Have you ever had someone that you look up to? There is somebody that lots of students at West Delaware look up to that teaches a lot of things. This hero has taught everybody in general many things involving, school, sports, and to be a good person in general. Brett Mather, my hero, is a coach and a teacher at West Delaware High School. Coaches strive to make students and athletes better people on, and off the court. Mather does an amazing job with that.
Every coach is different with their methods, but they do have similar things they love about coaching. According to Brainy Quote, Vince Lombardi once said, “It’s not whether you get knocked down; it’s whether you get up.” That quote shows what Mather loves to see when coaching volleyball. A coach's goal is for the players to have fun, and grow stronger as a person and an athlete. Another passion of Brett Mathers volleyball coaching experience is watching the game. He enjoys watching, playing, and coaching the game. Mather has had a lot of influences that stewed him on his direction on where to go in life. When Brett Mather was in school, he played volleyball. He has been influenced to coach volleyball from him loving and playing the sport himself. Brett Mather was a volleyball player in college and really enjoyed the game. Later on, he started coaching club volleyball teams in the area. He continued being involved in coaching with other people and more teams. When he started coaching the West Delaware Hawks girls volleyball team, later on, he started helping coach the Hammerin’ Hawks club volleyball teams. He took time out of his schedule to volunteer with more volleyball teams practices and tournaments. As he got out of schooling, he moved on and started his journey as a teacher. According to Coaching & Teaching Our Athletes, being a good sport, and being nice to everyone is what teachers and coaches are guiding us to, (Ken Brubaker). Teaching is a very important field in our world today.
Being a teacher shows heroism to lots of people. Lots of things started with teaching, in other words, we need teachers to help us make a living of our own. According to Coach and Athletic Director, it says “Am I preparing my athletes for the game of life,” (John Amtmann). That article goes for teachers as well. They have to get us ready for our future. If they didn’t do that job, then what are teachers for? The topmost influence that lead him to be a teacher is his older sister. Mathers older sister is a teacher and that was his reason to become a teacher. Teaching and coaching just tied together. Brett wanted to be a teacher, and he was already coaching volleyball. He ended up getting a good gig at West Delaware High School as a Math teacher, and a volleyball coach. There are not many reasons why Mather became a teacher; however, he enjoys his job working with students and workers. job. Some coaches live and coach by a motto. Coaching mottos are usually inspiring, working, and motivational. Brett Mathers coaching motto is “I expect nothing but your best.” All he expects is for his athletes to try hard and put work into the sport. According to Coach and Athletic Director, making the game enjoyable, upbeat, and supportive, (Rober J, Vaughn). Brett wants his athletes to put team goals and individual goals in front of them. There will be hard times as an athlete, but all you need to do is show that you can be positive towards the game. In conclusion, Brett Mather shows heroism in lots of the things he does. Mather does many things to help students and athletes such as, being a teacher, coaching the Hawk volleyball team, volunteer coaching for the Hammerin’ Hawks, and he also coaches golf at West Delaware. There are many different words to describe heroism. Helpful, thoughtful, and caring are a few of the words I would use to describe Mathers heroism qualities. Those qualities are put into every part of his life with teaching and coaching. Overall, I picked Mather for my hero paper because of the heroic actions he makes in our school to make students and athletes better in life and as people in general.
Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
However, this is not really a direct correlation to the coach’s effectiveness in a particular sport, being that there are many other factors in coaching a team other than game records. The coach’s job is to enhance the athlete physically, socially, and psychologically, winning is only considered a by-product of that job (Gillham, Burton, & Gillham, 2013). Gillham, Burton, and Gillham (2013) focused on developing a Coaching Success Questionnaire-2 to allow a means of evaluating other aspects of a coach’s interaction with their athletes as both a research and coach development tool. A sample group of athletes at the varsity and club level ranging from ages 18 to 25 was used to develop the questionnaire by asking their perceptions of their coaches.

Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching.
Teaching allows a person to obtain so many roles, including a counselor, housekeeper, mommy, daddy, role model, parole officer, nurse, nanny, babysitter, athlete, artist, secretary, referee, computer analyst, psychologist, and a leader. Teachers change lives forever with their influence.
In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years. Coaching requires not only many technical and personal skills but also has to include positive psychology that will affect all athletes regardless of gender, age, and race. Everything that I have learned from this course I plan to put towards my coaching career. Volleyball is not as easy of a sport ass most people believe it to be. It requires coordination, speed, accuracy, learning, strength, and other abilities along with the knowledge of the game and rules. Each person has a variety of motor abilities or an ability that is specifically related to the performance of a motor skill. With each motor skill a specific motor ability is required to successfully perform it. If two of my athletes have the same about of practice, level of instruction and motivation to do the skill then motor abilities will influence the level of performance success each person can achieve. Each person learns differently, some are visual, physical or mental for myself personally I am mainly a visual learner. Learning is defined as a change in the capability to perform a skill that must be inferred from a relatively permanent improvement in performance as a result of practice or experience. If I want to be successful as a coach I have to learn how to teach every type of athlete or learner. Some players may need to see me act out a motion or play, others need it written down, or need you to tell it to them while others need all of the above in order to understand and learn it completely. Legendary coach John Wooden once said “A coach must never forget that he is a leader and not merely a person with authority”. This, I believe is a very important part of coaching, because as a coach you are looked not only as an authority figure but as a role model. I would not be the athlete or person that I am today, if it were not for the role models and coaches that pushed me to be the best that I could be. They were people that I was able to look up to athletically as well as people I knew I could trust. Having a good coaching philosophy is also a large part of being a respectable coach. A coaching philosophy is a set of values and beliefs that a coach develops to help covey his coaching style.
When I look back to my young developing stages in life, I always ask myself where would I be today if it wasn’t for my teachers? Teachers are the ones who build our future generations. Preparing children and teens for higher education. Also playing a huge part in shaping children’s lives, enlightening them, and educating them about society and the world around them; the types of things that a parent doesn’t have time for, or just lacks the knowledge of. I think teachers are what help make this world go round.
As an education major at State College, I’ve decided to become a teacher for several reasons. As I progressed through elementary, middle, and high school, many of my teachers were great role models for me. This has inspired me to become a role model for someone in the near future. My love for science and math has also influenced my desire to teach and make a difference in a child’s life. I want to teach students the subjects that I love so much. I want the feeling that I helped a child accomplish or learn something they couldn’t understand. One of the main reasons I want to become an educator is because I feel education has really lost teachers who truly love teaching and those who truly love teaching and those who have the desire to make a difference. I feel I can really help make a difference in the education world and bring back the love to teach.
First of all, being a coach is not easy. One must have a balance of being motivated and remaining confident in their efforts. The coach is also responsible for teaching the players the rules of the games. The coach has to carefully monitor each individual student athlete progress to ensure academic eligibility. Granted that some aports players can be good role models for their fans and making an adloesence believe in themselves that they can do something great in their life that they never thought possible. But a teacher can show a student that they can also do things they never thought possible. A teacher has the ability to change lives of many students. They should be given more gratitude for doing what they do and for dealing with the stereotypes and disapproval of the students lives they’re trying to change.
