaries with others and myself. By doing so, I can not only be my most productive and successful self, but others will learn what to expect from me.
