Without explicitly stating it, anti-smoking ads are based on the logical argument that smoking is bad for your health and quitting is in your best interest. Ever since it was discovered that smoking is linked to cancer and other illnesses, society’s view of smoking has changed. Now, smoking has a negative connotation. Smoking has switched from “smoking is cool and mature” to the equivalent of writing your suicide note. Although I was persuaded by your ad, I discovered that your advertisement can also evoke an unexpected reaction. My uncle, a smoking enthusiast, was not persuaded to quit smoking by your ad, instead, the first thing he did after he saw it was pick up another cigarette—definitely not the desired reaction for an anti-smoking ad. First, the dead body serving as a visual reminder of his inevitable future stressed him so much he started to crave more cigarettes. As he calmed himself with cigarettes, he developed a ‘why not’ mentality. Feeling powerless in the face of death, he decided he rather die doing something he enjoyed and gives him much pleasure. As you can see, evoking these strong emotions may not the best persuasive method for everyone.

I am analyzing a commercial put on by the Hawaii State Department of Health's statewide health promotion campaign. This commercial is titled Re-think your drink and shows why choosing water, 100% juice, and low fat/1% milk is a healthier choice in beverages. Drinking one can of soda or juice a day can make a person 10 pounds heavier a year! Rhetorical devices that I have found in this text are pathos and ethos. The purpose of this analysis is to determine whether this commercial is effective or persuasive. Its pathos affects my emotion because it compares the amount of sugar in soda to a cup of orange junk. The rhetorical devices in this text have made "re-thinking my drink" very effective. This commercial is important because people that drink soda or juice don't realize how much sugar and fat that one can contains. Projects, such as the Dove Self-Esteem Project uses native advertising in their commercials, which refers to a brand or product being simultaneously and indirectly promoted. The campaign Truth focuses on giving facts, truths and statistics to its viewers to become educated on the topic of tobacco. Underneath the large text from above, the second fact states that “90% of them started as teen smokers.” Many adults that have become addicted to smoking cigarettes began the habit as teens. There are many people that believe smokers are not good people and that they are going to be ill. That is what the artist of this picture is portraying. Truth’s most recent campaign, ‘Finish It’, has a strong theme: “be the generation that ends smoking for good.” This has been presented and shown through social media and popular television shows. Through the exposure of the deathly, and eye opening facts through social media, it has been a great impact to teenagers. On Truth’s website they state that “We’re not here to criticize your choices, or tell you not to smoke. We’re here to arm everyone—smokers and nonsmokers—the the tools to make it change” (thetruth.com). Many other anti—smoking campaigns shame and make smokers feel guilty but Truth is mainly about exposing the facts and making people more knowledgeable about tobacco.
