Introduction and case background Keda Industrial Company Ltd. (Keda) is a world leader in building materials machinery. Established in 1992 as a small ceramics machinery manufacturer, rapid growth in the past decade has granted Keda recognition as one of China’s top 500 national machinery manufacturers as well as one of the world’s top 10 building materials machinery enterprises. Recognizing their current systems were no longer sufficient, Keda recently underwent a remarkable, successful SAP enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation. Business Problem Although successful, it’s important to recognize what went well and what could have been done better so you will improve your business by learning from past experiences. Looking back on the past implementation, I have identified some strengths, weaknesses, improvement opportunities, potential threats, and finally areas where luck may have dictated your projects result. Important Factors & Analysis It’s my understanding that you wanted to implement a solution that is efficient, integrated, standardized, accurate, fiscally responsible and faster than your current system. The most glaring of these improvement-opportunities is the siloed structure within Keda. This structure is the source of several negative consequences; such as, redundant work assignments, poor communication between business units, tension between module owners, disconnected units, higher incurred costs and finally, a lower chance for product innovation as team members fail to effectively brainstorm with different types of people.
