*As you walk into the Divination tower your eyes are drawn to a round table covered in felt. Over the felt there appears to be a dark cloth with a deck of cards. Professor ____ is standing by the table and beckons you closer. She motions for you to take a seat and when the last student arrives she turns and starts talking. She appears excited*
Welcome back to Divination. Over the past few weeks we have looked into many different ways to unleash your inner eye. Today we shall be looking at an art form that is very close to my own heart. Cartomancy, more commonly known as Tarot is a valuable skill for any Seer to learn. You will see on the table in front of you my own Tarot deck laid out. I must ask that you do not touch, as you may

sully the cards and impair the reading. But where did it all begin? Tarot is an art form that has intrigued and inspired Seer’s, historians and scholars alike for many years. It originated in Italy as far back as 1440 and it included many of the Major Arcana cards that are in the deck today. The cards were known as ‘Visconti Trumps’ and were played by the rich however certain cards were removed as they were considered to be offensive to the 15th century noble. Cards like Death and The Devil were especially feared. It was these cards in particular that saw some religious leaders to try and attempt to ban the game. An early sermon from this time quotes the Devil card as having the ability to steal the souls of the players when really this was just a simple card game. The rebirth of the Tarot as a form of Divination came three hundred years later when in 1781 Antoine Court de Gebelin theorised that the cards were Egyptian in origin and therefore held the key to mystical oriental knowledge. However the discovery of the Rosetta Stone in 1799 which allowed Egyptian hieroglyphs to be translated did not uphold De Gebilin’s theory. Since then Tarot has been connected to nearly every magical system or religion. Today’s Tarot deck is very different to the card game of the 15th Century. Learning to read and master the cards is an important skill for any diviner but first you must understand the importance of looking after your deck. A Tarot deck consists of 78 cards made up of 22 Major Arcana and 56 Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana is then broken down into 4 suits: Pentacles, Cups, Wands and Swords. Each suit has its own meaning which we shall look at in more detail later. Obtaining your own deck is a very personal experience.
There are quite literally thousands of different styles of Tarot cards. Sometimes you may find that you simply do not feel a connection with one kind. Some people believe that you should never buy your first deck, they believe that a deck must be given to you as a gift. In this way the mystical forces are finding you and not the other way round. I don’t necessarily agree with this rule as sometimes the perfect deck will find you in other ways. When I first started reading Tarot many years ago, I visited a Mystical shop and was browsing the crystals when a Tarot deck fell off the shelf in front of me and landed at my feet. What made it even stranger was that the deck in question had been hidden from my view. I believe that the deck chose me. I have used many decks since then but the connection I feel when I use those cards is still a powerful feeling. Trust your own …show more content…
judgement. Even beginners to Tarot can have extremely meaningful experiences with the cards as every person brings their own beliefs to the cards. When practicing your readings I would advise you to study and familiarise yourselves with each of the cards. I find it useful to pick one card each day and keep a Tarot journal where you jot down your feelings and understanding of that card. Before long you will be comfortable using them but all this comes with practice and patience. Now you have your cards and you are getting to know them.
The next thing you will need is to know the question you would like answered. When doing a reading for someone else it can help to know what it is they are seeking however it is not essential. There are two types of readings: Question readings and Open readings. Generally, with Question readings the Querent or Seeker will have a specific question they will like answered. Open readings are more general and give an overall reading.
There are many different types of Tarot Spreads but for beginners it is always best to start with the simple three card spread. This spread can be used in one of two ways: Past, present and future or The Problem, advice, The likely outcome. I have given you an example of a reading I have done below. Please do not worry, if your reading of these cards would have been different. As I have said before all readings are open to the interpretation of the Seer. In Year three we shall look at the Tarot cards in far more detail and you shall practice your own
interpretations. The card we are looking at for the past reading is the Ace of Pentacles. The Ace of Pentacles is often depicted as a hand coming out of a cloud holding a golden pentacle. This picture represents the magic of the earth element and the card itself represents good prospects for business ventures. It can represent new beginnings and a time of prosperity for you. My reading of this card is that in the past a mortgage or loan has been taken out to start a new business venture or idea. Pentacles usually mean hard work and a lot of hard work was put into this idea. In the past you were secure in your profession and comfortable with material items. The second card is for the present and is The Lovers. The Lovers can represent the trials of relationships. The cards sometimes depict a man standing between two women appearing to make a choice with Cupid flying above them. It is the sixth card in the Major Arcana. My reading of the card suggests that your relationship may have suffered due to your business venture and that maybe you have been neglecting other areas of your life in favour of material gain. The lovers card usually represents an important decision so it may be that you feel you have reached a crossroads and are now preparing to make a decision. The Lovers card is upright which indicates positivity therefore perhaps you have subconsciously already made this decision. Take care as this card implies that the outcome will have great personal relevance. The final card is Strength and this card represents the future. This card signifies courage and endurance. This card is about control more than power and is the eighth card in the Major Arcana. My reading of this card is that in your future you may face some struggle which will require personal restraint and self discipline. This card reminds you how important it is to believe in yourself and bravely face the challenges ahead. Love and kindness will be the positive forces in your future and you must learn that through forgiveness you will find inner peace. Once you have done a reading you will want to cleanse your deck of the energy. This can be done in one of two ways either by keeping a quartz crystal with your cards which will clear them reading for the next reading or you can place your cards on a window ledge under moonlight. The Moon is a great feminine energy and will cleanse your cards. That is everything for this lesson. There will be a short quiz to test what you have learned today and I look forward to seeing you all next week.
Everyone wishes for a magical day in their life where they could be a princess for a day. Some wish to have a fluffy, long and pink dress, or a crown on their head. I always wished and wished that I could be that princess. On March 28th of 2015, that wish came true.
...r experience prevails over deck type and that careful deckbuilding is vital. During a game, a player who can more easily see a profitable outcome is bound to succeed over one who cannot. Despite the deck used, it was clear that Jon was able to defeat Jim. However, it is important to use a deck that is suitable in certain environments, even for very experienced players. A deck that thrives on cards that can quickly diminish life before an opponent can cast a single spell is very suitable, while the opposing one is not. A deck needs spells that can win the game when used correctly, and consequently needs the cards that allow you to use them correctly.
Out of This World is an outstanding card effect that many magicians have improved upon and performed with their own unique twist, including me. Out of this world has been billed as “The Greatest Card Trick of The Last Century,” and also “The Trick That Fooled Winston Churchill.” According to Curry a magician by the name of Harry Green performed Out of This World for Churchill, the effect fooled Churchill so he demanded it be shown to him again. Harry Green did so, he performed it six more times for Churchill and left him completely baffled every time. The method is simple yet deceptive, and it is truly a classic of card magic. So now with much excitement, I present to you my re-telling of Paul Curry’s Out of This

