As I explored this particular term “Bronies” I was intrigued, this term is something I’ve never heard of, or was aware was actually real. The term, “ ‘Brony’ is an internet slang term used to describe a teenager or adult male fan of the TV cartoon series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic” (Triple Zed). Bronies get together and have their own events, trends, and have their own unique interests, the Brony fandom comes together and supports each other, they are a unity. As I continued my research on Bronies I found out in depth why they are so interested in this cartoon and fandom, ultimately this is their escape to happiness. Bronies have created their own world, this fandom is not only interested but also invested into it, seeing as they have different kinds of events to show their loyalty to their beloved show, one of them being Bronycon; “BronyCon is the world’s largest convention for and by fans of the animated TV series “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.” Starting out as a one-day event in New York City with just 100 attendees, BronyCon has grown over the years to a weekend-long extravaganza drawing over 9,000 fans from every corner of the globe” (Lunar Corp.). They also have events coming up next year in 2017, in New York. Their events are no joke and are taken very serious, in the event, they have the …show more content…
special guest, for example, the people who are the voices of the ponies, they even have sponsors to help chip in with the events for their fellow Bronies. Not only do they set up events for the loyal Bronies, they also have meet ups to allow other bronies to get to know each other and to make friends and share the interest with one another. This fandom has grown in over the course of the years, it all began in 2012 and it still going strong into 2017, with a lot more fans to follow ‘My Little Ponies’ journey. The term began when a fellow fan who was a transgendered woman, of My Little Pony, posted on 4chan’s, board she shared her thoughts on an episode and people started commenting back, saying that the show was actually good, people became fans, but some people began to cause controversy on the site which made this particular topic off limits and this made more people talk about this show a lot more. Thus far the most used website for this particular fandom is Equestriadaily, which is where fans can tune in to see News, Art, Flics, Comics, Media, and be able to talk and share their thoughts with other fellow fans. Overall most of the things this fandom likes to do are no different than any other fandom, this fandom loves to dress up when they have conventions just like people when they go to comic con.
One of the biggest reasons Bronies loves My Little Pony is simply because they love feeling like they are a part of something bigger, just like any other fan base does, they also love all of the support other fans give them, they are like a family. After doing a lot of research on Bronies, I have come to the conclusion that they are like any other fan base just a little more extreme than others, which nothing is wrong with that if it makes them
happy. After surfing the most used Brony website I came across a dictionary and choose a few words that were different and interesting. The first word that intrigued me was Canterlot, which is the capital city of Equestria; this is where the ponies are from. The next word I came across was coltcuddler, which is a male homosexual equine. The next word that I came across, I found very cute, Eyup which means yes. Last but definitely not least, Neighslayer, which means someone who belittles My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. I choose these few words because these are unique terms and are words we would never use in the real world, which is very neat. I would have to say the best part for a Brony is that they get to leave this world and go into a fantasy world. Before I finished my research on Bronies I was very confused and a little frightened at the idea of older men liking a show my three-year-old sister loves, but the matter of the fact is that it’s their escape and it makes them happy, which is the only thing that matters. My whole perspective on Bronies definitely changed as I completed my final.
It is a common misconception to say that Roderigo is an inferior character in Othell, and that he plays no major role due to his simple superobjective which he does not achieve—which is to be with Desdemona by whatever means necessary. However, Shakespeare’s purpose for Roderigo, which makes him important to the play, is quite different from what Roderigo desires. Roderigo’s superobjective is introduced in the first act as we see Roderigo and Iago confront Brabantio about the whereabouts of Desdemona. In the first act we also see how badly Roderigo longs to be with Desdemona when he says that “I will incontinently drown myself” (I.iii.305). We begin to see the power Iago has over Roderigo and because of this Roderigo begins to appear weak and indecisive. This weakness derives from how desperate Roderigo is to be with Desdemona.
Often times in our life, we may come across a lifestyle of a character from a fictional book, movie or tv show, that is different than our owns. It could be a life that we would dream to have or a life that we could not possibly imagine having. Focusing on the childhood aspects of a lifestyle, my young self would often compare my childhood to the protagonist in one my favorite cartoons (“Fairly Odd Parents”) Timmy Turner. Timmy’s childhood was a lifestyle that enthralled me from how similar yet different it was from my own.
Grand champion! I was riding Fancy, a paint horse, at the Dallas County Fair in the Horsemanship class. In this class, I had to complete a pattern and it was judged on how well each horse and rider completed the pattern. The judge felt that Fancy and I performed best and awarded me with a big purple ribbon and a trophy with a horse on top. At the end of the fair, all of the grand champions were announced before the races. That was the final reward for successfully showing a horse in competitions.
In an article called “Relationships, community, and Identity in the New Virtual Society” Arnold Brown explains two different identities, one that he calls “found identity” and the other “made identity” (34). The found identity is one that is created by one true self, it’s based off your background, your religion, your sexuality, everything that truly defines who you really are. And then there’s your made identity, the one you make for yourself and how you wish to be seen. As technology advances, the easier it will be for young girls to create these made identity’s of these famous celebrities, having them focus on things that don’t matter instead of valuing who they really are. As an older sister, I can say that I’ve seen change in my own sister.
Tweens are the cohort group that are the ages between 8 years of age and 12 years of age. (Marketing to Tweens) This group are almost to the teenager stage, but not quite there. They also cannot be considered kids, either. Thus, tween became the word that people use to describe this group. The group that is be-tween the group of kids and teenagers, or are also considered preteens.
