Cutaneous Actinomycosis is an anaerobic, gram positive bacterial infection seen in different areas of the body, most commonly affecting the deeper tissues of the neck, thorax, and abdomen. Actinomycosis is caused in animals by the bacteria Actinomyces bovis and Actinomyces israelii in humans, which is naturally present in the mouth and pharynx. The infection is commonly seen in tropical areas of the country and is characterized by chronic and progressive suppurative inflammation, causing lumpy tumor like masses. Cutaneous Actinomycosis rarely occurs and presents itself with few clinical symptoms. The infection develops slowly and at first seems to not affect the general health of the patient, but if it is not treated successfully the condition may be fatal. Its diagnosis requires a high index of clinical suspicion. Occurrences of the extremities are uncommon and sometimes have an association with trauma and bites. Although it is a rare, cattle and humans are the ones usually diagnosed with this disease. It has also been seen in middle-aged, large breed, outdoor dogs and in cats.
Communication is something we all humans use. Communication “is the sharing of information between individuals by using speech”. People have ways of communicating some have their weaknesses in conversations and others have their strengths. When I communicate with others I feel that some things I say I do not verbalize right. I have two strengths and three weaknesses in my communicating. My three weakens in my communication are, check nonverbal feedback, to make people wrong and recognize that people understand information in different ways and my two strengths in my communication are being flexible, and take responsibility for the communication.
As a social worker it is important to have basic communication skills in order to connect with clients. There are six basic and four advanced skills that are used in direct practice to make communication more effective. The basic skills include reflection of feelings, paraphrasing, open ended questions, closed ended questions, clarification and attending behaviors. Advanced skills consist of summarization, information giving, interpretation and confrontation. Not only is it important to know what these skills are, it is also important to know what the appropriate and inappropriate uses are. It is also important to self-reflect on your use of these skills, and whether it is a strength or something to continue to work to improve on.

During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. On a daily basis, we come in contact with individuals that we have to communicate with, wither it be for work purposes, educational purposes, or social practices. As active humans we cannot escape the idea of socializing or communication, therefor; we make it a daily routine who we communicate with, how we communicate with them, what we listen to and how we listen it. With this routine habits are formed, some are strengths but others are weaknesses that diminish the communication quality. It is extremely important for individuals to recognize these strengths and weakness within their communication routine. By recognizing their strengths, they are able to improve even further and use their ability to get them closer to goals they may have set for themselves. Recognizing their weaknesses is just as important if not more important.
Throughout this course, I realized there was a lot that I needed to do for myself to improve my communication skills. I set goals for myself that I felt were reasonable and things that I needed to work on in order to get where I want to be in life. Some goals I feel that I have reached like being able to give good advice, as well as making eye contact with someone while they are talking to me. Some goals, however, I have not reached like not becoming so nervous when someone speaks to me and listening apprehensively. I know I have not reached these goals yet because I still experience these almost every day. Even though I have yet to reach them, I know I am taking steps in my life to make sure these goals or ideas become reality for me. I don’t think some of my plan succeeded because I have always been very shy and timid and I don’t think overcoming this social anxiety is something that will come easily. It is something I need to work towards but, like I have mentioned I have been taking steps to improve this. Not all of my goals were unsuccessful. I have noticed that I am getting better at making eye contact with people. I improved on this by telling myself when someone is speaking to me, to look at them. I would tell myself this over and over in my mind where it almost comes naturally now. I have also discovered that giving advice is coming easier to me now, even though I did not follow the steps that I mentioned in my skill plan. In order to reach this goal I had to take my stress away from the conversation and concentrate mainly on what is right in front of me. Doing this allowed me to open my mind and communicate to the best of my ability.

Let’s face it you want to listen well before setting a plan of action. Never jump into any conversation unprepared, not only can it cause conflict but you can lose credibility if the meaning of what you are trying to say is lost. Verbal communication is always best, talking to another individual face to face is a good idea this way you can judge their reactions by their body language and you can express the correct meaning. But, remember that verbal is not the only form of communication. Your nonverbal communication can say a lot to the receiver (ie. body language). Use supportive messages rather than defensive ones can be more productive. Any conflict can be resolved through correct and effective communication.

It’s not only how you express a message so that it is received and understood by someone in exactly the way you intended, it’s also how you listen to achieve the full meaning of what’s being said and to make the other person feel heard and understood.
