Every business needs technology for e-mail, internet, phones and social networking. As technology rapidly changes, businesses must decide how to implement and regulate these technologies. Companies must decide whether they provide devices or require employees to provide their own. Bring your own device is the use of devices and applications that are purchased and used by employees, rather than being provided by their company. Bring your own device increases efficiency, employee satisfaction, can be overall less restrictive and save a lot of money for the company. Increased efficiency of work means we can do more in the same amount of time. When you have thousands or hundreds of thousands of employees this translates to many hours of increased productivity which will benefit the company. When employees get to decide on the devices, they are far more comfortable with them and less time is being spent trying to learn new technology. Employees that provide their own devices have far more control of the content that can be used on it and can bounce between work and personal use. Less time is being spent having to manage multiple smart phones, personal computers and other devices. A business does not want to provide expensive data plans only for their employee to stream extensive amounts of data throughout the day. Devices and data plans can amount to costing about $350 - $1300 annually per device. Businesses require thorough policies and guidelines that need to be followed when allowing BYOD.
