Through American history, the people of America originated from Britain meaning their language also originated from Britain. From personal knowledge, the first modifications that were known to the English language started with Noah Merriam in the colonial era. He wrote the Webster dictionary and purposely altered some of the words in his dictionary to create a unique language for the “New Land”. He succeeds in changing several words, including the word “colour” to “color”. However, since America has come to life, many things have created a way to slowly kill and change the English language verbally and in written form. One of the things that has changed it in this generation is texting on one 's phones. Texting has changed the English language …show more content…
Based on knowledge, English has changed since the 1600s or even later than that. As observed, if a person from this generation were to read the Declaration of Independence or a book by Shakespeare, they would have a hard time understanding the English language. The reason for that is because the original English has evolved over long periods of time. In the books or documents from the older centuries, it uses words with different meanings and it also uses words that aren’t used in this generation such as thy, thee, and thou. English originated from Britain, which means that Americans created ways to change it up. Americans didn’t want to associate with Britain, so they wanted to create everything on their own, one being their language. For an example, when an American say “cookie” Britain says “biscuit” and when Americans say “french fries” Britain says “chips.” As shown American English has changed from the original English. One can tell that the language has changed based on the different words, Americans use to demonstrate something. Even though the background of the English language doesn’t correlate with texting and phones nowadays, it still affects the way our language works compared to other countries . Based on knowledge, throughout different generations English has been created to where it uses slang, emoji, acronyms, and contraction. People nowadays often use slang to describe an event or current situation. Slang is words that have been changed to fit a meaning. Words like cheddar, which means money, swag, which means cool, and noob, which means you are new to something have all been changed to fit a different meaning. Emoji’s are little pictures that describe how one is feeling. This has affected the English language because it demotes the value of actual emotions. Acronyms are letters that represent words. For example, the acronyms LOL, which means laugh out loud, GTG, which means got to go, and OMG means oh my god. Lastly, there 's contractions, which puts together two words with an apostrophe. Contractions can be shown with words such as “can’t, shouldn’t, couldn’t and etc.” As shown, texting and modern day words have created many ways of showing the simplification of words in the English
Text messaging has become a norm in our generation, as technology rapidly advances and gives way to more efficient forms of communication in a fast-paced world; and many are skeptical about the influence this new form of interaction is having on our society, especially with our younger generation. David Crystal, a professor at the University of Wales, writes “2b or Not 2b?” in support of text messaging. He insists, despite those who underestimate or negate the beneficial influence text messaging has on language proficiency, that “there is increasing evidence that [texting] helps rather than hinders literacy” and that the fairly recent form of communication has actually been around for a while and “is merely the latest manifestation of the human ability to be linguistically creative and to adopt language to suit the demands of diverse settings. In contrast, Jeffery Kluger argues in “We Never Talk Anymore: The Problem with Text Messaging” that text messaging is rapidly becoming a substitute for more genuine forms of communication and is resulting in difficulty among young peoples of our generation to hold a face-to-face conversation, engage in significant nonverbal expression, and ultimately build effective relationships with family, friends and co-workers. Both writers’ present valid arguments, however, my personal experience with text messaging has led me to agree more with Crystal’s view on the matter. Text messaging is indeed having a positive effect on society by making frequent texters primarily aware of the need to be understood, as well as offering betterment of spelling and writing through practice, and reinventing and expanding on a bygone dimension of our language through the use of rebuses and abbreviations.
The United States is made up of multiple cultures, race, and languages. Many people come from Mexico or Asian parts of the world, like China in search for a better life. “Our generation doesn't ring the doorbell. They text or call to say they're outside,” this line is from one of the well-known social networks, Tweeter, which shows how the way of communication has change in this modern life. According to 2013 statistics by Business Insider, in United States alone, smartphone owners aged 18 to 24 send 2,022 texts per month on average — 67 texts on a daily basis — and receive another 1,831 texts (Cocotas). Nowadays, technology such as text messaging has practically replaced traditional face to face communication among the society primarily in young generations because texting allows messages to be sent fast and effortless. In order to quickly type what they are trying to say in text messaging, people are frequently using textspeak; the language created by using abbreviation rather than complete words. Based on this phenomenon, David Crystal, an honorary professor of linguistics at the University of Wales has published an article entitled ‘2b or not 2b?’ in the Guardian on July 5, 2008 comes out with the research and studies that state texting can actually improve the literacy of children and create creativity of writing. However, by observing more critically, texting do decrease a person’s ability to switch between textspeak and the normal rules of grammar and adversely affect formal writing and conversational skills.

The use inventive spelling, abbreviations. As high school students start to use short texting, some of their grades dropped due to the spelling errors they make. So many teens get used to wing abbreviating that they just begin to write that that way. Some teenagers writing skills have turned into sentence fragments, because of the limited space they put into text sentence. In my research how does texting affect teen literacy the percentage was 64 percent of students who say they incorporated text language in their writing, 25 percent said they did so to convey have used text shortcuts a lot of students, vocabulary and grammar is also affecting their literacy. Everyone is a part of a community. Most people are a part of multiple communities. A community is a group of people that have a commonality. Sometimes it is based on where you live, hobbies, goals, etc. I believe that communities are created unconsciously and are connected to someone’s identity, especially when a person is considered a part of multiple communities. Sometimes, a person may connect very well with their community. Sometimes, a person may feel very distant from their community. In the movie, “English Vinglish”, the main character, Sashi, shows examples on how communities are created through commonalities, and the acculturation theory. Coming from a Spanish speaking household having to learn a new language can always be difficult. While, I was a child learning a second language was difficult. It was difficult for me to put words to use in the correct way. And use terms that make sense with one another term. It was difficult for me because some Spanish words sound the same as English words, and while learning I wanted to translate everything the way I say it in Spanish to English. For example, in Spanish “helo” means ice, but if you say it out loud it sounds like “yellow”. Little things like that will be a big issue to me. I have to put up with many looks from others and hear all sorts of criticism around me. Learning a new language at a young age was a struggle with reading