Shabbat Shalom. Thank you Carolyn for the warm introduction…My wife Tami and I are so thrilled to be here. Many of you may not know that I grew up at camp in Zionsville, and in many ways it was formative in the development of my Jewish path. I could not wait to show my family the special place I knew Indianapolis to be. And we have arrived to thunderous applause – or that could just be the storms we’ve experienced over the past weeks, I’m not sure.
There is no arguing Walt Disney practiced what he preached. In fact, he did what he did so well that people continue to bring others to see what he did to this day, that being Disneyland. First, we’ll start by learning about the background history of Disneyland. Next, we’ll compare Disneyland from when it first started to what it has developed into. And finally, we’ll explore all the eight parks and what they have to offer.

Throughout the nation catastrophes occur on a daily basis; however there are a few catastrophes that have taken national precedence and left a traumatized nation. Most usually these catastrophes are an act of terrorism. Michael Nelson (2010) describes the nature of such terrorism catastrophes as disconcerting, unanticipated and that unnerve “the country’s sense of safety and identity” (p. 20). When such “a traumatic event results in the death of civilians” and “calls the nation’s institutions or values into question” the nation as a whole looks to their leader, our president, to offer solace and calm through a responsive speech (Campbell and Jamieson, 2008, p. 102). In Presidents Creating the Presidency, (2008) the authors have labeled these speeches as a national eulogy in which they usually occur at the sight of the

Mindfulness is defined by Merriam-Webster dictionary as “the practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one's thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.” Many people practice mindfulness to reduce stress, but it has also been shown to reduce rumination, stress, and emotional reactivity. On the other side, mindfulness has been been linked to boosting memory, focus, and cognitive flexibility while aiding in relationships (Davis and Hayes, 2012). This state of thought is useful not only for people already anxious, but also for those preparing to enter more stressful situations. Practicing mindfulness earlier on can help with finding coping mechanisms before one is put in a stressful
