Most people play a lot of card games like Uno or poker. But the thing that makes a card game customizable card game is that the players have their own deck of cards which are totally different from his opponent’s cards. Even before the game starts each opponent will “build decks” by selecting from a big deck of cards. They can create their deck however they like, as long as they stick to the rules of the game which is not possible in games like poker as a standard deck of cards might be finite with 13 cards for each suit plus one or two jokers.

LCGs consist of a core set of cards which are divided into several basic “starter” decks, and players can customize these decks via additional cards. This basically eliminates the “blind buy” model of collectible card games (CCGs), because you know pretty much what you’re getting with each purchase. Netrunner is an asymmetric two-player game because each side has different options, as well as a different way of play. This is compared to symmetric games like Magic or World of Warcraft card game where each player has the same fundamental options. Some LCG core sets seem incomplete like in FFG’s Star Wars LCG, for example, you can only make decent for four of the six factions with the available cards, and must buy expansions to make those other two playable. The Netrunner core lets you make playable decks for all seven factions. Dominion, for example, is a deck builder in which there are multiple collections, however, decks are built in-game rather than out of a game. Dominion was created for parties of over two people so that they could all enjoy quick deckbuilding strategy. I see that Fantasy Flight Games chose to have Netrunner be viewed as a strategy game where serious attention and strategy would need to be performed in order to create good decks. Bang is another example of a strategy game for multiple players. It uses fixed Core Sets, it requires more than two people to play, and it is based on a “Spaghetti Western” theme. Bang! has been very successful because of its unique theme and Sheriff Vs Outlaw gameplay. Though Android: Netrunner is not meant for over two people a game, it does incorporate a similar asymmetrical gameplay as Runners Vs Corporations, and sticks to the Futuristic Cyberpunk theme. Also, when compared to simple playing card games like blackjack, Android: Netrunner gives a much more appreciative charm in between