Since the humble origins of the video gaming industry, individuals used it as a challenge of their abilities. In modern day, this industry is just a popular as any other media which exists in the mainstream world. Video games reflect society’s changing views of the normalities of which individuals and/or groups must abide to. This is exemplified in the evolving representation of the queer individuals within the virtual world. As the video game industry came into focus, so did the LGBT rights movement. This illustrates that society’s views on the LGBT community were reflected in the video games made, however, it was rare that such characters existed as protagonists until the twenty first century. Due to the extreme lack of asexual and non-binary
In the world we live in reality in an individual’s eyes will always be based on things and people that surround that person. In Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Theory of human development there are four main concepts supporting his theory which are Microsystem, Mesosystem, Exosystem, and Macrosystem. The basic idea behind this theory is that the environment will always influence the reality of an individual. On the other hand there are those who stand by the idea that a person’s biological influences are the key factors which will influence the way an individual accelerates in life. In Piaget’s theory of cognitive development he stands by the idea that we as humans have different stages in which we achieve a higher cognitive ability based on our biological capabilities. Although both of these theories have significant reason behind them I feel that from a teachers point of view a child’s social interactions with the outside world have the biggest effect when it comes to development and their motivation and will to succeed in life.
I don’t consider myself a part of a subculture, but I have interacted with people that belong to different subcultures. One subculture I grew to understand was the bronies I bet your wondering “Bronies” what’s that? Bronies is a subculture mainly of men that have an interest in ponies. If you take a minute and think back to your childhood you might remember the television show “My Little Ponies” this is where the term Bronies come from. Just like any other group Bronies have different convection across the world that men and women participate in, from dressing up to speaking their own language, No I never been to a conviction but, I have seen a documentary of the subculture. I have a friend that’s a part of Bronies though he too never been
Some time before I began middle school, I read a book called Chicken Soup for the Pre-Teen Soul. At the end of the book, there was a list of resources, including a website called preteenplanet.com. Although the book was somewhat dated by the time I read it, I decided to check the website out anyway. Preteen Planet shut down almost a decade ago, but at the time, it was a safe haven for tweens to play games, explore online advice message boards, participate in online contests, and browse e-cards. It was something that I really appreciated because at the time, the area I lived in didn’t offer many social opportunities for kids my age. It was the first time I felt like I was part of an online community.
Family Guy, an ongoing show, which has won three primetime Emmys (IMDB), has had trouble resulting in the cancellation of the show twice, due to its “gags per minute about race, sex, incest, bestiality, etc.” (Peacocke 300), Stephen Dubner, co-author of Freakonomics, described Family Guy. This show “purposely offends just about every group of people you could name” (Peacocke 300), New York Times journalist, Stuart Elliot claimed. However, this satire show is rated for ages 14 and over even, though it is of an adult animation category. Family Guy produces comedy from the faults and imperfection of the U.S. society in a derisive and sometimes bigoted way. But some jokes, Antonia Peacocke, a student at Harvard University, said to be, “more tame and insightful, the kind you might expect from the New Yorker” (306). In other words, Peacocke believes Family Guy shows an accurate and deep understanding of the U.S. society, in the form of jokes. It is a show that could bring people to “easily come to think that the cartoon takes pleasure in controversial humor just for its own sake. But those who pay more attention and think about the creators’ intentions can see that Family Guy intellig...
We can define cool hunting as the chase to make quick money as a result of feeding off the trend setting nature of teenagers by manipulating and mass producing products and items into a popular culture before it becomes old news. The implications that we can deduct from this video in terms of cool hunting for creation of new ideas, new music, new art forms, and more, is that something can only be considered “cool” until it is found/discovered. Following the discovery of the product, word begins to spread, thus leading to the commercialization of said product. So much so that it results in a “hot trend” that everyone begins to use, thus inferring that it is no longer “cool” considering everyone is now after the same trend. Which ends up turning
In the television series Family Guy, there are many episodes that contain different types of humor including: slapstick humor, pop-culture humor, and offensive humor. Because of the use of so many types of humor, Family Guy appeals to a very unique and somewhat split demographic. The demographic is unique because the pop-culture references embedded in Family Guy’s format are primarily drawn from the 1970s and 80s, so only previous generations are guaranteed to get all the references; yet, the humor tactics involved appeal to younger people and can even be called “immature.” According to the show’s creator, Family Guy’s target audience is men between the ages of 18 and 34 years old.
Although Disney is commonly associated with childhood innocence, giving young children the possibility to dream and fantasise, it is important to question the ideology and values that Disney promote. Although largely positive values arise from Disney Animation, there has also been a backlash of criticism against Disney. This negativity could stem from some of the inaccurate gender interpretations, conservative values and ideologies the films promote. ‘Such characters warrant critical attention because they are not just representations of individual people but are encodings of ideology and embodiments of ideological values’ (Fiske, 1987, cited in Lacroix, 2004, p.217). Therefore the aim of this dissertation will be to investigate the potentially prejudicial representations of gender in Disney’s feature animated films, focussing on the representations of the leading female protagonists.
Imagine yourself as a very helpful person. Imagine yourself getting shunned from humanity only because you watch a certain T.V. show. How would you feel? Angry? Depressed? Hated? All of these things are how Bronies feel when they’re shunned from the world. Bronies are one of the most charitable fandoms in the world, and should be recognized for their contributions to the world, not for what they watch.
I continue to be taken aback by the behavior of some of the Brophy students when they leave the campus.
