In her story, "Full Cicada Moon", Marilyn Hilton exhibits the theme "how communities deal with differences" in several ways. Hilton conveys a story about an adolescent half African American and half Japanese girl in a novel-in-verse book. The book talks about fitting in and standing up for what is right. Throughout the book, I have noticed several examples of the theme “how communities deal with difference.” Commixed race Mimi, is moving into a predominantly white Vermont town which is enough to make her feel like an alien. The town follows the conception that sheltered towns struggle to accept differences. As Mimi arrives at her new town, Mimi has noticed the confusion about her ethnicity. An example of this is
Jimmy Dean once advised, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to reach my destination.” The novel A Long Walk to Water authored by Linda Sue Park, is a work of realistic historical fiction and a dual narrative focused on adjusting to change. One storyline is about a young eleven year old girl named Nya who is apart of the Nuer tribe and lives in Sudan. Nya lives the life of a young Sudanese girls because they collect water for their family every day. The other storyline is about an eleven year old boy named Salva who is in the Dinka tribe and lives in Sudan, but travels throughout many countries and states in his life. Salva’s story line shows how getting attacked by rebels and escaping from civil war changed his and many others’ lives. Both characters face many changes throughout the story. Linda Sue Park wants readers to know to accept change for good or bad.
On page 77 of the book Full Cicada Moon by Marilyn Hilton, Mrs. Stanton says, “Our dreams are a serious matter. When you take them seriously, everyone else does too.” This quote helps the reader understand more about the theme of dreams. In the story, Mimi wants to be an astronaut, but gender and racial stereotypes cause people believe her dreams aren’t serious. Mimi has to try and pursue her dreams anyway, and not let anyone stop her. A time when Mimi faces gender stereotypes is when she tells the class she wants to be an astronaut, but everyone laughs at her. This may have made Mimi feel like her dreams were unrealistic, and she may have felt like her dreams were crushed. Although it may have been difficult, her parents, her friends, and

People have goals everyday, believe it or not some people think that dreams aren't worth it. I believe that it is worth it to dream because it gives a person a goal, it makes them feel good, and it makes them stronger. I know this from The Pearl, A Cubs video, the Susan Boyle video, and We Beat the streets.
To start off, first, the narrator thinks that the house her and her husband John are renting for the next three months is haunted or it wouldn’t be as cheap as it is for being such a beautiful place. Another thing is that she unhappy in her marriage. Her husband doesn’t listen to her, tells her she’s wrong and laughs at her. She is feeling very unwell and all he says is she has temporary nervous depression and only tells her to stay in bed and do nothing. The way she describes things is very bleak, dark, depressing. She keeps going back to thoughts of the house being haunted and gets anxious. She becomes angry with John for no reason sometimes and thinks it’s from her ‘nervous condition’. Something the reader may not catch onto when she talks about how she doesn’t like her bedroom is how she took the nursery, so right away, we know she has a baby. She feels trapped with the barred windows and not being able to go anywhere, having to just lay down and look at the most revolting yellow wallpaper shes ever seen. Writing the story alone makes her extremely exhausted and she says that John doesn’t know the extent of her suffering. Eventually, it’s made known that she can’t even go near her own child and it makes her increasingly nervous. She has unwanted thoughts throughout the entire story of the terrifying ugly yellow

The play “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry has many interesting characters. In my opinion, the most fascinating character is Ruth because of her many emotions and captivating personality. She goes through extreme emotions in the play such as happiness, sadness, anger, stress, and confusion. Ruth is very independent, firm, kind, witty, and loving.
“Just over a year ago, my father plucked me up like a weed and took me and all our belongings… and stopped in front of a house in Euclid,Ohio.”(Creech 1). When a child moves from one place to another, they feel a range of emotions including a sense of lost. In Walk Two Moons, Sharon Creech uses internal and external forces to change Salamincas character by forcing her to leave something and someone she loves, using nature as a way to influence her through the drive, and making her have to realize her mom is dead.
