Visual Analysis Essay Over the course of history, the relationship between Doctors and Tobacco products has changed greatly. During World War II, smoking reached a high; at this point in time people were smoking on the job and Tobacco products were a huge part of their daily lives. During the late 1940s, health concerns over cigarettes began to rise. Many Tobacco companies took defensive action against this, by launching ad campaigns that featured Medical Doctors as well as Physicians. One of the most famous advertisements of the time was an ad produced by Camel Cigarettes. This ad proved effective in all manors, as it used many different elements to entice consumers. One appealing advertisement for Camel cigarettes covered the entire back cover of LIFE magazine in November 1946. The ad catches the eyes of viewers with an image of a Doctor with a Camel cigarette in his hand, he is dressed in a white coat that screams authority. The advertisement does a great job of making the doctor powerful as well as friendly, it covers a wholesome amount of both qualities. The paragraph about the doctor also exhibits that Camel cigarettes have a calming effect on people; while the doctor is stressed from a long work schedule, he is able to find relief in their product. One reason that the doctor is effective is due to the ideal picture they use, in this ad they do not use a particular person such as an athlete or celebrity, they use an actor who portrays an entire group of professionals in a noble fashion. The prevalent use of tobacco products among Americans is an important issue that should be brought to the surface. This issue should be raised because many of the diseases and illnesses associated with tobacco use are preventable. Most individuals are aware of the health threats associated with tobacco use, but are unable to quit. As future healthcare professionals, part of our duty is to educate the public about these health threats as well as help tobacco users quit. Throughout this paper we will inform about the various tobacco products, the effects they pose on the body, cessation options and strategies available for users, and learning outcomes.
The first image I have chosen to discuss is a smoking advert from the 1950’s. It features John Wayne smoking a Camel cigarette. It is a commercial advert, because it is trying to sell a product. Conversely, the advert that I will be comparing with is an advocacy advert, because it is trying to persuade you not to smoke. It is giving you advice about an activity which is considered controversial. It is an advert from ‘Alghanim Medical services 2000’. It uses a very formal font and adds formal authenticity.

This study, conducted by the American Cancer Society, found increased mortality among smokers. Yet it was not until 1964 that the Surgeon General put out a report acknowledging the danger of cigarettes. The first action to curb smoking was the mandate of a warning on cigarette packages by the Federal Trade Commission (Encarta, 2002). In 1971, all cigarette advertising was banned from radio and television, and cities and states passed laws requiring nonsmoking sections in public places and workplaces (Encarta, 2002). Now in some cities smoking is being completely banned from public places and workplaces and various people are striving for more of these laws against smoking.
