The 1st period bell rings, school has begun. To my right students are checking their Snapchat stories, and on the left I see others liking pictures on Instagram. “Ring, Ring” there goes my phone! Cell phones are a major distraction to students in school. Others may argue that phones benefit students, because they can be used to look up information. No kid should be distracted in school by their cell phones.
Cell phones affect students’ ability to focus. Students who watch online presentations forget more than people that listen to a presentation that is on paper. People that are concentrated on many different things at once tend to be less productive than a person that is focused on one thing at a time. According to Patricia Greenfield “A US college did an experiment; half of the students in the class where allowed to use their electronic devices, while others had to keep theirs shut. The students that were allowed to use their electronic devices had lower test scores than the other half of students.”(Carr) This evidence shows that cell phones are not helping students in school. Students cannot be using their phones for tests or else they will not get good grades. Also, if a phone goes off, a student that is paying attention in class will get distracted. Also, text messaging can be used by students to cheat on tests. For example, a student can take a picture of the test, and send that to their friend. The University of Essex in the United Kingdom did two studies about this. The first study required 37 pairs of strangers. They asked the strangers to talk to each other for 10 minutes about something interesting that happened in their lives within the past month. Half of the participants were able to have cell phones present, but the other half were not. The people with a cell phone were far less positive than the others. The second study required 34 pairs of strangers. Half were asked to write about their lives with their cell phones, and the rest with a notepad.
