Caitlin Hamoui isn’t very passionate about journalism, she didn’t even sign up for this class. Caitlin was expecting to see more photography involved since, she loves to take pictures. She considers herself to be a self-starter because she motivates and leads herself to do things - she doesn’t wait for others. Working pressure isn’t problem for Caitlin but, the pressure does get her annoyed. She defines a team player as someone who works in a team. That short definition alone should tell you that Caitlin is more of an independent person a, do it on your own, kind of girl. She entered the class late and its been very hard for her to catch up but, she isn’t giving up on trying. She will never do something just to do it, her best efforts are put into everything she does. Quality over quantity is an important rule. To Caitlin, quality is perfect meaning, she will not give out multiple things if the quality isn’t right. She would rather spend more time on one thing to make it perfect than spending less time on, not so perfect content. When asked, Caitlin told me that should would rather explain a complex idea simply. Why? If can explain a complex idea in simple word, it means that you’ve mastered it. She believes that being able to teach someone knowledge you have means that you have fully stored and processed it. Caitlin, being from the new generation, reads social media. Snapchat and Instagram are her main sources of information. That doesn’t mean she never reads anything else. She will read a book if it interests her enough. Her favorite book is by her favorite author, The Twilight series by Stephenie Myers. Caitlin doesn’t spend her free time reading though, she would rather spend time with her friends or playing
soccer. Caitlin does not have a job but, is eager to get her first job when she can. While she waits, she plans on joining some clubs in high school next year since, she hasn’t taken any in middle school. She did, however, compete in gymnastics competitions in elementary school and won a lot of medals. It made her happy and she felt good about her achievements. She believes she is good at soccer and gymnastics and wants to learn how to play more sports. Caitlin’s fears and dreams go hand in hand, she has a fear of losing people and her dream is to be a successful surgeon. She aspires to one day be a surgeon and sees herself working, or owning, a hospital in 10 years.
In this passage, Augusten has finally made it into college and he is working in his first English class. This class is focusing only on the technical parts of the language and less on writing. Augusten would go on to be a published writer, which makes it all the more ironic that he is failing at midterm. This supports the idea that we shouldn’t try to force every person into one kind of instruction. Just because Augusten was failing English, that did not mean that he was incapable of learning, it simply meant that the class was not reaching him in the right way. I will learn to understand that not the same kind of therapy will work for every patient just like this teacher was teaching one way and he could not learn for his style of teaching. Making changes to my style of therapy will help me to gain trust and confidence from my patients and will reassure them that I and there for one thing and one thing only: to help
This is where she uses ethos to provide the reader with an understanding that she is a credible writer. First she uses the National Center for Education Statistics information to provide a strong base of knowledge regarding the topic that is already available. The article from the National Center for Education Statistics includes a quote from a teacher stating “the use of acronyms and shorthand in text messages for students’ inability to spell and ultimately to write well” (pg. 2). She goes on to explain teacher’s viewpoints and their beliefs on the topic after seeing a decrease in writing abilities. There is a quote included by Naomi Baron, a professor at American University, in which states “so much of American society has become sloppy and laissez faire about the mechanics of writing” (pg.2). This quote provides evidence that everyone should be concerned about the effects because our society is facing the issues as well not only students. As she continues to provide a foundation for others ideas regarding the topic, she changes viewpoints to those who see the positives in texting. Cullington uses an author to elaborate on the positives that increased texting can have on individuals. David Crystal explains that students “sharpen their diplomatic skills . . . [because] it allows more time to formulate their thoughts and express them carefully” (pg.4). This is something that is important in today’s day and age where people want the short and sweet version, not something drawn out that can be hard to understand. In her background information regarding the positive aspects of texting, she uses emotions to connect with the reader when she discusses children who struggle with writing. Mike Rose met many struggling students at UCLA’s Tutorial Center, the Writing Research Project, and the school’s Summer program. He first describes the loneliness students feel upon arriving at college, and that as they try to find themselves, they all to often lose themselves because they are bombarded with ideas that are so foreign to them. He introduces his audiences to Andrea, a bright young girl out of high school who, despite hours of memorizing in her textbook, could not obtain a passing grade on her Chemistry mid-term. How is this possible if she spent so much time studding? Rose explains that she failed because in college, and in this course in particular, it is not enough for a student to know the material, but rather, to be able to apply it in a various amount of problems. Yet the problem Andrea faces is that she was never taught this in high school.

In the United States during the 1800's, the Civil War had broken out and the need for disaster relief emerged. Their had not been a specific organization or person to adminster aid to the wounded until Clara Barton came about. She had a unique ability to identify people who were underserved and easily forgotten.Clara took a courageous stand by nursing and caring for wounded soldiers. In addition to her battlefield work, she went on to search for the missing and dead soldiers of the Civil War and establish the American Associaton of the Red Cross. Clara Barton took a stand when others were falling and need help.
In elementary school, I didn’t realize until second grade that I was “advanced” or progressing through topics quicker than my peers. It was during this time that I would receive more challenging work than others. One of my fellow “advanced learners” was Taylor Mihalik. I have always maintained a captivation with the “how and why”, how things work, and why they work in that way. This mindset, however provokes most to believe that my enthusiasm comes only through courses, which have a more scientific or analytical backbone, generally involving theories and data. When I was younger, I also thought this; I saw courses such as literature as uninteresting, and even a waste of my time. But, as I have grown my premature perspectives have developed, expanding my own interest in topics previously foreign to me. Broadening my attitude I have been able to find appreciation in the stories I read for their introspective themes and characters. Due to a student’s faulty scaffolding, reading does not work cohesive to make the end product a successfully understood story. This concerns me. If I feel like they are falling behind on these skills and their other teachers, my colleagues, are not teaching them these skills, I will and do my best at making it appropriate for my class. Without reading skills, they will be faced with horrible ramifications from their problems to comprehend and understand the vocabulary words they see in their textbooks.
There are many areas for potential failure in the learner-centered classroom. Doyle states that student resistance is the biggest obstacle to overcome. The student often doesn’t understand the concept and is not receptive to it. The greatest way to deal with this potential failure is to explain the ‘why’ to the students. Students that understand why they are to do a task and understand how to apply it are more likely to overcome it.

There are many ways that a teacher can assist their students, one example is Scaffolding. Scaffolding is where a teacher provides students with just enough help in order to complete the tasks themselves, then over time decreasing the amount of help so that a student can master this themselves.
