With the bullying environment existing in an organisation will leading to financial impact to the company. Apart from affecting workers but will indirectly affect the company. There are 5 factors that are the products of workplace bullying. Firstly, there will be a reduction of production. Workers don't normally perform well in stress-filled conditions. Instead of focusing on work production, workers will be distracted due to workplace bullying. Furthermore, there will be a lack of motivation within the organization which defies from taking the extra mile to finish their task on hand. Secondly, there will be a time lost when people are involved in bullying. Victims will try to get sick leave to prevent getting bullied. Some will call in sick when actual fact they are not. Research out of the United Kingdom suggests that workplace bullying has been a factor in the loss of 18.9 million working days each year. That kind of absenteeism translates into a big loss of time in the workplace. Royal & Sun Alliance, the largest commercial insurance company in the United Kingdom, has suggested that this has cost businesses approximately 18 billion British pounds annually, which equates to approximately eight to 10% of a company's profits. Thirdly, Employee will have a constant turnover. Workplace bullying has been linked to high rate turn over for the company. It suggests that about 30 percent of employees who experience bullying and 20 percent of that witness will leave the organization. Therefore, there will be an economic impact on the employer. Every time an employee leaves the company, need to factor additional cost for hiring and training the new employee and equipped with necessary skill sets. Bullying has many negative effects on many people such as the victim, the bully himself, and society. Studies show these effects may turn out to be short-term or long-term.
One major issue businesses around the world face in today’s society is workplace bullies. In almost every workplace there is a bully. In today’s world there are so many different life styles, and there is usually that one person that believes it is their job to push others around. What is workplace bullying? What makes these people become a bully? Who are the bullies and the victims? How do we prevent bullying? Those are some questions I will answer in this paper.
Dealing with the bullies would consist of you: Keep calm under verbal attack, respond quietly and coherently, do not hide the fact, ask colleagues, joint action, written record, confront the bully, ask them to stop, seek advice or initiate procedure (Olive, K., & Cangemi, J. 2015). Promote a positive work culture. Dignity at work, everyone entitles to it and we are obliged to uphold it (Olive, K., & Cangemi, J. 2015). Bullying is unacceptable- clear real revisited policy and robust procedures- timeless crucial. Name it challenge it report it- bullying thrives on silence (Olive, K., & Cangemi, J.
Bullying in school arises as a global issue, and people are becoming more aware of its essence and its consequences. Going to school should be like a second home, a safe, compliant place, but for some student, school can be a social nightmare. Some may view bullying as a harmless act, but it is in fact a dangerous act. Students that have been bullied tend to be emotionally unstable, depressed, loss of interest in school and they have a higher risk of becoming drug addicts and school dropout. Bullying does not only affect the person being bullied, but also the bully himself. Persons who are bullies are usually the ones with the most problems and they use bullying as a mask to hide all their problems. Students who bully are more prone to abuse alcohol and drugs, they usually engage in risky sexual activities and are more likely to grow up as criminal
The theory background is based on a research conducted by Djurkovic, McCormack, & Casimir (2005), which related workplace bullying and victims' reactions, divided in three possible categories: assertiveness, avoidance, and seeking formal help. According to the results of this research, the avoidance reaction was the most common revealed (p. 451). Also Ayoko, Callan & Härtel (2003) related bullying and conflict events in the workplace as well as interpersonal relationship problems, their intensity, frequency and duration in the organizational environment. The outcomes of this research were also analyzed by showing that bullying can promote counterproductive behaviors as consequence of “frustration, aggression and humiliation” (p. 285). Another study that supports that idea was written by Vega & Comer (2005) which suggests that “most frequently victims of bullying are unassertive, conflict avoidant, and make little effort to be part of the group” (p. 106).
A review of the text reveals that there are many definitions of workplace bullying. According to Weidmer (2010), “workplace bullying is “ the repeated, health-harming mistreatment of one or more person’s (the targets) by one or more perpetrators that takes one or more of the following forms: verbal abuse, offensive conduct/ behaviors (including non-verbal) which are threatening, humiliating, or intimidating; and work interference/ sabotage which prevents work from getting done” (p.35).” This definition is helpful as it captures the essential relating to the efforts of the bully.
