The prevalent use of tobacco products among Americans is an important issue that should be brought to the surface. This issue should be raised because many of the diseases and illnesses associated with tobacco use are preventable. Most individuals are aware of the health threats associated with tobacco use, but are unable to quit. As future healthcare professionals, part of our duty is to educate the public about these health threats as well as help tobacco users quit. Throughout this paper we will inform about the various tobacco products, the effects they pose on the body, cessation options and strategies available for users, and learning outcomes.
In 2013, approximately one in every five adults in the United States were current cigarette smokers (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). To put this number into

Smokeless tobacco includes two main categories, which are chewing tobacco and snuff. Chewing tobacco is typically composed of loose tobacco leaves, and snuff is ground up tobacco leaves that can come dry, moist, or in pouches. The nicotine in this drug enters through mouth tissue. According to the CDC, in 2012 about four in every 100 adults used smokeless tobacco (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). Some of the damaging effects on the body are tooth loss, cavities, and decay, bone loss at the roots of teeth, mouth lesions, receding gums, and hypertension. Smokeless tobacco also causes many forms of cancer like mouth, gum, and esophageal cancer, as well as heart disease, stroke, leukoplakia, etc. (American Cancer Society, 2013). Contrary to some viewpoints, smokeless tobacco is not a safe alternative to smoking. Both tobacco products are detrimental on the body. There are more deaths associated with cigarette smoking than with smokeless tobacco use, however both forms of tobacco cause harm on the body and death (American Cancer Society,
Advice on the Risks of Nicotine Replacement Therapies for Smoking Cessation (e-cigarettes gum and patches) Are e-cigarettes better than other conventional therapies?
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States and worldwide (Centers for Disease Control, 2013, World Health Organization, 2008). Tobacco cessation counseling is a vital component of any public health strategy seeking to decrease mortality, disease and costs associated with smoking. To that end, the Healthy People 2020 Tobacco Use Objectives cover three main areas: reducing tobacco use, instituting health system changes, and creating social and environmental changes (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2013). Objective TU-10 falls under the category of health system changes as it seeks to open doors for patients to make quit attempts and to pursue tobacco cessation methods by increasing tobacco cessation counseling by physicians and other health care providers.
Smoking is a lifestyle, a habit, and a trend. Smoking has become a social activity among teens, connecting them through the craving of a smoke. Smoking is seen as seductive and cool in the media and movies which influences teenagers to smoke even more. The World Health Organization has stated that “Tobacco kills around 6 million people each year. More than 5 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while more than 600,000 are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.” As of April 2016, only 7% of teenagers in the U.S. smoke, but it is said that tobacco use will kill 8 million people annually by 2030. 99% of adult smokers start in their years as teenagers. Smoking is an epidemic that has taken control of people’s lives since 1881 and the media since the early 1900s. Smoking currently kills about 440,000 people a year in the U.S. I feel that it is an issue because it is the #1 most preventable way to die, but people still continue to smoke because of how it looks and how they are perceived as a person if they do. The fact that people become addicted to a trend that will attribute to their death for the sake of being thought of as cooler, is a problem that needs to be addressed.
Tobacco is counted as one of the most dangerous drug and is one of the leading preventable causes of deaths in U.S. Many people put their life in danger by the use of this life taking drug, tobacco. The way Nicotine (which is derived from the tobacco plant and has very powerful affects on human body) works in our brain is by mimicking the actions of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine (ACh). Acetylcholine (ACh) and its receptors perform various functions of our body, including muscle movement, breathing, heart rate, learning, and memory. Acetylochine is also involved in releasing other neurotransmitters and hormones that affect our appetite, mood etc. When nicotine is introduced to our body, nicotine molecules, which are shaped like acetylcholine, take over the actions of acetylcholine and perform all its functions. Although, many studies described the negative health issues caused by the use of tobacco, the article, “Gender and the tobacco-depression” emphases on the relationship of tobacco and depression and its possible variations by gender in African America young adults.
