Career Center Assignment 1
For this assignment, I set up an appointment with Dana Nordyke to get my resume and cover letter critiqued. Our appointment took place on Friday October 21, 2016 at 9:30 am. Dana looked over printed copies of my resume and my cover letter. Dana first looked at my resume. One of the things Dana mentioned is that I should take out the objective section on my resume because not a lot of people us them anymore. Dana also mentioned that I should take out “College of Human Ecology” under my education section because employers could care less what college I am apart of. Dana gave me some suggestions that I should use for my headings. For example, instead of calling a section “Membership, I should label it as “Involvement instead so the information underneath will make for fit better under that section. Dana also said that instead of saying “Portfolio Upon

I learned from that critique that I should always start with the date, person name, company name, and address at the top of the letter. Another thing Dana taught me during the critique of my cover letter is that I should be very formal when addressing the person, I am writing to. For example, I should refer to a woman as Ms. Jane Doe and a man as Mr. John Doe. Dana also helped me format a thesis statement in my first paragraph so the next paragraph will have just have examples of why my thesis statement is true. Dana also mentioned that I should think about the kinds of colors I use when formatting my resume. She mentioned this because if I used grey or a light color and the employer prints my resume or cover letter out in black in white those colors on my resume and cover letter won’t show up well. Dana also taught me that my cover letter should be tailored to each company and I should use keywords that the company mentioned in their job description throughout my letter. Overall, Dana didn’t think my cover letter was half
I went for the Career Network Event and it was a great learning experience for me. I went there trying to apply everything that I learned from my job search class and it was a success. Because I had the chance to speak to the employer of my interest, and I everything went as planned, I remember my professor in class told us to make sure we have a goal and to know which company that we would like to work for and just go for it. I went in there and I did the exact thing that he told us. I remember before taking this class I used to try to speak to every single one of employer and then I put everything in one folder. Later on when I went to contact the job that I was interested in, I would get all the employers mixed up and because of that, that cost me a lot of jobs that I always wanted in the past.

I would like to start off with thanking you for having the time to review the work and effort that I have put into my English 101 Final Portfolio. In the time in class that I have had this quarter I have learned new techniques that I had not known before in writing, for example I have learned about how to build paragraphs in a correct formal way. In my work in the portfolio I hope to show how my skills as a writer have improved from the work I have done before. I plan to take the experience that I have had in this class and take it with me to help me improve as a student on other class topics. In the time that I have been in class I believe that it has helped me in a positive way to help me manage my time, along with building my confidence in writing. In this beginning of the quarter I had many challenges when it came to writing a paper and I feel that I have improved my skills when it came to writing an essay.

As I look back at the first paper I wrote for this class, I see lots of things I needed to improve on. I was simple minded in many of my ideas that I wrote about. Throughout the paper I only elaborated on a few thoughts and ideas. It all could have been summed up in two paragraphs. My opening paragraph talked about my whole paper. "A university education is important to me. By getting a degree in geography I hope to improve my knowledge and increase my chances for a good job. Not only will I gain knowledge but also gain the experience of university life as a student. By receiving my education I will prepare myself for a job and improve my communication with other people."

I have known from an early age that I’ve wanted to become a doctor. Helping people has always been a passion of mine. When I was younger, I wanted to be a veterinarian. However, after working with young children I have found that I love working with them, and have a connection with children. Currently, I am interested in becoming either a neonatologist or a general pediatrician so I can continue to work with young children.
I have applied for several jobs and internship positions in the past and am thus familiar with tailoring my resume to fit the need of the organization. Because I am involved both on and off campus, I had sufficient content to include in my resume. However, one aspect of writing my resume that did pose as a challenge was the formatting of it. I had it ingrained in my mind that the length of my resume had to be one page. Because of this, I altered the margins, spacing, and deleted some relevant volunteer experiences to ensure my resume was exactly one page. After speaking with Professor Ross concerning my resume format, I comprehended the importance of having sufficient white space. I was also informed that my resume can indeed be more than one pages, especially since I needed to add bullets to some of my experiences to ensure that the formatting remained the same throughout the entire document. This information allowed me to edit my resume so that the content, format, and style all contributed to the easy read of this