When parents and teacher understand the potential cause of why bullies decide to bully. They can make the decision to show their children that bullying isn 't right and could help to prevent bullying in the future. Studies show that “Over 77 percent of students have been bullied” ( No bullying.com).Before explaining why people bully, defining what a bully is, would be a helpful tool to know what bullying is. Bullying could be considered as purposefully taking control over someone through verbal abuse and physical abuse. Most verbal abuse starts with teasing or threats. Another type of abuse could be with such violence “Use superior strength or influence to intimidate (someone), typically to force him or her to do what one wants” (The free dictionary).
Bullying is a growing concern in a society where status and exercising power over another human being are increasingly important in developing one’s social circles. Dan Olweus (Norwegian researcher and founder of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program) defines it as an “aggressive behaviour that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power. Most often, it is repeated over time” (Violencepreventionworks.org). School victimization is an especially delicate matter that has only really been in the public eye for the past half century, as more and more researchers and psychologists pointed out its short- and long-term negative effects on targeted individuals. It has since been widely investigated and numerous programs have been developed in an effort to address and prevent the many forms of bullying that exist today. The negative effects of such an abusive behaviour are various and can greatly differ from individual to individual. However, there are three main consequences that can be associated with school bullying, which are: school avoidance, depression/anxiety and even suicidal attempts.
Bullying has been a part of schooling for as long as children have been congregating. To some it seems like a natural, though uncomfortable, part of life and school experience, while to others it can mean terrifying experiences which spoiled and characterized otherwise happy years in school. Dan Olweus, a pioneer in bully behavior research documented that 2.7 million children are affected as victims, and that 2.1 children act as bullies (Fried, 1997, as cited in Aluedse, 2006). With bullying cited as the reason for violent, gun-related crime in the past few years, school districts as well as national governments have put anti-bullying policies in place. Bullying is a complicated phenomenon, involving more than one child demanding lunch money from a smaller child. It is a worldwide epidemic hitting schools everywhere. Virtually everyone has seen or experienced bullying. With technological advances, bullying is even hitting the internet. Parents, teachers, students and governments agencies alike are attempting to put a stop to bullying practices.
In terms of my friend, he agreed that numeracy is an application of mathematics in our daily lives, which is supported by that mathematics is often defined as body of language, its more about general principles that can be applied in a range of context (Hughes & Hallett, 2001. as cited in Hogan, 2012). However, he explains that mathematical knowledge is ever expanding and is much broader than the abilities of numeracy. It can be inferred that mathematics and numeracy are interdependent (Hogan, 2012). To be numerate is to use mathematics effectively to meet the general demands of life at home, in paid work, and for participation in community and civic life (AAMT (1997):p. 2). Numeracy is a critical awareness which builds bridges between mathematics
Bullying is a serious issue especially, if it happens at work. It affects productivity, emotional health and can cause death if not taken seriously. Have you ever witnessed someone being mean and deliberately abusing someone at work? Bullying occurs without warning and can cause serious repercussions. With the right policies bullying can be prevented, workplace bullying can be devastating because financial issues can occur, bullying can lead to severe consequences, and can cause serious health issues.
In spite of the specific behavior, bullying can bring a very bad effect on workplace. It can lower employee’s morale and reduce the productivity because of absenteeism. (2014, Mar 15) Form the study by Korkmaz and Cemaloglu (2010), they indicates that absenteeism can be traced to bullying. Form the other study, the study of working bullying and sickness absence in hospital staff by Kivimaki, Elovainio & Vahtera (2000) which base on 647male and 4981 female hospital emoloyees, it also show that victims of bullying have 1.2 times higher sickness absence that the rest of the stuff, which mean workplace bulling relates to the increase in absenteeism. From the study by Devonish (2014), he collected the self-reported absence data from survey...
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” These words have been repeated countless times, but they are not accurate. In truth, words can kill. Bullying has become a highlighted problem within our society, and bullying in the school systems is even more prominent. According to the news, there are countless cases of bullying, many of which do not have happy endings. The rates of suicide due to bullying are currently higher than they have ever been before. Suicide is the third top causes of death in young people within the United States, averaging at 4,400 deaths a year, with over 50% of these deaths as a result of some sort of bullying. Studies also show that there are 100 suicide attempts for every one successful suicide performed (“Bullying and Suicide”). These numbers are disturbingly high. Bullying is affecting more kids in ways that some adults may never understand. The fact that words and actions can lead to cutting and suicides is still a distant concept to some and needs to be brought to immediate attention. Laws are now being put into place to prevent these tragedies, but what is really being done to prevent them within the schools or even within the students’ homes? There is a lot of finger pointing when it comes to this topic. But we all want to know what the cause is behind this nationwide crisis and who is responsible for it.