Experiencing the death of a loved one is never easy, especially when the cause is something self-inflicted, such as cigarettes. Imagine if that loved one was your parent or even worse, your own child. Now, imagine watching the demise and physical incapacities that transpire while you see them deteriorate right in front of you. Feel the anger that would coarse through your veins if you were to see an add that glamorized such deadly instruments, particularly once you realize that the areas being marketed are lower class. Cigarettes are legal killers that cripple many individuals and families alike. They are a highly addictive substance that benefit no one. I am against cigarettes in every capacity as I have dealt with the effects of it on a personal level. Cigarettes leave a distaste in the mouth literally and figuratively. I am also a firm believer that
Smoking cigarettes is a detrimental practice not only to the smoker, but also to everyone around the smoker. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.
Nicotine is not harmful it’s just addictive so we are trying to find alternatives for it. "I think there's a great opportunity here to understand the difference between the drug and how it's delivered, and if we can move to cleaner forms of delivery for nicotine, far, far fewer people are going to die," said David Sweanor. The safest alternative to receive nicotine is by a patch, inhaler, or gum. Though only ten percent of smokers actually quit after using these because they only put very small portions of nicotine in your body. Tobacco is an unregulated product so you have to be cautious when using it. Explorer and diplomats such as France's Jean Nicot (for whom nicotine was named) used it and popularized it. Tobacco was introduced to France in 1556, Portugal in 1558, Spain in 1559, and England in 1565 (History of Tobacco.). Tobacco was used for pipe smoking on large scale and triggered smoking since then (History of Tobacco.).
"Adult Cigarette Smoking in the United States: Current Estimates." Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 14 Feb. 2014. Web. 26 Feb. 2014.
In 2014, an estimated 40.0 million U.S. adults were current cigarette smokers. Those current smokers most likely started out before they were even 18. Killing more than 16.7% of young adults, cigarettes have caused approximately 480,000 American deaths all together each year. Many people die from smoking but many people also start smoking each year, especially people under the age of 20. Americans should address the problem of young adults smoking because it will lead to a huge increase of unnecessary issues such as, less money in your bank account, pollution, many health risks, addiction and even death.
In 2015, a study was done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC) and it was concluded that fifteen out of every one-hundred people over the age of eighteen smoker cigarettes in the United States. That means that an average of about 36.5 million people smoke cigarettes and out of that 36.5 million, 16 million people have a smoking related disease. Since 1964, more than roughly 20 million Americans have died from smoking cigarettes. This has caused major concern for many non-smoking and smoking American across the country. Non-smokers are not only healthier but also live longer lives because smoking cigarettes has such a negative effect on the human body medically.
One of the biggest problems that people are faced with on a day-to-day basis is cigarette smoke. The sole cause for 480,000 deaths each year just in the United States is accredit to cigarettes(CDC). For a lot of the smokers the habit of smoking happens to assist them when under stress and dealing with issues that are unmanageable. Some smoke to appeal to their peers or simply because it “feels good.” Smoking one cigarette can lead to a major addiction. The effects of smoking hurt oneself and those amongst us. Smoking Kills as the ad portrays this revolver and cigarettes as the bullets, and also lists the side effects of smoking. Cigarettes causes cancer, increases the risk of you getting a stroke, highly addictive and causes a lot of health problems. Nearly 16
Smoking cigarettes is a very deadly addiction that, unfortunately, 42.1 million adults in the United States and 6.4 million children have. The reason why so many people get addicted to cigarettes because of nicotine. Medicinenet.com says that nicotine is “Made by the tobacco plant or produced synthetically. Nicotine has powerful pharmacologic effects (including increased heart rate, heart stroke volume, and oxygen consumption by the heart muscle), as well as powerful psychodynamic effects (such as euphoria, increased alertness, and a sense of relaxation). Nicotine is also powerfully addictive.”

The tobacco industry is growing dramatically these days. While anti-tobacco education is provided, numerous projects are held and healthy life-style is promoted, smoking still remains popular among adolescent and adults. Even though this habit does not seem to be that big of a deal, tobacco users require medical and physiological help to quit.
